Warm Up

1. The sum of the values in a data set divided by the number

of data values gives the ________________________.

2. Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set:

5, 3, 7, 6, 2, 4, 5, 8

3. Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set:

12, 15, 20, 16, 14, 13

Lesson 62, Displaying Data in Stem and Leaf Plots and Histograms Statistics and Probability

Stem and Leaf Plots

Stem and leaf plot: a data display, uses some digits as “stems” and others as “leaves” The stems have a greater place value than the leaves.

The last digit is always the leaf. Other digits are the stem.

Stem and leaf plots help us organize and display data to show the distribution

Relative frequency: the number of times an event happens divided by the total number of trials in an experiment

Histograms

Histogram: a bar graph that displays the frequency of data in equal intervals Histograms show the distribution of data

Each bar must be the same width

Each bar should touch the bar next to it

Example

The amount of money raised for a charity event by the homerooms at Jefferson High School are shown below. Create a stem and leaf plot of the data.

$150, $125, $134, $129, $106, $157, $108, $135, $144, $149

Example

Use the stem and leaf plot to find the median, mode, range, and relative frequency of 41.

The list shows the low temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit in New Orleans for the first 15 days of April 2007. Create a stem and leaf plot of the data and use it to create a histogram of the data.
