THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATIONSamuel John Stone | Samuel Sebastian Wesley© Words: Public Domain Music: Public Domain CCLI Licence # 225140

The Church's one foundationIs Jesus Christ her LordShe is His new creationBy water and the WordFrom heaven He came and sought herTo be His holy brideWith His own blood He bought herAnd for her life He died

Elect from every nationYet one o'er all the earthHer charter of salvationOne Lord one faith one birthOne holy name she blessesPartakes one holy foodAnd to one hope she pressesWith every grace endued

Though with a scornful wonderThe world sees her oppressedBy schisms rent asunderBy heresies distressedYet saints their watch are keepingTheir cry goes up ‘how long’?But soon the night of weepingShall be the morn of song

Through toil and tribulationAnd tumult of her warShe waits the consummationOf peace for evermoreTill with the vision gloriousHer longing eyes are blessedAnd the great Church victoriousShall be the Church at rest

Yet she on earth hath unionWith God the Three in OneAnd mystic sweet communionWith those whose rest is wonO happy ones and holyLord give to us the grace Like them the meek and lowlyIn Heaven to seek your face.

CONFESSION

P: Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of each other. The Bible tells us that all people have sinned and fall short of God’s standard. Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, when we test your love and patience

C: Bless us with your forgiveness in Jesus Christ our Lord.

P: When we do not give time to you

C: Father, bless us with your forgiveness in Jesus Christ our Lord.

P: When we are led astray by our own wants and desires

C: Father, bless us with your forgiveness in Jesus Christ our Lord.

P: When we do not see what Jesus has done for us

C: Father, bless us with your forgiveness in Jesus Christ our Lord.

P: When we go our own way thinking it is a better choice than following your will

C: Father, bless us with your forgiveness in Jesus Christ our Lord.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESSP: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new

creation: everything old has passedaway; see, everything has become new!

All this is from God to whom we have been reconciled by Christ.  Rejoice

then, for we are known, accepted, loved and forgiven.

C: Thanks be to God!

PSALM 119:129-136

P. Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them.C. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.P. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.C. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name.

P. Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.C. Redeem me from the oppression of men, that I may obey your precepts.P. Make your face shine upon your servant and teach me your decrees.C. Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever-more. Amen.

P: The Lord be with you

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

Lead us, great and loving God, to desire, above everything, the gifts of your kingdom. Make us ready to renounce anything else, for the sake of your most precious gift, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

CONFESSION OF FAITHLuther’s Explanation of the 2nd Article of the Creed

C: I believe that Jesus Christ – true god, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary is my Lord.At great cost he has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person. He has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil -

C: not with silver or gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. All this he has done that I may be his own and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he has risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.
