Henry’s Freedom BoxVisualizing

Visualizing is what we call making a picture in your mind using the information from your reading. Good readers pay attention to

what the words describe in the text. They think about the images or pictures that the words help them create in their imagination. Below, record the words Ellen Levine uses to describe each scene.

Henry and his mother meet with his master in the big

house.

Henry worked in a tobacco factory.

Henry met Nancy. Henry’s family is sold.

Henry thinks of freedom. Henry travels to Philadelphia.

Henry’s Freedom BoxSequencing

As we read, it is important to remember the order that things happen in. We want to think about the important events as we read so that we can recall them after we read. One strategy to help us do this is to take notes. If you are reading a passage, you can put a small number above the important event or mark the event in the margin. With books, we can use sticky notes or a graphic organizer. On the “sticky notes” below, record the big events and details related to them.

Question Types

The cards that follow can be used to work on questioning skills such question types, finding text evidence, or notetaking.

How to use them:First, sort the cards according to the type of question before answering to help students learn what information is needed from the text and where to find it. A sorting form is provided for small group instruction. The answers to the questions and question type are on the back of the question if they are cut apart, folded in half and glued together for self checking as a center.

Once you have sorted the questions by type, it is time to answer them. A recording form is included for students to record their responses. You can also use the question cards for group discussion if that is preferred or play SCOOT with them.

Finally, you revisit them to work on text evidence by having your students go back to the book to find proof to support their answers.
