ABSTRACT

WIDODO, EVELINA (2021) An Analysis of Figurative Expressions in Celine

Dion’s Love Songs.Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters.

Universitas Sanata Dharma.

Every lyric in a song has a relation with feeling of its singer. Figurative

expression can express feeling and make the meaning deeper. This undergraduate

thesis analyzes five selected songs sung by Celine Dion: ”My heart will go on”,

“Beauty and the Beast”, “Falling into you”, “Because you loved me”, and “That’s

the way it is”. This thesis has two objectives. First, it explains the figurative

expressions and their meaning in the five love songs. Second, to categorizes the

figurative expressions observed in the song lyrics.

This research is a qualitative research which describes how the data are

observed. The data, which are figurative expressions, were identified in the songs

and they were analyzed based on the meanings and their types. Further, with the

help of the figurative expressions, the themes of the songs were identified,

There 38 data of figurative expressions found in the song lyrics. Based on

the findings of the research, it can be concluded that figurative expressions in these

songs often contain affective meaning because they often reveal the singer’s

emotion throughout the songs. As for the answer to the second problem, among the

figurative expressions there are two personifications, three symbolisms, five similes,

eight hyperboles, ten imageries, and ten metaphors.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Figurative expression is an expression word used to show expressions, such

as simile, metaphor, personification, symbolism, hyperbole, and imagery, while

language is a tool to communicate and explain something. Every single sentence

must have a relation with the language.Without language, we would never share

many things in this world. Creative aspects of language can create a great sentence

and make everyone understand the new ruling and the new words (book of

Fromkin,10th edition, p 5). The researcher chose songs from Celine Dion in this

study because Celine Dion has sung many songs about love and she usually sing

songs that include beautiful words as figurative expressions. Many songs about love

contain figurative words, but Celine Dion’s songs have meaning deeper than those

in other songs. The researcher chose Celine Dion’s because in the songs there are

many metaphors so that there are specific meanings in the lyrics. The songs are

usually targeted at teenagers in love and the lyrics are always rich in figurative

expression.

In this study, the researcher uses semantic theories to explain in detail the

words and the phrases which are figurative expressions. Semantic theories classify

meanings into two: literal meaning and non-literal meaning. The literal meaning is

to share in the real referent of an expression, while the non-literal meaning is the

hidden meaning found in the figurative language, which can express an idea

2

imaginatively. Celine Dion often sings a song about love because she wants to show

her feeling not just from the word but also from themes using figurative expression

to make a deep meaning that makes people who hear can feel the song. Semantics

initially explains the phrase as a tool to express feeling. It means that semantic need

the term to study how languages organize and express meanings. The figurative

expression in the song will make knowledge about the real meaning from the music

from Celine Dion itself. This figurative expression itself will contribute to the song.

Celine Dion always makes a song about love that includes a soft meaning using the

figurative expression in every lyric she writes and consists of profound sense.

B. Problem Formulation

Based on the background of the study of this corpus, the researcher has two

formulated research questions:

1. What are the figurative expressions and their meanings found in the five

selected love songs by Celine Dion?

2. How can the figurative expressions in the song be categorized?

C. Objectives of the Study

Based on the problem formulation above, there were two objectives. First,

the researcher identified the figurative expressions in the five songs that the

researcher studied. This researcher also identified the meaning of the figurative

expressions. Second, this research categorized the figurative expressions in their

relevant categories.

D. Definition of Term

Figurative language is language which contains figures of speech or

imageries. According to Madden (2002, an imagery is an expression which can

create a mental picture. Madden (2002, p 62) states that “an image is a mental

picture prompted by words”. Further he states that “Images results from concrete

language that appeals to our senses”.

Love songs were taken as the sources of the data for this research. According

to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, a love song is “a lyrical, musical, or poetic

expressionof romantic love” (https://www.merriam-webster.com,= accessed on

July 31, 2021).

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This chapter presents reviews of related studies, where concepts and

variables relevant to this present study will discuss ideas and variables pertinent to

this current study. In this part, the first is to examine the thinking of associated tasks,

which is about the similarities and the different topic with the researcher's object.

The second is about the review of related theories, which explains the approach

used in this object. The third is the theoretical framework discussing the theory that

the researcher analyzed about the figurative expression.

