A quick introduction - The following presentation is in response to the reflection exercise in week seven, of COMM11003 Communication in professional contexts. I chose this speech as it was one that I had recently prepared for a wedding in which I was the maid of honour. Whilst this speech was not prepared for a presentation of a professional context, I was able to adopt concepts and elements from within the text Communicating in the 21st century(Eunson 2012), in order to help me improve the quality and overall performance of my speech. The speech was a roaring success (to my proud amazement) and I have since been told that I should prepare speeches as a profession for weddings! This encouragement did make me consider the speech from a professional aspect, and I thus realised it would be a perfect opportunity for me to consider using it for this reflection exercise. An account of how to plan for an oral presentationCostigan (2014) argues that planning is a vital role in any form of communication. This process involves three easy steps. Text, participants and context. In regard to the previous presentation, the text needed to be in the form of a polite and formal nature, and a written paper would be required, comprised of an introduction, body and a conclusion. Eunson (2012) supports the idea of using these three segments in any oral communication in order to best send a message. The participants would be the speaker (myself), and the audience would be 150 guests at the wedding. The context would be in a very formal venue, addressing an audience there to celebrate a marriage. After these three steps have been considered, I had to delve further into some important details. Costigan (2014) asserts that the following points should all be part of the planning process. Who is my audience? A guest list of 150 people would be attending the wedding reception.What is my environment? A very large ball room, with many tables spread across the room in its entirety. What environment do I need? Due to being the maid of honour, I would be located at the front of the venue, and therefore will be in prime location for viewing. What resources are available? Due to the audience being in a well catered restaurant, any food or drink requirements are easily obtained.What resources do I need? I need a microphone to enable all guests to hear me clearly.What can I expect? I can expect my audience to want a laugh! The speeches can be one of the most entertaining parts of a wedding!(please click space bar to view the next slide)Do I need to conduct research? I learnt that the other presenters would be the brides uncle and mother. I would be the last presentation. The brides father passed away when she was very young, and she knew her mother and uncle would make speeches that would cause quite an upsetting mood. The bride asked me to make my speech a little more light-hearted. as she did not want a sad mood to continue into the remainder of the evening. Some other very important questions (Archee, Gurney & Mohan 2013, cited in Costigan 2014, pp. 2-3) in which I found invaluable to my speech preparation are as follows: Who is the audience? There would be no children, and a room full of people that I already know. How much does the audience already know about the topic? In this scenario, I had known the bride for over 20 years. I knew the family and extended family very well, and thus I was very comfortable that my speech would be accepted, with no risk of offending anyone, should I follow two solemn speeches with a light-hearted one. What are their attitudes to me as a person? Due to being well known to the guests, I am accepted as the brides sister, and a little bit of a clown. What do they hope to gain from my presentation? Due to my clown persona, and the order in which the bride has placed the presenters (wanting a funny speech at the end), the audience will be expecting my speech to be funny. I have made similar speeches at all of the brides milestone events, and this would be no exception! (please click space bar to view the next slide)

To conclude this brief account, I can appreciate that planning, in particular an oral presentation, is of vital importance. Due to my checklists, I was able to deliver the funny, light-hearted speech that I was asked to. My research helped me to determine what the other speakers would cover, and therefore allow me to not go over already covered ground. Moreover, I could concentrate on things that I knew the audience would appreciate, without fear of misunderstanding. I also noticed that my nerves were under control, as I was very aware of who my audience was, what my role was, and what they would be expecting of me. I stood and delivered the presentation knowing that the audience would accept my speech with open arms, and it was a raging success!!Thank you again for your time.
