We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church,
WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST
Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761
From the Pastor’s Desk March 24, 2019 As we come to the third week of our message
series, “Atude Adjustment,” we will take a
look at how embracing humility can help us
stop comparing ourselves with others. O en
!mes, in life, we get caught up in the
comparison trap. We think, “I wish I was as
skinny as she is.” “I wish I made as much
money as he does.” “I wish our home was as magnificent as
the Jones’.” When we measure our happiness based on our
standards, we find ourselves jealous and never happy with
what we have. The solu!on to geng ourselves out of this
way of thinking is found in humility.
When we embrace the virtue of humility, we measure our
level of happiness based on God’s standards. We reach true
contentment by acknowledging the graces, gi s, and
blessings God has given us, not wishing we had those he has
given to another.
As we con!nue through the season of Lent, it might be a
good prac!ce to begin each day by thanking God for the
unique gi s, blessings, and talents He has given to us. When
we humbly acknowledge these unique God-given gi s, we
avoid comparing ourselves with others and find true
freedom in embracing the person God has created us to be.
In Christ,
Fr. Troy
Thank You!
The wiring project of the church is completed.
I wanted to personally thank all of you for

Unbound: The Third Key; Renunciation of Evil
Ever since the fall of Adam & Eve in the Garden of
Eden, sin has had a stronghold in every human
heart. St. Paul complained that he didn’t do the
good he desired to do. Rather, he did the evil instead (paraphrased).
Throughout our lives we are constantly at ba2le with our three principle
enemies; the world, the flesh, and the devil.
The good news is, once we have repented of our sins and turned our minds
and hearts toward the Lord, once we have forgiven those people who have
sinned against us, we are more readily able to deal with the influence of
evil in our lives. How does this evil come to us?
When our hearts are wounded, we become suscep!ble to certain evils. If
we were in a car accident on the highway when we were young, we might
experience fear whenever we are on the Interstate. If we were always
told, “You’re not good enough” we may experience low self-worth.
In this step, we should ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us any evils that have
had dominion in our hearts (fear, worry, low self-worth, anxiety, pride,
etc…) Then, we should renounce each evil in the name of Jesus by saying,
“In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce (insert the evil, fear, etc…).” By
renouncing evil’s influence in our lives, we can progress along the path to
true freedom as God’s beloved children.
NCYC Fundraiser Our Catholic Youth will be hos!ng a Pancake Breakfast on March 31st
to help raise funds to a2end the Na!onal Catholic Youth Conference in
November. Please help support this wonderful opportunity for them.

The Passion and Crucifixion: A Medical Perspective
by Tim Millea, M.D.
Thursday, 4-4-19, 6:30 PM
St. Paul the Apostle Church, Denning Hall
916 East Rusholme Street, Davenport
As we progress through Lent, a focus on the sacrifice of
Jesus for us is integral. Over the centuries, this reflec!on
has led to a greater interest in a scien!fic perspec!ve on
this salvific event. Once again, the union of faith and
science is clearly evident when the physiologic and medi-
cal analysis is seen through a theological and historical
lens. This presenta!on is an anatomic and physiologic
perspec!ve on the medical condi!on of Jesus from His
arrest to his death. With the use of inves!ga!ons over
the centuries since the first Good Friday, a clearer
understanding of how and why Jesus died is possible.
