5 things to know about

Sandy

1. Sandy is a Northbound Hurricane

Sandy will become an “extratropical storm”.Tropical storms get their power from warm ocean waters. Extratropical storms get their power from temperature contrasts in the atmosphere.

2. Sandy is meeting a Winter Storm system from the West

Sandy will merge with a wintry system from the west. It will become a powerful superstor. Winds from that system will pull Sandy back toward the U.S. mainland.

3. Sandy will meet frigid Artic air from Canada.

Freezing air will collide with Sandy and the wintry storm, creating a megastorm that is expected to park over the northeast for days.

4. High tides could worsen flooding

A full moon means high tides will be higher than usual. That will make it easier for the storm’s powerful winds to push water into low lying areas. Combined with the hurricane rains, there is possibility of flooding.

5. Snow-wind combinations increases power outages.

The superstorm brings 2 possibilities for knocking out electricity. One, hurricane force winds of 74 mph could send tree branches into power lines, or topple power poles. The trees left standing could be weighed down by snow, and also fall down on power lines.