A. Review of Related Studies

The first studies that related to this research are created by Dicky (2013) in

his study,“Cognitive Linguistic Analysis of Love Metaphors in Ed Sheeran’s

Songs”. In his research, he analyzed the figurative language, especially Metaphor

in Ed Sheeran’s song album. This study focused more on cognitive linguistics and

showed the love metaphor's conceptual meaning from Ed Sheeran. The object in

Dicky’s research is about mentioning the figurative language, especially the

cognitive-linguistic concept of love metaphor in Ed Sheeran’s song.

The difference between the related study and this research is the main

theories. These were related studies using cognitive linguistics as the main theories,

and this research using semantic as the main theories. The similarity between the

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 20: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

5

related research and this research discusses the figurative expression in song lyrics,

especially in a love song.

The second study is created by Fransisca (2012) in her research “A Study of

Figurative Language in The Script’s Album No Sound without Silence”. In her

research, she analyzed all types the figurative languages in Album No Sound

without Silence. This research uses the fact and the information from the lyrics one

by one from the album and then defines some groups. Shortly, this research focuses

more on all types of figurative language and this research analysis in one album.

The similarity with the study is about figurative expression in the song and analysis

one by one using the semantic theory.

The third related study is a journal article by Ibrahim (2019) entitled “The

analysis of figurative language in Endless Love song Lyric” from the Department

of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas

Muhammadiyah Sorong. This journal is more focused on figurative language from

Endless love song lyrics. In this journal, there were explanations about the lyrics,

which consist of figurative language. The conclusion is this journal article more

dominant with figurative expression repetition and hyperbole. The similarities

between the journal and this research are the approach and the object. This journal

uses a semantic system, and the thing is a figurative expression from a selected song.

The fourth related study is a journal article from Stella Vania Ardhyanti

(2020) entitled “Figurative Language Analysis in Celine Dion’s Song Lyrics

Falling Into You Album” from IKIP Siliwangi. This journal aims to identify the

figurative language in a selected song lyric, especially Falling into You. This

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 21: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

6

journal focuses on the dominant figurative language and the contextual meaning of

the song. This journal and this research are about semantic theory. This journal's

conclusion is consists of four figurative languages: metaphor, imagery, simile,

symbolism, and personification. This journal used contextual meaning to

understand the hidden meaning in the song lyrics.

B. Review of Related Theories

This part will review the theory of semantic because figurative expression

is part of semantic studies. Figurative terms were related to meaning, and the

intention has connected the purpose into the part of semantic. Based on the problem

formulation, the theories will focus on the essential things about figurative

expression from five love song lyrics that the researcher chooses.

1. Figurative Expression

Figurative expression is usually used to show words, such as simile,

metaphor, personification, symbolism, hyperbole, irony, synecdoche,

onomatopoeia, metonymy, apostrophe, allegory, paradox, and understatement.

There are the types of figurative expressions:

a. Metaphor

According Perrine (1977:61) metaphors are the one of figurative language

which used in literary works. The history of the word “Metaphor” is from a Greek

metaphor which means “transfer” or “carry over.” Both of them come from a

derivation Meta as “across, over” and Pherein as “carry.” Usually, metaphors are

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 22: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

7

used in daily language to compare two things, indirectly showing almost similar

words metaphor as the fundamental language of literature.

According to Lakoff & Johnson, metaphor are not only a device of the poetic

imagination. Metaphor divided into three groups such as namely: structural

metaphor, orientational and ontological metaphor. The structural metaphor is

one concept metaphorically structured in terms of another. (Lakoff & Johnson,

1980). Orientational metaphor is the concept of forming a number of metaphors,

such as “up-down”, “front-back”, “in-out”, and “deep-shallow”. Based on speakers'

physical and cultural experiences, orientational metaphors can be different from

one culture to another (Lakoof & Johnson, 1980. Pp 14 ). The ontological

metaphor is the metaphorical concept that governs one's perspective in perceiving

the experience as an entity (Lakoff & Johnson 1980. Pp 66). An example is "time

is a substance" it is a metaphor because one senses that time can be "quantified"

and use the specific goal. The metaphor also has many types, which are:

1. The primary metaphor is the basis of analogy. In this type, two items are

comparing, side by side, and the meaning is clear. Example: "love is blind"

and "patience is a virtue." In these metaphors, two sentence are compared,

the meaning is clear.

2. Complex metaphor is a combination of primary it is mean that will compare

it to two or more items. Example: "Travel is no more than a sorcerer's

cauldron full of emeralds."

3. A dead metaphor is like a cliché. This metaphor usually uses in literary work.

But, usually, this metaphor uses to invoke an eye roll-on sarcasm. Example:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 23: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

8

"I'd be lost without you?" this sentence is deliberately used to mocking irony.

