•Nationalism-pride or devotion to your country...across Africa the goal was to counter the loyalty many had for their tribe over the laws of the nation

•countries were not ready for self-rule-poorly trained or corrupt leaders

•many different cultures, languages and tribes forced to live in the same area

•tribal loyalty over loyalty to the country

•poor or failing infrastructure(highways, hospitals, etc)

•foreign involvement (unfair loans, support for poor leaders, lack of help when needed)
