Last year Manitobans recycled close to 73k tonnes of paper, aluminum, metal, glass and plastic. That’s equal to about 14k garbage

trucks full of recyclable material! Recycling conserves natural resources - such as timber, water and

minerals - because less raw material is required to produce products. And manufacturing with recycled materials usually produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials.

More than half of all garbage produced by a household can be recycled. Are you recycling all you can?

Last week was an exciting one for Lundar’s Volunteer Fire Dept.  The old Emergency Rescue Vehicle, which was a retrofitted ambulance, has been replaced. The truck which is new to the fire dept, is a used vehicle , and the volunteers are very happy with the purchase.  The  Ford F 350 4‐wheel drive diesel with winch will travel with the team to emergencies, and will house a lot of extrication tools which will include the jaws‐of‐life as well as some generators. Lundar’s Volunteer Firefighters include:   Fire Chiefs  Kevin Halldorson     Lorne Erickson     Dwight McGillan Active Volunteers since 2011     Donny Grandberg  Garnet Sigurdson     Oluf Christensen   Glen Gudmundson     Mitch LeStrat    Mathew Christensen     David Stevensen   Bradley Howardson     Lonnie Farthing    Gwen Sigurdson     Brent Larcombe   Virgil Johnson     Jason Thorsteinson The team has also being joined by 3 new Junior Volunteer Firefighters, Keevin Erickson, Jason Nikkel and Jordan Thorsteinson.   While they can’t join in on emergencies, they will be kept busy training and learning where equipment goes in the firehall. It is important for us in Lundar to remember that these people  are volun‐teers and they train regularly to produce the best outcomes when disaster strikes.  I know we all consider ourselves lucky to have such a dedicated group, waiting in the sidelines to help when they can!

Swan Creek Hatchery was first built in 1928 under the recommenda-tion of Skuli Sigfusson our MLA at the time. The main objective was to conserve the number of pickerel in Lake Manitoba as the number had been dwindling because of commercial fishing. This goal has continued to this day, lead by Jim Brandson, long time and present Supervisor of Swan Creek Hatchery. He is one of only 5 supervisors since the hatchery’s inception. The other four supervisors were G. Butler, Kris Palson, Sigurdur Sigurdson, and Oskar Sigurdson. The hatchery starts getting busy usually the first week in April and goes to the long weekend in May. However this years schedule was a bit different because of the early spring. Luckily last year’s season was not affected by the flood. They had just released the fry, when the flood hit. They had been sandbagging throughout the spring, but had to return in June to shore up their dikes. The worst part of the diking at the hatchery was each and every bag had to be brought out to the hatchery from the Sigurdson Farm by boat (roads flooded), transported from the dock by wheelbarrow and then placed by hand, no bobcats here! When Swan Creek opens in the spring, nets are set across the creek, and the females eggs are taken, placed in containers and then the facil-ity is manned round the clock. There are pumps to be checked and generators to be fueled, these are necessary to keep the water circulat-ing around the eggs and newly hatched fry. Jim has a staff of about 10 people to keep the place running in tiptop shape. Swan Creek Hatchery is an integral part of Manitoba’s ecosystem and plays an important role in the livelihood of Lake Manitoba commer-cial as well as recreational fishermen throughout the province. As well as the financial gains to our community in the form of a 21k budget to run the hatchery, not to mention the wages paid to the all local staff, and the spin offs available to the people who come to our area for the fishing and camping experience. If you would ever like to take a tour of the Swan Creek Hatchery, all you have to do is call 739-3651, and Jim and the guys would love to show you around and share a coffee and a story or two with you.

left Some of the 70M pickerel eggs being cared for at the Swan Creek Hatchery. Re-cently they started putting a dye on the re-leased fry, and last winter stats showed that 58% of all pickerel caught by commercial fishermen were from Swan Creek Hatchery!

Putting that apple core in the trash contributes to global warming.  As it decomposes, organic waste  in landfills can produce methane, which has 25

times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.   Compost those organics instead and