Creative metaphor is considered from own idea to make the audience

understand with your words. Example: "The castle door whooshed open,

reaching for her faster than a knight's gauntlet."

4. Extended metaphor is you'll be able to take that metaphor and keep referring

back to it throughout an entire paragraph or the whole of your work.

Example: the character might go on to notice that his gauntlet was colder

than her brother's scowl. This type is romantic, because it is real can refer

back to it a time or two again.

b. Simile

Based on Merriam Webster, simile comes from the Latin words “similis,”

meaning similar, which seems fitting. The comparison indicated by a simile will

typically contain the words as or like. According to Gory Keraf (Book of diction

and style, 2001. Pp 138), A simile is a comparison that is explicit that it implies the

same thing with other things. A simile is an announced comparison. Similes always

use like, or as to showing the figurative expression. Example: tune as old as song.

c. Hyperbole

According to Jess Zafarris, hyperbole comes from the Latin word Greek. It

mean an obvious/extreme exaggeration. Hyperbole means exaggeration,

extravagance” but meant “a throwing beyond’.The Greek hyperboleis formed of

hyper- “beyond” + bole “a throwing, a casting, the stroke of a missile, bolt, beam.”

Bole is the nominative stem of ballein, “to throw,” from the PIE root gwele- “to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 24: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

9

throw, reach,” which also influences words such as ballistic, ballet, metabolism,

parable and symbol. For the example from song lyrics because you loved me, “you

were my strength when I was weak” it is mean that the partner in a relationship is

the power to make the connection is good ( Lyric as cited in Aning Jati, P. 9 )

d. Personification

This figurative expression gives human habits to non-living objects.

Personification is a unique feature of metaphor, which makes an analogy of things,

talk, like humans (Gory Keraf theory in the book entitled diction and style 2001. Pp

140). Example:” And can you feel the love tonight? How it’s laid to rest” this

sentence means love cannot feel but love as always be the better place to relax.

e. Imagery

According to Frank Madden, imagery consists of descriptive language,

which can make imagination about the object. It will draw on five senses which are

taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound. There are three types of imagery:

1. The auditory describe what we hear. The examples are music, noise, silence.

2. Visual is describing what we see. The examples are colors, patterns, shapes,

size

3. Tactile is describing what we touch or feel. The examples are texture,

movement, temperature.

Page 25: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

10

f. Symbolism

Symbolism defines as any object, person, event, gesture, place, etc.,

representing something other than itself. Symbolism is present everywhere in our

daily life. Symbols are sometimes referred to as “Literary Symbol” because they

can define character in all things. Symbolism represents more than itself, subject to

personal interpretation (Frank Madden, 2004. Chp 3, Pp 60). Example: The walls

begin to tumble down. This sentence means the word “walls” as the heart defence,

which showed the wall started to wrecked that the heart started to hurt.

g. Irony

The irony is the type of figurative expression that gives a statement in which

words are using so that their intended meaning differs from the actual meaning of

the words (Perrine 2004, Pp 103). An example of irony is Dickinson's sentence. She

uses irony in her conviction, "the truth must dazzle gradually "this sentence means

that she does not think that the fact must overwhelm, but it must inform with the

way that they can understand.

h. Synecdoche

Synecdoche is a figure of speech by which a part that put for the whole, for

example, fifty sail for fifty ships. The whole piece is a society for high society

and refers to a literary device in something substituted for the whole. (Merriam

Webster Dictionary). Example: Green thumb this sentence means that it signifies

the person who is good at gardening.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 26: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

11

i. Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a sound that has a relationship with buzz or hiss, and it is

referring to the use of the words which have sound suggests in a sense. This

figurative expression is the use of imitating the sounds associated with the object

or the actions. Word Onomatopoeia comes from the adjectives

word “onomatopoeic/onomatopoetic.” It is sometimes called a figure of speech of

sound rather than a figure of speech. Because onomatopoeia has its meaning in itself

in different languages , it uses words that sound entirely different to represent the

same sound(Collins English Dictionary). These words come from

Greek, onoma meaning "name" and poiein meaning "to make," so onomatopoeia

means "to make a name (or sound). One example of onomatopoeia is the words slap.

