The Shaunavon Communities in Bloom Committee is gearing up for another busy growing season, although the group has already com-pleted several initiatives.
The local CIB’s next big project will be a Centre Street Pocket Park. Volunteers are expected to begin work at the site, located in the empty lot north of Conway’s Restaurant, in the near future.
“This project has been a goal since last year,” said local committee mem-ber Della Moffat. “We will be able to complete the park thanks to two grants we received from Affinity Credit Union along with all the other support that we have received through donations and fundraising.
The town of Shaunavon is providing the CIB Committee with the park space and recently approved plans the local committee has for the site.
Pocket parks are also known as a parkette, mini-park, or vest-pocket park. They are small parks that are accessible to the general public. Pocket parks are frequently created on a single vacant building lot or on small, irregular pieces of land.
CIB CommIttee to Create PoCket Park on Centre
Street
Pocket parks have become very popular in recent years, particular-ly in large urban areas where land is very expensive or in high demand. In some locations, pock-et parks are the only option for creating new public spaces with-out large-scale redevelopment.
Volunteer committee members are also planning another big event later this month when they host the Boomtown Garden Tour. The event, which is slated to take place
on July 20 starting at 6:30 p.m., is being held in conjunction with Shaunavon’s Boomtown Days cele-bration.
CIB members held their first gar-den tour last year and it drew a large number of participants.
“This is a fun fundraiser for Communities in Bloom that every-one of all ages seemed to enjoy,” said Moffat.
Another initiative being intro-duced for the first time this year is CIB’s “Adopt a Flower Bed” pro-gram.
Officials say the project has already received a positive response from the community. In fact, the local Stark and Marsh office has adopted the “Welcome to Shaunavon” flower bed near the town’s main entrance at the intersection of Highway 37 and Third Ave. West. Staff at MNP have also agreed to adopt the Memorial Park flower bed.
“These businesses will be look-ing after these flower beds allow-ing us to focus on our up and coming projects,” said Moffat.
The local CIB committee is still looking for individuals or a group to adopt Sunnynook Park.
“If there is anyone out there, or
a group of friends, organization or business that might have some-time to volunteer, then we have the perfect little flower bed for them,” said Moffat.
CIB will also be continuing its 5 for 5 program. Under the initia-tive, residents and businesses are encouraged to take 5 minutes a day, 5 days per week to look around their property and tidy their space. This community pride initiative was started in 2015.
“Take a few minutes every day to pull weeds, sweep sidewalks, and pick up litter,” said Moffat. “You will see a big improvement not only in the appearance of your individual property, but in the community as a whole. That’s all it takes to make a difference in your residential and commercial prop-erty.”
Members of the Shaunavon CIB usually meet every Thursday eve-ning at 7 p.m. at different loca-tions throughout the community and they invite anyone in the community who wants to get involved to join them. The loca-tions they visit each week are usu-ally posted on the group’s Facebook Page. If the times and dates that are scheduled don’t work for people, but they still want to get involved, then they are more than welcome to schedule a time or place that works for them.
The Committee started its year off with its annual Mother’s Day Planter raffle, which sold out again in 2017. Committee members want to thank everyone who pur-chased a ticket. They also wanted to extended their sincere appreci-ation to the Shaunavon Florist and Garden Center for the donation of the flowers that filled the Planter and all the support they provide throughout the season.
CIB also thanked the Grand Coteau Centre, as well as the Wellness and Leisure Committee, for organizing a special pruning and gardening workshop on June 15. The CIB committee also praised the Town of Shaunavon for all of their support.

MoM’S LEGENDARy STUFFED HAMBURGERS
1 small onion, chopped 4 slices bacon, chopped fresh-ground black pepper 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix 4 hamburger buns
Prepare a grill for medium heat. When hot, lightly oil the grate. Fry the bacon in a skillet over medium heat for about 5
minutes, stirring frequently. Add onions to the pan; cook and stir until bacon is browned, but not crisp and onion is soft. Remove from the pan and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Season to taste with black pepper. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef and onion soup mix. Divide into 8 balls and then flatten into thin patties. Place a quarter of the bacon mixture onto each of four patties. Top with the remaining patties and press the edges together to seal. Grill the burgers for about 15 minutes, turning once, until well done. Serve on buns with your favorite condiments.

Two women were put together as partners in the club tournament and met on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, the first golfer asked, “What’s your handicap?” “Oh, I’m a scratch golfer,” the other replied. “Really!” exclaimed the first woman, suitably impressed that she was paired up with her. “Yes, I write down all my good scores and scratch out the bad ones!”

The passengers were leaving the plane after landing, and one smiling, satisfied
passenger paused to congratulate the flight attendant.
“Stewardess,” he said happily, “I want to compliment you and the crew and especially the captain for getting here
right on time. It’s not often that an airline gets to where it’s going exactly when they claim it will. I’m going to
call your home office and let them know how pleased I am.”
“Why, thank you, sir,” the flight attendant answered, “but I think
you should know something ... this is yesterday’s flight.”
