Writing at Home

“Do not forget that reading and writing are the two sides of same coin: the

child, who writes frequently, reads and understands more. And the same

occurs the other way round.” - Unknown

What is writing?

• Putting thoughts on paper with words and pictures– Discussing your child’s ideas before they write is a

great way to help them prepare to write.• A form of expression– Children are still learning to express themselves

verbally and through writing. The more they practice the better they will be.

What writing isn’t

• A focus on editing– Inventive spelling is okay– Punctuation and grammar mistakes happen

• Perfection on the first try– Writing is a process: It happens over time not over

night

Encouraging Writing at Home

• Have a journal just for writing time.– Students have one at school as well

• Pick a topic and write with your child• Write down a question for your child to

answer, letting them see that you write too• See handouts of other ways to encourage

writing
