• Your weight is determined by height, age and gender

• Your weight may not be ideal for someone else

• Your ideal weight is a range, not a single number

• Overall fitness is measured by nutrition, avoiding risks, and overall fitness, not just weight

Body Mass Index

• BMI – a measure of weight based on comparing body weight to height

Weight and Good Health

• Being underweight or overweight can both cause health risks

• If too thin- sleeping problems, irritability

fatigue, dry skin

OVERWEIGHT

• Obesity – weighing 20% more than your ideal weight, based on reliable height weight chart

Consequences of Being Over Weight

• Muscle and Joint Problems

• Heart works harder

• Higher rates of certain cancers

• Lower life expectancy

NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

• Staying at your ideal weight involves both good nutrition and adequate exercise

• The food you eat and the amount of exercise affects your weight

Figuring Out Calories

• Calories in food are converted to energy that your body can use

• Energy used to keep body warm and repair tissues

• Every 3,500 extra calories taken in causes you to gain 1 lb.