It means not only sound made my skin hitting skin but also the action of hitting

someone.

j. Metonymy

Metonymy uses the term linked to standing in for an object or concept

(Merriam Webster Dictionary). It can find this figurative expression in daily life in

everyday speech or maybe might use it yourself without even realizing it, is also

found in the literature. An example of metonymy is "Pen", which stands for "the

written word." This figurative comes from the Greek phrase metōnymía it means

"a change of name."

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 27: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

12

k. Apostrophe

An apostrophe is representing about exclamation (Based on Webster

Dictionary). This figurative expression also presents a form of personification in

which animate thing that directly addressed as if it were animate. An example of

the apostrophe is blowing winds, blow! It means that the winds are the apostrophe,

because “wind” is something that can be felt even though it cannot be seen with the

eyes.

l. Allegory

Allegory is the figurative expression that has a hidden meaning, and it works

of art, such as story, painting, and in which events act as a symbol. The characters

in this figurative expression are symbols that represent particular ideas, and can be

interpreted deeper meaning. Allegory and metaphor seem similar, but actually they

are different. Metaphor is a short of phrase which compares two apparently

unrelated things. While allegory is a long narrative that uses an apparently unrelated

story to show prove a point. Example: I particularly venerated Mr. Wopsle as

Revenge, throwing his blood-stained sword in thunder down and taking the

war-denouncing trumpet with a withering look (Dickens 1965, P.p 74).

m. Paradox

A paradox is the most used to express astonishment or disbelief at

something unusual or unexpected in everyday communication (Encyclopedia of

Rhetoric). This figurative expression shows conflicting statements. It is compressed

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 28: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

13

only from few words called an oxymoron. Word comes from a

Greek paradox meaning "incredible, contrary to opinion or expectation." Example:

A time traveler goes back in time and murders his own great-grandfather. This

sentence means the time traveller killed his grandfather, meaning that the time

traveller cannot exist. But if he does not live, then there’s no one to kill the

grandfather, and thus he must exist. It called logical paradoxes because from this

characterize are many reasons why time travel is a problematic proportion.

n. Understatement

Understatements are figurative expressions used to denote a situation that

seems less important than it is. This function of this figurative expression is the

tool that can help develop other figures of speech like sarcasm by wittingly to

reduce the severity of a situation when the hearer or the reader accepts the strong

suggestion. (Perrine, 2004,p.102). An example of understatement is “He is not too

thin.” It means that describing an obese person.

2. Semantics

It is more focused on phrases and words. The study of semantics is also

closely linked to the subjects of representation, reference, and denotation. In

figurative expressions, it needed semantics to analyze the figurative expression

because semantic is the critical thing in figurative expression. After all, it contains

the words which have a meaning.

Page 29: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

14

In semantics, it will be divide into two parts:

1. Literal language is using words according to the meaning of denotation,

which is accepted conventionally. It means that literal language can show

the denotation meaning of the figurative expression.

2. Figurative language (non-literal) is using the word that has meaning inside

the word. Figurative language usually expresses and shows the feeling often

created by presenting words to be equated, compared, or associated with

typically unrelated purposes.

Semantic itself has two important ideas: the branch of linguistics and logic

concerned with the meaning, which is the logical semantics. It will be discussed

with the matters like sense and the reference, presupposition, and implication and

then lexical-semantic, which is concerned with the analysis of words meaning and

relation with the terms.

There are eight types of meaning in semantic: conceptual meaning,

connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning,

collocative meaning, associative meaning, and thematic meaning (Leech, 1981).

a. Conceptual meaning

Conceptual meaning is the primary type of semantics. This meaning study

about essential components of meaning which are conveying by the literal use of a

word. The example of conceptual meaning is, woman= + Human, -Male, +

Adult”.

Page 30: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

15

b. Connotative meaning

Connotative meaning is the communicate value an expression has by what

if refers to over and purely conceptual meaning (Leech, 1981). This type is

concerned with the accurate word expressions one uses or hears. The connotative

meaning words whose meaning cannot be taken directly from the dictionary, so it

must analyze it individually.

c. Social meaning

Social meaning is something express the conveys the contexts or social

circumstances of its use. This meaning includes the stylistic of an utterance. It is

the formality of the expression (Leech, 1981:9). An example is I haven’t done

anything. It means that the speaker is the black American underprivileged and

uneducated.

d. Affective meaning

Affective meaning is the sense that to show emotions, we rely upon the

mediation of the other categories of meaning-conceptual, connotative, or stylistic

(Leech, 1981). It is about the personal feeling in that context. An example is a

mother is for a motherless child. This types usually convey the sense and the attitude.

