THERMAL ENERGY AND HEAT

Text: Pg. 122 – 133 in Matter and Energy

Video: CLICK TO WATCH THIS VIDEO!11min = thermal energy and heat11min – 22 min = conductors, insulators, heat transfer

Hottest place on Earth Afar Depression (Eastern Africa)

Where is the heat coming from? Magma at the surface

Which has more thermal energy? The Lake or the glass of water? Both are the same temperature

(4oC)

Which has more Thermal Energy? The Lake or the glass of water?

Use your textbook, page 124 – 125 to find this answer.

Explain WHY. Give 2 reasons why you chose your

answer. Write them in your notebook.

Which has more thermal energy? The lake has more thermal energy.

It has more water molecules than a glass of water. It will warm you or freeze you faster than a glass of water.

Thermal energy:

Is the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance

Is measured in joules (J)

Remember: Temperature

Kinetic Energy

Average kinetic energy of a substance.Unit is degree. o

Scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin

Energy of motion (particles/people/things)

• Thermometers are tools that measure temperature(the more kinetic energy of a substance, the higher the temperature). Example: hot water VS cold water

Which is hotter?

Which has more thermal energy?

Candle A cup of hot tea

The candle is hotter. It has a higher temperature.

The cup of tea has more thermal energy. It has moremolecules so it has more total kinetic energy.

Activity: Textbook pg. 125 #6 For each pair, circle the object that

has more thermal energy. Both objects are the same temperature.

Example:Bowl of ice cream

1 scoop of ice cream

Finally, Page 124 #5

Draw a picture of the last paragraph on pg. 124.

Show the flow of thermal energy of the lemonade and the ice cubes. Use arrows for ‘high’, ‘low’, and direction of energy flow.

Quiz: 1. What is the difference between thermal

energy and temperature?

2. What has more thermal energy: a lake or a glass of water?

3. What unit is Thermal energy measured in?

What unit is temperature measured in?

Thermal Energy is the total kinetic energy of a substance.Temperature is the average kinetic energy of a substance.

The lake has more thermal energy. It has more water molecules!

The unit for thermal energy is “J” (joules). The unit for temperature is degree.
