    Obamas Speech 7e;t

/. Two h)ndred and twenty one years a-o, in a hall that still stands across the street, a

    -ro)p of %en -athered and, with these si%ple words, la)nched A%erica:s i%probablee;peri%ent in de%ocracy.

    2. "ar%ers and scholars< states%en and patriots who had tra4eled across an ocean to

escape tyranny and persec)tionfinally %ade real their declaration of independence at

a Philadelphia con4ention that lasted thro)-h the sprin- of /989.

    . The doc)%ent they prod)ced was e4ent)ally si-ned b)t )lti%ately )nfinished.

    =. +t was stained by this nation:s ori-inal sin of sla4ery, a >)estion that di4ided the

colonies and bro)-ht the con4ention to a stale%ate)ntil the fo)nders chose to allow

the sla4e trade to contin)e for at least twenty %ore years, and to lea4e any final

    resol)tion to f)t)re -enerations.

    6. f co)rse, the answer to the sla4ery >)estion was already e%bedded within o)r

    1onstit)tion ? a 1onstit)tion that had at is 4ery core the ideal of e>)al citi@enship

)nder the law< a 1onstit)tion thatpro%ised its people liberty, and )stice, and a )nion

    that co)ld be and sho)ld beperfected o4er ti%e.

    9. hat wo)ld be needed were A%ericans in s)ccessi4e -enerations who were willin- to

do their part ? thro)-hprotests and str)--le, on the streets and in the co)rts, thro)-h a

ci4il war and ci4il disobedienceand always at -reat ris* ? to narrow that -ap between

the pro%ise of o)r ideals and the reality of their ti%e.

    8. This was one of the tas*s we set forth at the be-innin- of this ca%pai-n ? to contin)e

    2. As s)ch, (e4erend ri-ht:s co%%ents were not only wron- b)t di4isi4e, di4isi4e at a

    ti%e when we need )nity< racially char-ed at a ti%e when we need to co%e to-ether

    8. Most wor*in-? and %iddle?class white A%ericans don:t feel that they ha4e been

    partic)larly pri4ile-ed by their race.

$. They are an;io)s abo)t their f)t)res, and feel their drea%s slippin- away< in an era of

    92. &)st as blac* an-er often pro4ed co)nterprod)cti4e, so ha4e these white resent%entsdistracted attention fro% the real c)lprits of the %iddle class s>)ee@e ? a corporate

    %is-)ided or e4en racist, witho)t reco-ni@in- they are -ro)nded in le-iti%ate

concerns ? this too widens the racial di4ide, and bloc*s the path to )nderstandin-.

    9=. 1ontrary to the clai%s of so%e of %y critics, blac* and white, + ha4e ne4er been so

    naG4e as to belie4e that we can -et beyond o)r racial di4isions in a sin-le electioncycle, or with a sin-le candidacy ? partic)larly a candidacy as i%perfect as %y own.

    96. B)t + ha4e asserted a fir% con4iction ? a con4iction rooted in %y faith in od and %y

faith in the A%erican people ? that wor*in- to-ether we can %o4e beyond so%e of