e. Reflected meaning

This types happened in multiple conceptual meaning, which is

communicated through association with another sense of the same expressions. This

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 31: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

16

type also means taboo words. This type happened when one sense of the word It

occurs when one sense of word forms part of our response to another sense (Leech,

1981)

f. Collocative meaning

This type of study of words, phrases, and sentences is based on the

association with the terms and will see in another environment. (Leech, 1981, Pp

17). The example is handsome, beautiful, cute, sweet.

g. Associative meaning

This type is the study of the phrase, sentence, or words showing an

expression of the context, is referring to the characteristics beyond the denotative

meaning that people commonly think in relation word or a phrase, also famous as

the expressive meaning and stylistic meaning ( Leech, 1981).

h. Thematic meaning

This type is about explaining the part of the meaning of the sentence is

commonly defined that is not part of their proportional of the thematic meaning

content (Lyons,1995:154).

3. Love song

Love songs usually consist of content about falling in love, heartbroken.

Based on Merriam Webster dictionary love song deals joys and sorrows of love.

Every theme of music is a sentence about discussing. Love songs are founds in the

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

17

histories and cultures of most societies. Most of Celine Dion's song always tells

about love, especially about the heart to heart, a song about falling in love or music

about heartbroken. In each song's lyrics, she always uses figurative expression to

make the verse have more deep meaning to the hearer. The human voice is a very

powerful musical instrument in its own right. It also has the unique advantage

among other instruments of adding language to music, with lyrics. The quality of

lyrics has a great impact on the overall effectiveness of a song. In love song usually

use word that show a happiness or sadness depends from the song writer.

Based on Literary device, there afe four of types of the song, such are:

1. Coming of age: it means that someone growing up and becomes who they

are mean to be.

2. Death: sometimes, this theme is the only way that understands someone

passing.

3. Disillusionment: Disappointment is a theme that has grown in popularity.

A theme in punk-style music has become a theme in nearly every music

genre

4. Feminism: talk about early, about a heart to heart about woman’s feeling.

C. Theoretical Framework

In this section, the researcher analyzed figurative expressions in songs from

Celine Dion, especially about love songs. To answer the research problem, first,

this study needs to seek the object of the research. The thing found when the theory

of the figurative. The next step is to classify the figurative expression according to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

18

the type. This step will apply with the idea of equivalence, which the result of the

objective.

According to Kovecses (1986), the semantic theory helps to analyze the

conceptual figurative expression since this research analyses abstract figurative

expression. The researcher uses Kovecses’s approach because the theory consists

of the concept of figurative expressions. Concept Kovecses used as references.

From this theory, it will be showed the literal and non-literal meaning as the type

from semantic. Each type have the difference characters.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter consists of 3 parts. This first part will analyze the study's objectives,

which explains the figurative expression that consists of the song lyrics that choose.

A second part is an approach to the task about an approach used in this study. The

third part is the study method. It explains the way that used in this study. The way

of the study will be divide into two parts, which are: Data collection and data

analysis.

A. Object of the Study

The object of this study is the figurative expression found in the love song

lyrics of Celine Dion, which the researcher chooses. The researcher would analyze

five love songs from Celine Dion. The selected songs are “My heart will go on,”

“Beauty and the Beast,” “Falling into you,” “Because you loved me,” “That’s the

way it is.” Her song used figurative expression to make the lyrics have a more

profound meaning.

The reason why the researcher choose a song from Celine Dion because she

makes songs using deep-meaning words. The songs usually are targeted at

teenagers who are in love because her songs are always about love with someone,

and the lyrics are always rich with a figurative expression that very expressive.

Five songs that the researcher choose have a figurative expression in each

lyric which has a meaning to show the feeling. This research used qualitative

research to understanding the object. This research uses purposive sampling

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 35: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

20

because the sample easy to get and accurate because the lyrics can find on the

internet. The criteria of the selection are the lyrics from Celine Dion that include

figurative expressions. Every song that chosen by the researcher consists of

figurative language in each lyric. All song is about telling a love story, in other

words, all song from Celine Dion always make feel enjoy when to hear the song.

The situation can carry it away because using figurative expression makes lyrics

more beautiful and profound.

