As the nights start to draw in there’s plenty to look forward to at the Exeter Northcott Theatre this autumn. Among the many highlights, we’re delighted to be hosting the opening performances of Jasmin Vardimon’s restaging of Park and also to be making our own adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Second World War tale An Elephant in the Garden with Poonamallee Productions; if you remember the brilliant Private Peaceful then this is not to be missed. If you would love to come along but have no-one to come with then our new Go Together Club is especially for you – a chance to make new friends and enjoy the theatre (see page 6 for details).

We are celebrating receiving funding from Arts Council England this season and to mark this recognition of your theatre this brochure pays tribute to the fantastic team here at the Theatre. We hope you enjoy the pictures of their trip back to the 1940s through our wonderful costume store, look out for their faces on your next visit.

As ever, we are nothing without you our audience, the Exeter Northcott Theatre is a charity and without your valued support we would not be able to cover the core costs of running our theatre, from the provision of inspiring training and workshops to our crucial everyday supplies. Please take a moment to look at our ENCORE pages to see how you can support us.

Of course the best way to support us is by purchasing tickets, we hope that this brochure inspires you to do just that and look forward to seeing you very soon.

Best wishes

SUMMER SCHOOL 2014

JUST SO Sat 30 August 7pm

Working with ENGAGE Associate Director Polly Agg-Manning and a skilled team of professionals at Exeter Northcott Theatre, our Summer School participants have devised a professional piece of theatre, JUST SO, based around the true story of a soldier in the First World War.

Before the night Jack Kipling went into battle he kept the troops spirits high with his father’s magical stories. For just a few hours the trench was not an unbearable pit of devastation, but an imaginary escape into the Indian Jungle, to the stories of everyone’s childhood and to a place of happiness and hope where everything was JUST SO.

THE QUEEN’S KNICKERS Based on the book by Nicholas Allan

Sun 5 October 3pm

Get your knickers in a twist with this classic comedy for wise young children.

What would you do if you lost the Queen’s pants?

Dilys, the Queen’s maid, is the royal custodian of her Majesty’s ‘intimate apparel’, otherwise known as the Queen’s knickers. She guards HRH’s smalls as if they were the crown jewels. She would be mortified if anyone got a glimpse of them.

But one day the knickers go missing, causing a national state of emergency and a diplomatic incident of catastrophic proportions.

A celebration of the garments we all wear, but never show, this children’s classic is inventively told by two elastic actors.

It’s all about knickers but it definitely won’t be pants!

“How refreshing to see an enjoyable piece about knickers, of all things, which is never lavatorial or grubby - just triumphantly silly.” THE STAGE

PARKThu 9 & Fri 10 October 7.30pm

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon returns with her critically-acclaimed dance theatre production, Park. Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel. Reworked for 2014 with new 3D imaging and multi-talented cast Park presents a breathtaking collision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funky music, delivering fresh statements about our time.

1984by George OrwellA new adaptation created by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan

April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching, and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye.

The definitive book of the 20th century is re-examined in this radical new staging exploring surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever.

Headlong continues to interrogate our most important cultural texts, following productions of Six Characters in Search of an Author, King Lear, Medea, Romeo and Juliet, The Seagull and Spring Awakening. This co-production has previously enjoyed two sell out runs; a national tour in 2013, and seven weeks at the Almeida Theatre in London, followed by three months in the West End in London.

1945. Dresden, Germany. Lizzie, her mother - and an elephant from the zoo, flee the Allied fire-bombing in the end-game of the Second World War. Escaping the Allies’ advance from the West - and also the advancing Russian armies from the East - this extraordinary trio of refugees meet: a downed RAF officer, cowering in a barn; a homeless school choir on the run and their Countess saviour, harbouring them from the Nazis; and the mechanised American cavalry, appearing over the horizon.

It is Lizzie’s story – but Marlene, the elephant, is the heroine. Plodding, obdurate, opportunistic, load-bearing, indestructible, cheering - Marlene embodies the stubbornness of the human will and how it will do everything to survive.

An Elephant in the Garden is the new adaptation by Simon Reade from Michael Morpurgo’s best-selling children’s novel. It is very much in the theatrical mould of their previous collaborations on Michael’s war stories Toro! Toro!, The Mozart Question and the theatrical touring phenomenon Private Peaceful.

English Touring Opera returns to Exeter for another season of baroque splendour. These two masterpieces by Handel and Haydn are wildly different. One is lofty and heartbreaking, the other a razor-sharp comedy. Both are performed with the Old Street Band, ETO’s acclaimed baroque period orchestra.

LIFE ON THE MOON // HAYDNWed 19 & Thu 20 November 7.30pm

One of the most popular of Haydn’s many operas, Life on the Moon (Il mondo della luna) is a fast moving and funny treatment of a classic farce by Carlo Goldoni.

To trick an elderly scrooge, his daughter and her suitor - disguised as an ‘astronomer’ - convince him that he has flown to the moon.

