AN ANALYSIS OF CHRIS GARDNER’S FATHERHOOD ON GABRIELE

MUCCINO’S FILM “THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS”

ABSTRACT

Fatherhood is the state or the character of being a father. In regards to

parenting style, fatherhood can be defined as the parenting style of a father to his

children. Fatherhood is seldom being the concern of research topic in literature

whereas, in social life, it is essential to know and learn more how a father

educates their children. Therefore, this research focused on investigating the

fatherhood elements of Chris Gardner within “The Pursuit of Happyness” film.

The purpose of the study were to find out the fatherhood elements of Chris

Gardner and how it effects to the Child’s growth on Gabriele Muccino’s film”

The Pursuit of Happyness”

This research used the descriptive qualitative research design which is

shown by words and events to find out the fatherhood elements and how those

elements effect the growth of a child. In analyzing the data, objective approach

was conducted since it focuses on the contents within the literary work. The data

were analyzed in the forms of scenes, events, and dialogues which are related to

the problems of study. The object of this study is Gabriele Muccino’s film “The

Pursuit of Happiness”.

The result of this research showed that the fatherhood elements found in

“The Pursuit of Happyness” film are involvement, consistency, awareness, and

nurturance. After analyzing the film, it can be concluded that the true essence of

fatherhood elements comes from the responsibility of being a parent and love for

a son. Furthermore, based on the film, the previously stated elements above have

the influence toward the attitude of Chris Gardner’s son, Christopher, who is

changing spoiled and unfriendly into an empathy boy and closer to his father.

Keywords: fatherhood, fatherhood elements, parenting style.