A little bit of explanation about each song that the researcher chooses: the

first song, “My Heart will Go on,” is used for theme song in the Titanic movie in

1997. This song is showing about social class as a significant factor that separates

them. In this song, the author says that they still keep in our hearts. They don’t

matter about the social class. The second song, “Beauty and the Beast,” is the

theme song from a Disney movie that tells about the romance story, which was a

happy ending in that story. This song tells about where the prince cursed an evil

witch found a beautiful girl with a good appearance after he catches her father. The

author suggests that this song showing that love a strange one, but from all, it can

change to be a good act. The third song, “Falling into you,” shows that true love

certainly has the power to love for a life partner. The fourth song, “Because you

love me,” this song tells that someone who was there at the wrong time to correct

her and to keep her from stumbling. Someone gave her joy and pushed her to pursue

her dreams. These lyrics that is mention “baby” it is showing that she is referring

to her lover. Last, “That’s the way it is,” a song about perseverance. This story

tells that true love can get that we who truly believe in it.

B. Approach of the Study

This study will explain this study's figurative expression. The style of

language in figurative expression can be a foundation of the data analysis.

According to Fromkin (1998, Pp 1), language style is the choice of words used by

someone or the specific of people when speaking or writing. The language is more

expressive in figurative expression because it uses creative words to make the

sentence have a meaning but uses different words. Interpretation figurative

expressions compared figurative interpretation expressions in language and

expression to analyze the importance of expression itself.

This data will use in the semantic approach. Semantics is a toolkit for

meaning, which is knowledge encoded in the vocabulary of the language and its

patterns for building more elaborate definitions up to the level of sentence meaning

(Patrick Griffiths, 2006. Pp 1). Semantic can relate to the figurative expression

because the figurative expression has many meanings (Patrick Griffiths, 2006. Pp

2). In semantic, it will show the literal meaning, which is the importance could find

in the dictionary, while non-literal meaning it is have hidden meaning that it is

unique. In semantic famous with “Semantic properties” in this context, it will show

the shared property about the data. Semantics properties are the components of the

meaning of words. For the example “She is my rose” from the dictionary, the literal

meaning of rose is a flower, and this meaning already accurate because there is the

source. In contrast, the rose in non-literal definition showed that “Rose” is unique

because the physic rose looks beautiful, smells good, and makes everyone fall in

love with that flower.

C. Method of the Study

This part contains the purpose of making the process analysis more detailed,

and this part consists of the method applied to lead this study. It will be divided into

two parts, which are data collection and data analysis. Those methods will describe

as follows:

1. Data Collection

In this part, the researcher will explain how the researcher got the data for

the subject. The researcher will be analysis five data from Celine Dion's song. The

data collected the data by applying purposeful sampling. According to Gomez

(2013, Pp 32 ), purposeful sampling will be used in qualitative research to identified

the selected information for the limited sources. The first step is to do an

observation about the Celine Dion song. The second step is to read the song lyrics

according to the selected song, after finish read and then analysed the figurative

expression from those songs. Then, it will interpret five songs.

Lincoln's (2000) qualitative research claims that qualitative research

involves an interpretive and naturalistic approach. Qualitative research is a study

about something and tries to understand the meaning that people know( Lincoln,

2000. P.p 3). The data from collects and analyses non - numerical data like text,

video, or audio to understand the concepts. The data of figurative expressions were

obtained from five song lyrics by Celine Dion. In the selection of data, the

researcher chooses five-song, especially love song from Celine Dion, which are

"My heart will go on," "Beauty and the Beast," "Falling into you," "Because you

Page 38: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

23

loved me," and "That's the way it is”. First, the researcher read the lyrics carefully

and find the meaning from the songs and identify from any resources. Second, the

researcher explain categorization of the songs, then analyze the lyrics' importance

according to the type of figurative expression. It is to make it more accessible for

the researcher to examine the object.

2. Data Analysis

First of all, the researcher identified the figurative expression of Celine Dion

selected love songs. Then, the researcher finds the meaning of the word that is not

taken from the dictionary. After the researcher found the word which contains a

figurative expression, the researcher categorized the type of figurative expression

from Celine Dion love songs. Then, it will found the related characteristic in each

figurative expression that have done analyzed. After categorizing the type of

figurative expression, it will examine the meaning from the semantic theory by

finding out the meaning of Celine Dion’s love song in the Merriam Webster and

Collins Dictionary. To find the meaning, the researcher must find out the semantic

feature first to identify the conceptual meaning and relate it with the context of the

song lyric from Celine Dion.