Cal McCrystal, the comedy director behind the National Theatre’s smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors, directs this new production. The score includes some of Haydn’s finest vocal writing, including two wonderful, spirited, extended finales which anticipate the music of Mozart and Beethoven. Sung in English

OTTONE // HANDEL Fri 21 & Sat 22 November 7.30pm

If you’ve enjoyed ETO’s popular productions of Handel comedies Flavio, Xerxes and Agrippina in Exeter in recent years, you can expect equally ravishing music in one of the composer’s most successful serious operas, Ottone.

Written for the greatest singers of the day, it dazzles with a treasure trove of tearful and brilliant arias, many of which are regularly performed in concert. The romantic story of a 10th century German Emperor and his Byzantine bride is both exotic and compelling, featuring an unusually rich exploration of the characters and, in the extraordinary second act, a dramatic sea cave setting. Sung in English

ANTIGONEA new version by Roy WilliamsDirected by Marcus RomerDesigned by Joanna Scotcher

Wed 26 - Sat 29 November 7.30pm

When Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone’s unruly brother, her anger quickly turns to defiance. Creon, in an attempt to retain control, condemns her to a torturous death - she’s to be buried alive.

Acclaimed playwright, Roy Williams (Kingston 14, Sucker Punch), takes Sophocles’ play and by placing it into a contemporary setting brings Thebes into the 21st Century, reinforcing this tales relevance and vitality.

This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, human nature and human behaviour. It is a story about what happens when one person stands against the rules. About how we make meaning out of life and death and what, in the end, really matters.

EXHIBITIONSSeptember 2014 - January 2015

ROBIN DOYLE (The Bar)TOM STEVENSON & MARIA ROSE (The View) 1 September - 19 October Robin is a Devon-based artist who works in a number of media. His pieces draw from many sources, including street art and the natural world. His work can be both challenging and provocative and strongly advocates non-violence, individualism and anarchy (in its true sense of the word: self-determination and personal responsibility) over corporate-sponsored war, collectivism and the ever-encroaching state. His work has shown in Brighton, London, Harrogate and locally in the South West.

Tom and Maria are local artists; both studied fine art at Plymouth University (in Exeter) and are exhibiting at Exeter Northcott Theatre for the first time.

UPON MY WORD

20 October - Sun 2 NovemberDaisi and professional artists have produced this intriguing visual arts exhibition with several primary schools from Exeter and beyond. The artwork and creative writing on view has been inspired by Michael Morpurgo’s An Elephant in the Garden to accompany Exeter Northcott Theatre’s new production.

This event has been developed in partnership with the University of Exeter’s Graduate School of Education and Exeter Northcott Theatre.

ALASDAIR URQUHART – NATURE’S TIMELESS PLAY

3 - 30 NovemberAlasdair Urquhart’s vast body of work encompasses a huge range of subjects, related both to Nature and the human experience. Subtle energies light up his work, giving one brief glimpses into the otherworldly character of his vision through the flow and play of colours. His paintings convey his love of and affinity with the natural world and its forces: landscapes, seas and skies, animals, mythical and human figures, glowing with life. GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE

9 December - 4 January During December come and explore within the theatre’s foyer the wonders of George’s Marvellous Medicine in this visual art installation of large-scale collaborative artwork. Working with professional Daisi artists this interactive exhibition has been created by children from primary schools throughout Devon.

This project is part of an ongoing relationship between Daisi and the Exeter Northcott Theatre. Daisi is the arts education organisation working across Devon and Torbay to develop quality arts engagement opportunities for children and young people. For more information on the project visit Daisi’s website www.daisi.org.uk

GETTING HERE IS EASYSituated at the heart of the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, the Exeter Northcott Theatre is easier to get to than you might think, with good public transport links and plenty of FREE parking a short distance from the theatre.

Getting here by busThe D and H buses run from Exeter City Centre direct to our theatre 7 days a week including Bank Holidays. However we recommend you catch the D bus if you are travelling from the city centre as the route is more direct.

The last D services from the city centre to Exeter Northcott for evening shows Monday to Saturday are at 6.30pm (for 7pm shows), 7pm (for 7.30pm shows) and 7.30pm (for 8pm shows). Sunday D services start at 9am, then 9.30am and then at 55 and 25mins past the hour until 11.10pm.

Stocker Road is open to pedestrians and cyclists only. Vehicles should enter the campus from Prince of Wales Road via Streatham Drive and then The Queen’s Drive, before joining North Park Road and then Rennes Drive (please see map below).

The biggest demand for parking at Streatham Campus is expected to be between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Friday during the

University term. For this reason we now only schedule schools matinee performances during term time and advise customers to travel to the theatre by coach for these performances.

This map will help you find the car parks. For up to date information about planning your visit please contact the Box Office on 01392 493 493, visit our website or check the information we send you with your tickets.
