Message from the Chairman
Welcome to our Spring 2011 production – Thoroughly Modern Millie - the
102nd show in our 58 year history and the first of two shows this year
which we have never staged before; the other being Jesus Christ Superstar
which we are excited to have secured for our autumn show.
These follow our last production, Kiss Me Kate, which I am pleased to
confirm, managed to narrowly escape from ending up ‘in the red’ thanks to
your support and some generous sponsorship.
Enfield Light (as we are fondly known by some) is a special society and the
continued influx of new members over the last twelve months is testament
to the welcome that our members give to new thespians, whether novice
or veteran. Everyone plays a part in large or small measure to the success
of a production whether on the stage or behind or front of house.
Everyone is prepared to 'muck-in' and this comes to the fore in the final
weeks leading up to a show, particularly on ‘tech’ day where it is often 'all
hands to the deck'.
We are an amateur musical theatre company but many people are
surprised that most aspects of our show are professional and the cost of a
production can often exceed £20,000. It is therefore always
a struggle to break-even. Thank you for your support.
If you are interested in getting involved, just give me a call on
07711 316 474 or check out our web site www.elods.org.uk
for more information.
In the meantime, sit back and enjoy.
Mark H Shaw

Thoroughly Modern Millie started out as a 1967 film starring Julie Andrews,James Fox, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing.
The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and five GoldenGlobes. It was one of the top grossing films of that year. ‘TV Guide’ ratedthe film three out of four stars and noted that “this charming spoof of the1920s is one of the 1960s better musicals.”
In 2000 the film was adapted for a successful stage musical of the samename. After try outs in California, the show opened on Broadway in April2002. The production subsequently won six Tony Awards, including BestMusical.
Following its success on Broadway, there followed a US tour and a WestEnd production starring Amanda Holden in the title role, Marti Webb andMaureen Lipman alternating as Mrs Meers and Sheila Ferguson as Muzzy. The production received positive reviews and audiences enjoyed themusical’s comedy and toe tapping melodies.
Now please settle back and enjoy ELODS’ interpretation of this fun show!