Secondly, the researcher figures out the categorization of a selected song by

Celine Dion from the types of figurative expressions analyzed in problem one. To

categorized the song, the researcher analyzed the song one by one according to the

types of figurative expression. It will discuss it according to figurative expression

and the lyrics from Celine Dion’s that already collected. The analysis will show the

figurative expression that Celine Dion uses in most of her songs.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the researcher discusses the answer to the research questions, which

were showed in Chapter 1. The parts below offer the type of figurative expression

found in the Love song’s lyrics by Celine Dion and identifying the meaning of the

song’s lyrics.

A. The Figurative Language Types found in the Song Lyrics

There will be six types of figurative expressions from the fourteenth types

of figurative expression discusses in the previous chapter. Thus, six types of

figurative expressions in the data found from the five songs analyzed before. They

are symbolism, personification, simile, hyperbole, imagery, and metaphor. The

frequency will show in table 1.

Tabel 1. Frequency types of figurative expressions in love song lyrics

In table 1 it is showing the total of the data of the figurative expression in

love song lyrics by Celine Dion in five song, such as Beauty and the Beast, My

There are six types of figurative expression which shown in the table are found in

song lyric and the five song. The table shows that metaphor is the dominant

figurative expression from five songs.

The figurative language will analysis one by one from the lyrics. Using the

figurative expression is for knows the meaning of the real meaning that the writer

wants. The figurative expression analyses with semantic. To explain the literal

meaning and non-literal meaning, it will explain use paragraph according to the

types of figurative expression found in song lyrics. The example and the

explanation of figurative expression types also found the figurative meanings, as

follows:

1. Personification

This figurative expression is a unique feature of metaphor, making an

analogy of inanimate objects act and talk like humans (Gory Keraf theory in the

book entitled diction and style 2001. Pp 140). The song lyrics consist of

Personification, as follows:

a. Song title : My heart will go on

Lyric : My heart will go on

Literal meaning: Part of body

Non-literal meaning: Soulmate

This first personification is found in the “My heart will go on” song in the

eleventh line of the verse. This lyric means the part of the body, which will always

be together like a soulmate. Actually “heart” cannot be separated from human

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 41: AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN CELINE DION’S

26

because it is very important in human body, but in this lyric, the word “heart” was

described as a person who is very special and important in our life.

b. Song title : Because you loved me

The first symbolism is found in “Beauty and the Beast” song in the tenth

line of the verse. That lyrics considered with symbolism because the writer

symbolize both of them the beauty and the beast. It means that word “beauty” is the

same thing with another thing. A simile is an announced comparison. Similes

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

The object of this study is the figurative expression found in the five love

song lyrics of Celine Dion, which the researcher chose. The selected songs are "My

heart will go on," "Beauty and the Beast," "Falling into you," "Because you loved

me," "That's the way it is." Her songs contain figurative expressions to make the

lyrics have a more profound meaning. The songs are usually targeted at teenagers

in love because her songs are always about love with someone. The lyrics are

always rich in figurative expression that is very expressive. All song is about telling

a love story, in other words, all song from Celine Dion always make feel enjoy

when to hear the song. A little bit of explanation about each song the researcher

chooses: the first song, "My Heart will Go on," is used as the theme song in the

Titanic movie in 1997. This song is very famous in the past and now because the

history is very touched. The second song is "Because you loved me, " which creates

the lover or the close relationship. The third song is "That's the way it is," is the

song for someone who has had several bad experiences of love is losing hope in a

relationship. The song's writer shares her experience as she portrays someone

famous in that situation. The fourth song is "Beauty and the Beast," which is the

Disney Movie Beauty and the beast that tells about someone who has a bad attitude

cursed by the witch and found a very loving girl; however, the face has a deficiency.

The last song is "Falling into You," is indicated by some lyrics, such as, it feels so

good to fall into you. This song uses imagery because this song expresses the song

using tactile imagery where the sense can describe by the feel.

Interpretation figurative expressions compared the expressions in language

and analyse the importance of expression itself. Semantic can relate to the figurative

expression because the figurative expression has many meanings (Patrick Griffiths,

2006). The researcher will be analysis five pieces of data from Celine Dion's song.

The important step is to read the song lyrics according to the selected song after

reading and then analyze the figurative expression. In the selection of data, the

researcher chooses five-song, especially love song from Celine Dion, which are

"My heart will go on," "Beauty and the Beast," "Falling into you" "Because you

loved me," "That's the way it is." The first research questions are based on figurative

expression, which explains the meaning of the figurative expression according to

the song lyrics from those songs. The researcher managed to apply semantic

theories, such as literal meaning and non-literal meaning. Literal language is using

words according to the meaning of denotation, which is accepted conventionally.

