Amphiox booklet of autumn 2014

Welcome dear amphiox! *

Congratulations, you’ve been admitted to Karolinska Institutet (KI) and have the opportunity to join Medicinska Föreningen (MF) that is the students’ association which represents you and gives you a voice at KI. This booklet will introduce you to many of the things that you need to know and don’t want to miss during the initial weeks of your reception. You’ll also learn about what to do and where to go when your studies become overwhelming and you need to swap over to some social activities.

As presidents of MF, we work full-time to continuously improve its activities in order to suit your specific needs today and tomorrow. Thus, we greatly appreciate your feedback and welcome you to the MF building in Solna or the office in Huddinge to meet us. Finally; make your student life count. These are the precious few years in life when you develop professionally, meet the love of your life, go abroad, move away from home, have some punch at our dinner parties and much more. Many of our best days at KI have been with MF. Make sure yours will be too!

What are the aims of Medicinska Föreningen?

Medicinska Föreningen strives to improve the life of its students both in terms of the actual educational experience but also everything around it. The main principle that is utilised can be summarised as “Three S”. Read more about them below.

Your students’ association has a great influence over the educations provided by KI and devote much time to voice the opinions and concerns of its members. During the entirety of your study period, you can influence your education by primarily turning to your study programme section in MF (see page 8). These are specific working groups that ensure that the students will have the best education possible and seeks to improve the togetherness between new and experienced students, for instance by arranging activities together.

Student influence

Naturally, as a student you shouldn’t only bury your head in the study material. Therefore, many activities are organised to enjoy life when you’re not busy with exam revisions. The MF building is a place for all of us to hang out irrespective of programme or study term. Especially during the introduction weeks you are about to experience. Keep reading to find out more!

Student life

As student you might need help not only with your studies. As a member of MF you are entitled to queue for a place to stay in Stockholm with SSSB, rent our premises to a discounted price and get help by our student and doctoral student ombudsmen and many other things. MF also owns “Medicinska Bokhandeln”, a non-profit book shop avaliable both in Solna and Huddinge where you will find course literature at a cheaper price than you would expect elsewhere. How great!

How do I become a member of MF?

You join Medicinska Föreningen by paying a membership fee when a new term is about to begin for you as a KI student. When everyone is registered by KI as students for the upcoming semester, MF will send out electronic invoices by e-mail to all of the students it represents. This invoice is also accessible online. Thus, you can pay in advance by visiting the Member’s portal website: https://portal.medicinskaforeningen.se. When you’ve registered with the portal, you will receive instructions on how to pay your membership fee by card or bank giro. Additionally, you can also visit the MF office in Solna or Huddinge to get help with your membership. Please refer to the MF website for opening hours. After your payment is confirmed, MF orders a personalised black Mecenat card for you, as depicted below. In order to utilise our membership benefits, you must be able to show this black version of the card with the MF symbol. The card should arrive by regular mail to your semester adress within approximately two weeks after your membership has been registered.
