We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST
Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761
From the Pastors Desk October 13th, 2019 This week we are begin-
ning a new message series
we are calling “Response
Ability.” As human beings
we have freedom to act
and react to life. We have
the ability to respond to the events that happen to us.
And how we choose to respond determines the course
of our life. When we look back over the course of our
lives to date, how we responded to certain situations,
certain opportunities have shaped the outcomes.
Some years ago, I attended a clergy retreat at Franciscan
University in Steubenville. On the last evening of the
retreat, Catholics from local parishes were invited to
the Field House on campus where a Healing Prayer Ser-
vice was to be held. At the beginning of the evening, Fr.
Michael Scanlon invited any of the priests who felt called
to pray over others for healing to come forward to re-
ceive a blessing. At first I resisted, but I eventually went
forward as I felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit.
At the end of the evening, I felt called to delve deeper
into the ministry of healing and deliverance. Over the
course of the past 10 years or so, the Lord has blessed
me with many opportunities to pray with families, cou-
ples, and individuals for physical, emotional, and spiritual
healing. The willingness to respond to a simple invita-
tion to pray has had a profound impact on my priestly
ministry.
Over the course of this series, we are going to look at
our ability to respond to God. We are
going to look at taking greater respon-
sibility for our walk with Christ. And
specifically work to respond to God
when it comes to prayer and when it
comes to giving...the two main ways
we honor God.
The Annual Diocesan Appeal is an opportunity for us to
be good stewards of God’s gifts as we share with other
Catholics our treasure and our blessings and show our
love for one another. The ADA gives us the opportunity
to act together as a family of faith and support the pro-
grams and services no single individual or parish can offer
themselves. Your gift is important. Every gift, regardless
of size, is vital to the success of the Appeal.

OCTOBER “Month of The ROSARY
For PEACE in our hearts, homes and country.
Please join us 30 minutes before each Mass during the month of October to recite
the Rosary.
ALSO ! Did you know that over 25% of the U.S. Military is
Catholic??
Rosary makers from our parish along with the HolyLand Mili-
tary Rosary Ministry are offering beautiful colored beaded Ro-
saries. These are available for a suggested $5 donation and are
located at the (back) main entrance to the church. 100% of
proceeds fund Rosary supplies for our Military.
Did you know? Walk through the Mass: Liturgy of the Word
Following the Collect/Opening Prayer, all are seated for the Liturgy of the
Word. Typically, the Liturgy of the Word begins with the proclamation of a reading
from the Old Testament. During the Season of Easter, however, the first reading is
taken from the Acts of the Apostles. The first reading is followed by the Responso-
rial Psalm. The psalm is a prayerful reflection on the theme present in the 1st read-
ing. Following the Responsorial Psalm, the 2nd reading is proclaimed. The 2nd read-
ing is taken from one of the Epistles/Letters of the New Testament, whether writ-
ten by St. Paul, St. John, or another saintly author. The theme of the second read-
ing is normally not connected with that of the first reading. When this happens, it is
simply the work of the Holy Spirit. Following the 2nd reading, we stand for the Gos-
pel Acclamation. Most of the time, we sing Alleluia. In Lent, however, we sing an
alternate verse because Lent is a penitential season. We sing Alleluia to prepare
our hearts to hear the words of Jesus spoken to us in the Holy Gospel. We stand
for the Gospel as an act of reverence and respect for the words spoken by our Sav-
ior, Jesus Christ.
In years past, Catholics had a reputation for not knowing or reading the Bible. The
truth is however, Catholics are exposed to more of the Bible than many other
Christians are who belong to other denominations. If a Catholic attends Mass faith-
fully over the course of three years, they will hear a good portion of the Bible.
So, how can I get more out of the Liturgy of the Word at Mass? One good way to
prepare for Sunday is by taking time, during the week, to read the Sunday Scripture
readings individually or as a family. There are a myriad of Catholic apps out there
that give you access to the Sunday readings, including our own Parish App and
Laudatus. You may also take home ‘The Word Among Us.” Copies can be found in
the back of the church and these contain both daily and Sunday Mass readings for
the month. In the Liturgy of the Word, we encounter God’s Word, a Word that
has the power to change our hearts!