Literal language can show the denotation meaning of the figurative expression.

Figurative language (non-literal) is using the word that has meaning inside the word.

Figurative language usually expresses and shows the feeling, often created by

presenting words to be equated, compared, or associated with typically unrelated

meanings. To analyze the meaning, the researcher uses the semantic feature,

especially connotative meaning, because it refers to over and purely concern with

the accurate word expression (Leech, 1981). The results of the study reveal that

Celine Dion often uses imagery, metaphor, hyperbole, and simile to describe her

feelings by the song. The meaning of these lyrics often uses affective meaning. It

means that song by Celine Dion is always communicative and can stimulate the

listeners’ emotions to express their feelings.

APPENDICES

APPENDIX 1

My heart will go on

Every night in my dreams

I see you, I feel you

That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance

And spaces between us

You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are

I believe that the heart does go on

Once more, you open the door

And you're here in my heart

And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time

And last for a lifetime

And never let go 'til we're gone

Love was when I loved you

One true time I'd hold to

In my life, we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are

I believe that the heart does go on (why does the heart go on?)

Once more, you open the door

And you're here in my heart

And my heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear

And I know that my heart will go on

We'll stay forever this way

You are safe in my heart and

My heart will go on and on

APPENDIX 2

Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as time

True as it can be

Barely even friends

Then somebody bends

Unexpectedly

Just a little change

Small to say the least

Both a little scared

Neither one prepared

Beauty and the Beast

Ever just the same

Ever a surprise

Ever as before

Ever just as sure

As the sun will rise

Ever just the same

Ever a surprise

Ever as before

Ever just as sure

As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time

Tune as old as song

Bitter-sweet and strange

Finding you can change

Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun

(Certain as the sun)

Rising in the east

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme

Beauty and the Beast

Falling into You

And in your eyes I see ribbons of color

I see us inside of each other

I feel my unconscious merge with yours

And I hear a voice say, "What's his is hers"

I'm falling into you (Falling into you)

This dream could come true

And it feels so good (Falling into you)

Falling into you

I was afraid (I was afraid)

To let you in here

Now I have learned

Love can't be made in fear

The walls begin to tumble down

And I can't even see the ground

I'm falling into you (Falling into you)

This dream could come true

And it feels so good (Falling into you)

Falling into you

Falling like a leaf

Falling like a star

Finding a belief

Falling where you are

Catch me, don't let me drop

Love me, don't ever stop

So close your eyes

And let me kiss you

And while you sleep

I will miss you

Oh, I'm falling into you (Falling into you)

This dream could come true

And it feels so good (Falling into you)

Falling into you

Falling like a leaf

Falling like a star, oh-oh

You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when i was weak

You were my voice when i couldn't speak

You were my eyes when i couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when i couldn't reach

You gave me faith 'coz you believed

I'm everything i am

Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly

You touched my hand i could touch the sky

I lost my faith, you gave it back to me

You said no star was out of reach

You stood by me and i stood tall

I had your love i had it all

I'm grateful for each day you gave me

Maybe i don't know that much

But i know this much is true

I was blessed because i was loved by you

You were my strength when i was weak

You were my voice when i couldn't speak

You were my eyes when i couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when i couldn't reach

You gave me faith 'coz you believed

I'm everything i am

Because you loved me

You were always there for me

The tender wind that carried me

A light in the dark shining your love into my life

You've been my inspiration

Through the lies you were the truth

My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when i was weak

You were my voice when i couldn't speak

You were my eyes when i couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when i couldn't reach

That the way it is

I can read your mind and I know your story

I see what you're going through yeah

It's an uphill climb, and I'm feeling sorry

But I know it will come to you yeah

Don't surrender 'cause you can win

In this thing called love

When you want it the most there's no easy way out

When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt

Don't give up on your faith

Love comes to those who believe it

And that's the way it is

When you question me for a simple answer

I don't know what to say, no

But it's plain to see, if you stick together

You're gonna find a way, yeah

So don't surrender 'cause you can win

In this thing called love

When you want it the most there's no easy way out

When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt

Don't give up on your faith

Love comes to those who believe it

And that's the way it is

(That's the way it is)

When life is empty with no tomorrow

And loneliness starts to call

Baby, don't worry, forget your sorrow

'Cause love's gonna conquer it all, all

When you want it the most there's no easy way out

When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt

Don't give up on your faith

Love comes to those who believe it

Ohhhhh
