Foreword from the
Founder Family
A Mahrberg Library at the foot of the Himalayas!
The overwhelming hospitality and the beauty of the landscape in this
part of the world are legendary. However, experiencing this directly is
much more than stories can tell.
Our volunteers deliberately did not take the perspective of tourists. The
living conditions in this rural mountain region are not only a challenge for
Europeans, for whom functioning heating, modern sanitary facilities and
uninterrupted power supply are normal.
There is a great need for educational infrastructure in rural Nepal. The
Mahrberg Library in the newly built community center in the province of
Okhaldhunga with hundreds of selected books in Nepalese and English,
computers, internet access and regular online English classes opens up
new opportunities for many children.
We thank the people in Nepal who have welcomed us so sincerely, our
local partner for the initiative and support. We would like to thank all of
our donors who made this project possible and especially our passionate
volunteers who have put a smile on so many faces.

Word on our
Education ProgramsRemarks by our
DirectorThe intention of the Mahrberg Library is to give children the opportunity
to become enthusiastic about learning and acquiring knowledge
through a playful and interactive setting. This is particularly important in
a country like Nepal where most people suffer from deprivation of
education. We conduct various non-formal educational activities such as
arts, music, and outdoor sport activities to give the children the chance
to explore and challenge themselves and their capabilities.
We emphasize on teaching English so the children can continuously
nurture their desire for knowledge through access to the world wide web,
and ongoing conversation with our volunteers from around the world.
Most volunteers come back from our projects with a changed attitude
towards themselves and life. This is our definition of what mutual growth
looks like.
Modern technology gives us great ways of communication, even across
thousands of kilometres. Using this bridge, our
international volunteers hold weekly online
English classes putting an emphasis on
teaching in a playful way. As the children’s
English skills improve, the children strengthen
their bond with the volunteers, and our pursuit
of a global network of volunteers and children is
one step closer to its goal.
We are proud to announce that Mahrberg Foundation has successfully
launched its 6th Mahrberg Library Project in a community learning
center in rural Nepal - a project which couldn’t have happened without
the love and support from our donors, volunteers and partners.
At the end of November, a group of 15 volunteers traveled from Europe to
Kathmandu, Nepal, but this was far from the final destination. A 10-hour
jeep ride - along winding and narrow roads at the foothills of the
Himalaya - awaited the group before reaching the village Nishankhe in
the Okhaldhunga District.
During the 8 days, the local and international volunteers worked tirelessly
to decorate the children’s center, install the book shelves and organize
the books in the library, set up the computers in the computer lab as well
as doing library promotions, art lessons, English classes and fun sports
activities.
We can confidently say that that the volunteers
had life-changing experiences. Our journey
never stops. Mahrberg Foundation will
continue to expand its work to different parts of
the world so that the children we meet can also
live a life for the sake of others through the
great examples of Mahrberg Library volunteers. Nina HarlanderEducation

LibraryThe Community Learning Center is one of a kind in this rural area in
Okhaldhunga, Nepal. It consists of three floors, each floor with multiple
rooms, for educational purposes. In this project we focused mainly on
three rooms; the library, the children’s center and the computer lab.

newly established Community Learning Centre were the Mahrberg
Library find its place and did physical labour. A lot of furniture needed to
be moved, bricks taken away and walls painted. When we came back
from school, we saw the boys working for hours outside until they could
barely see their hands in front of them. This passion and devotion on the
first day were awe-inspiring, and although the arrival was a little
challenging, it showed me once again that these kinds of projects serve
a bigger purpose than ourselves.
I already attended several projects: Mongolia, Cambodia and Nepal. And
I can only say that the energy I feel and the love I encountered is
something that I have never experienced before. We accept each other
the way we are and are bound together through the shared mission to
ignite a spark of hope in the hearts of children
worldwide through education. This spark is not
only ignited in the hearts of the children but in
us as volunteers.
This trip gives us a particular purpose in life, and
I know that I will be part of many more
Mahrberg Library projects to come.
A day in the life of a
Volunteer
Yesterday we arrived at the Community Learning Centre in Okhaldhunga
and instantly realised that these two weeks are going to be a big
challenge for us.
We had a water leak and several power blackouts. Additionally, there is no
heating system, and after the sun goes down, we have to wear hats,
scarfs, winter jackets and gloves to keep us warm inside the building.
Some of our volunteers still have to recover from the bumpy 10-hour drive
for 240 km between Kathmandu and Okhaldhunga. Although there were
several reasons to feel a little down today, our group managed always to
keep a positive mindset. Some of us spent the whole day at the
Raktamala School and taught the children English in a very engaging
and fun way. The classes here in a rural region in Nepal are very
monotone and although it seems like the children can speak some
English when confronted in a simple discussion, they are not able to put
what they learnt into action. It was very inspiring to see how engaged and
enthusiastic the children were about learning numbers, colours and so
much more. You could feel that the children were surprised by our fun
approach to teaching. Additionally, classrooms are made out of bricks,
there were holes in the walls, and the wind was blowing through the
room. To see that many children were coughing strongly, made me very
sad.
At the same time, many of our male volunteers spent the day at the

Thank you for your generous financial support to VIN’s NaraTika
Community Learning Center in Okhaldunga which enables us to open
the Children’s Center, Library and Computer Learning Center in early
February 2020.
The CLC will be a hub of learning for children and young people up to the
age of 15 years in that area. VIN is keen to empower marginalised
communities by developing needs based projects. In Okhaldunga, access
to learning for children is our priority.
With the help of your donation we are a step closer to accomplish our
goal, which is to give every child access to learning opportunities in a fun
and creative way.
We are grateful for the amazing volunteers who cleaned, organized and
decorated the library, computer room, painted
a beautiful mural at Children’s center and
promoted the use of library amongst school
children. They also taught English language
classes to school children and the kids are
looking forward to have more virtual English
learning sessions!

For our project in Nepal we worked closely together with our partner,
Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN). Their mission is to empower
marginalized communities in Nepal by co-creating healthy, self-
sustainable communities where people have access to adequate
sanitation, health care, education and economic opportunity. They do
this through enhanced educational programs and community training
to promote equality, economic well-being and basic human rights.
We commend the efforts of VIN and it was a pleasure to collaborate on
the project. We wish them continued success!
