We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church,
WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST
Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761
From the Pastor’s Desk October 21, 2018
Thank You for your generous response to the request from
Bishop Zinkula to make a pledge to the Annual Diocesan
Appeal. For those who have not returned their pledge
envelope, I am asking, as your pastor, to do so next
week. We will meet our goal quickly when you
respond sooner rather than later!
“For the Son of Man did not come to be
served but to serve and to give his life as a
ransom for many." I s(ll remember hearing
these words spoken by Bishop Franklin on
the day of my Ordina(on as a transi(onal
Deacon as I was encouraged to follow the
example of Christ who gives us the greatest
example of servanthood.
This Sunday’s readings remind us of our call to imitate
Jesus who took on our human condi(on, who endured the
most humilia(ng death ever, and who is there close by our
side to strengthen us during our (mes of trial, tes(ng, and
weakness. Like James and John, we o/en ask Jesus to give
us what we think we need. Yet, Jesus assures us that our
true needs will be fulfilled by following a/er Him, by
denying ourselves, and imita(ng Christ’s example of
generosity by laying down our lives for Christ and for
others.
I have come to discover, over the years, that true
happiness is found not in seeking out our own needs, but
in serving the needs of Christ, His Church, and others
through whom we encounter the presence of Jesus. If you
are
having one of those days or weeks when it seems that
nothing is going right, when you are stressed out or sad-
dened by what’s going on in the world or in your own life,
be inten(onal about serving in one capacity or another.
Consider being part of our parish’s Prayer Shawl Ministry
which touches the lives of so many who are going through
illness or other life challenges. Prayerfully consider helping
with Loaves and Fishes when they are in need of
volunteers. Perhaps think about being an RCIA Sponsor
for someone coming into the Catholic Church this Easter.

The Prayer Ping: How Technology Changes Our Conversations With God
BY JANE KNUTH SEPTEMBER 12, 2018
Yesterday, my adult daughter, Martha, texted me
to ask for prayers for a co-worker who had just
died of cancer. The words in the gray dialogue box landed with a so/ “ping”
as I was ea(ng breakfast. I had been praying for her friend, but the end of a
young life is always a shock. I quickly texted back that I would pray that very
minute for the young woman and her children.
This is an example of modern family prayer.
I didn’t learn how to pray with the help of technology while I was growing up,
and, as far as I know, there aren’t any chapters in the Catechism of the Cath-
olic Church that teach us about praying with your phone.
What I discovered while interviewing families for my new book, “The Prayer
List … and Other True Stories of How Families Pray,” is that families pray in
an astonishing variety of ways such as saying grace at meal(mes, reci(ng
bed(me prayers, or uJering prayers in their cars, in hospital rooms, or at
gravestones.
My friend, Colleen, has a unique way of praying with her family with the help
of her phone’s alarm.
Saying highway prayers
Colleen has four kids and they each have busy schedules, so she sets an
alarm on her phone to go off three (mes each day: 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4
p.m. This prac(ce helps her remember that, no maJer how wound up the
day gets, there is always (me to pray.
O/en, Colleen is in the car with her kids when the liJle chime goes off, and
she interrupts the conversa(on to say, “Okay, (me to pray.” Because they’re
driving, they o/en invoke the prayers of St. Christopher; the patron saint of
travelers. Colleen’s family talks to St. Christopher so frequently that, when
her son Brendan chose a Confirma(on name, he picked the patron he knew
the best—Christopher.
Stumbling upon ‘perfect moment’ prayers
Once, she and her daughter, Julia, were together when it was (me to pray,
so Colleen turned to her and asked who they should pray for. “Mom,” Julia
said, “Can we pray for my friend?” It was a moment of closeness that they
might not have experienced without the prayer alarm. Some(mes a simple
ques(on can open up a meaningful conversa(on. I felt this closeness when
Martha interrupted my breakfast with her sad news. I was able to be there
for her and support her in her grief.
Praying in moments of togetherness and separation
Colleen says that o/en her phone alarm goes off when she is with her
husband Dave, so that’s a great (me for them to pray together. Not long ago,
the family was all together except for one daughter, Lauren, who was flying
to Germany. When Colleen heard the phone alarm, she looked at the (me
and knew Lauren was in the air, so they all stopped and prayed.

Who is the Parish Council Church and Family Life
Coordinator? My name is Laura Cus(s. My husband
Kevin and I have 3 kids Kate, Meghan, Riley
(Doug). We have been in Musca(ne 8
years and members of Saint Mary Mathias since moving
here. Iowa is our 4th
state and whenever we have moved,
we have found the Catholic Church to be the one constant
in our lives. I am a Realtor at Ruhl & Ruhl and worked in
the school system prior to that. I have always enjoyed
volunteering. I have taught RE & Children’s Word, served
on various commiJees, and chaired the school auc(on.
I enjoy Church and Family Life because it brings people
together to enjoy fellowship. I look forward to growing
our commiJee and events offered to parishioners.

There are so many opportuni(es to serve within our

reminds us that when we serve we receive what we truly
need. Let us pray that we will imitate the generous

serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.
