TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Takeaways for today

• I understand more about DAS- both public safety and cellular

• I know someone to go to for help

• I know more about the wireless market and possible opportunities for me and my customers in the future

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Boiling it down to the essentials

A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) allows wireless devices to effectively operate inside a

building where they normally would not.

Two types of DAS: DAS for public safety

DAS for commercial cellular

Why is DAS an Interesting Discussion Today?

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Why is DAS an Interesting Topic? The Perfect Storm

• Code drives DAS: USGBC LEED Certificationenergy efficient means RF deficient

• Code drives DAS: FirstNetemergency responder radio coverage

• Cellular drives DAS: Smartphones & tabletshigh growth rate, need for productivity!!!

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Challenges With DAS• Who is responsible for the design? Or

how is the design done?

• Who can install and maintain it properly? Or how is the install done?

• Who is paying for this? (funding models)

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORPPage 7

Donor Antenna- Transmits and receives (TxRx) the RF signals from a nearby cellular or public safety tower

Distributed Antenna System (DAS)

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORPPage 8

Base Station- Instead of using the nearby cell tower as a signal source, the wireless carriers may provide a base station on premise, which generates the RF signals. The base station is connected via High Speed lines back to the carriers MSO.

All buildings can benefit from a DAS

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

DO WE NEED A DAS IN OUR BUILDING?

It wasn’t long ago that a DAS was not required by code or necessitated by electronic devices. What changed?

Low E-Glass

Low E glass coatings work by reflecting or

absorbing IR light (heat energy). This same

coating also reflects radio waves, causing

significant in-building wireless coverage

problems.

Market Drivers - Problem Buildings

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Market Drivers – Public SafetyChanges in Fire Code

• City/ county/ using VHF, UHF, and 700 & 800 MHz systems

• First-Responders demanding ubiquitous coverage• New ordinances and building codes mandating coverage

ICC IFC 2009 & NFPA 72 2010, now superseded by IFC 2012 and NFPA 72 2013

2012 IFC

• Chapter 5- Fire Service Features– Section 510.1 Emergency Responder Radio Cover

in New Buildings• All new buildings shall have approved radio coverage

for emergency responders within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety communications systems of the jurisdiction at the exterior of the building.

• Chapter 5- Fire Service Features– Section 510.1 Exceptions

1. Where approved by the building official and the fire code official, a wired communications system… shall be permitted to be installed and maintained …

2. Where it is determined by the fire code official that the radio coverage system is not needed.• This exception may require at minimum, an RF survey

that shows that the building is covered.

– 1. Are more than five stories above the grade plane.– 2. The total building area is 50,000 SF or more.– 3. There are floors used for human occupancy more

than 30’ below the finished floor of the lowers level of exit discharge...

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

HOW IS IT FUNDED

Carrier Funded

Long Term CommitmentThe building owner will be selling the airwaves in his building for an extended period of time, perhaps 10 years or more.

Single Carrier ControlWhatever carrier pays for this system is going to ensure that they have the power they need, even to the detriment of the other carriers.

Signal SourceThe Carrier may be willing to pay for the signal source or system entirely, which is something that the building owner will want to pursue.

3rd Party

Long Term CommitmentThe building owner will be selling the airwaves in his building for an extended period of time, perhaps 10 years or more.

Legal IssuesThese deployments can be long drawn out affairs to get carriers on board.

No ControlThe building owner has no control over the DAS.

True Neutral HostThe system will be designed as a true neutral host system with all carriers receiving an equitable amount of the system resources.

Control of InfrastructureThe owner/representative will own the system in his/her building.

Direct NegotiationsThe building owner/representative will be negotiating directly with the carriers of his/her own choosing removing any third party..

Lease OptionThere may be an option for the owner/representative to shift the project from CAPEX to OPEX through a leasing model.

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

WHY: Cellular/Mobility Growth• 80% of cell phone calls are made within buildings,

only 2%-4% of buildings are wired here in NYC.• Wireless service is becoming the 4th utility

• Are mobile devices becoming more relevant, or less relevant?

• Is there anyone you know who does not (other than by choice) have a cell phone?

• Are more people using their mobile for data and “apps” or less?

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

WHY: BYOD• BYOD mandates a

Service Neutral, Multi Carrier DAS solution

• 40% of devices to access corporate networks are personal

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

Why Telecom?• Extensive experience and rigorous efficiency

standards return the best value in the industry

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

TIC Distributed Antenna Systems Projects/Client ListDAS Projects:Telecom Infrastructure team provides national design, engineering and construction solutions for in-building cellular distributed antenna systems (DAS). We are highly experienced across networks – Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel – for reliable cellular and smart phone service. Telecom Infrastructure has placed in-building DAS in premier New York City buildings, including:

• Goldman Sachs• 200 West Street• Verizon Headquarters 140 West Street• AIG 175 Water Street • AIG 80 Pine• 4 World Trade Center• 4 Times Square• 1 Penn Plaza• 2 Penn Plaza• Barclays 745 on 7th Ave.• Prudential Arena• Palisades Mall

IoT & Recent Spectrum Auction• Internet of Things means massive networks of

connected devices- 50 billion devices by 2020– Sensors are dirt cheap– M2M (machine-to-machine) connections will be drivers of

productivity and efficiency– By 2017: 34% of tablets on cell networks as primary– By 2018: traffic from mobile and wireless exceeds wired

connections

• FCC proceeds nearing $42 billion- 3x the expected revenue– Service providers have to recoup their investment with sale of

data services- 2x build out of infrastructure to support services

TELECOMINFRASTRUCTURE CORP

What will the future of 5G look like?

• A cellular system that supports:– 1000 times higher mobile volume per area– 10 to 100 times the number of connected devices– 10 to 100 times higher typical user data rate– 10 times longer battery life– 5 times reduced end-to-end latency
