MONA FOMA is an event like no other, staged in a state like no other.
Tasmania’s natural wilderness, rich history, culture, produce and people are unique, and MONA FOMA is an excellent way to sample a slice of what we have to offer.
Since it was first held in 2009, MONA FOMA has set a new benchmark for Tasmanian festivals and events. It has brought a number of high-calibre artists and performers to our shores, and served as a major drawcard for mainland and international visitors.
This year’s event will no doubt build on the outstanding success of previous years, with an impressive line-up of performances. I’m pleased a number of acts will be held in regional areas and I know locals are looking forward to welcoming performers and audiences to their communities.
MONA FOMA is indicative of the quirk, innovation, passion and ingenuity that Tasmania is increasingly renowned for and the Liberal Government is proud to support this year’s event. I congratulate David Walsh, Brian Ritchie and the entire MONA FOMA crew for their hard work and dedication to staging such a wonderful cultural event.
WILL HODGMANPREMIER
We are seven years into this experiment called MOFO and one might think that the fabled Seven Year Itch might be setting in. Especially with our fecund reproductive tendency spawning eleven festivals within that time span, counting MOFO-siblings Dark Mofo and Synaesthesia attwo each. That's eleven chaotic rug rats running around pulling each other’s hair, poking each other in the eyes and making one hell of a noise.
And yet: our love for artists, audiencesand each other has created a splendid Garden of Eden ambience that sprouts annually around mid-January with the predictable precision of a Swiss watch. The results, however, are never predictable.
MOFO 2015 will have gigantic music-stuffed inflatable temporary architecture (we predict the hot air and gaseous emissions in the immediate vicinity will keep that structure, if not airborne, at least filled nearly to bursting point), a maritime musical invasion of our sacred harbour to rival D-Day (hopefully this will not scare off the whales which have recently returned after nearly a century’s absence), four days of intensely creative light and sound in a gentrified car park, interactive pinball gamelan, a Scandinavian pipe organ chanteuse, hammer-wielding Chinese, a Glad-Wrapped art gallery, a quartet of sleep depriving nocturnal bacchanals at Faux Mo, cleansing morning meditations, as well as temporary and permanent art installations at MONA and the festival precinct. Plus, a market, food, wine, beer and – hopefully – YOU!
BRIAN RITCHIECURATOR
I know it looks pretty smoothout there. It isn't. Everything MOFO seems to run like clockwork. A well-oiled machine. Nothing couldbe further from the truth. Tensions multiply and stresses divide. Our festivals have grown up beforewe have. Putting them on twice a year is driving everyone to therapy, or drink, or church. That's your fault, for turning up so regularly, and expecting shit hot entertainment. I hope you’re satisfied.
One day we'll be satisfied too. I'm sure you will all go somewhere else that day. Perhaps to therapy,or to church.

ARCHITECTSOF AIR (UK) EXXOPOLISOPENS WEDNESDAY JAN 1411AM-8PM
Exxopolis is a luminarium – a large-scale inflatable sculpture of light and colour, somewhere between a cathedral and a spaceship, or a womb and a mosque. People are invited to wander through its tunnels and caverns, as the colours intensify with the natural lightof the sun. Exploration of Exxopolisis up to you – wander beneath its radiant red tree, marvel at the cupola and its ‘windows’, or kick back zen-style in a glowing pod for a moment of mid-festival calm.
Exxopolis also features a special MOFO-commissioned musical composition by Jim Moginie, exploring the connections between music and colour. Jim and his guitar-toting mates(see them perform at PW1)will appear for random live performances within the luminarium as well.

JIM MOGINIE’S ELECTRIC GUITAR ORCHESTRAPERFORM THE COLOUR WHEEL
You know Jim already from his days with iconic Aussie rockers Midnight Oil. These days he’s stepping out in numerous guises, including frequent performances with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and as a member of surf rock outfit The Break (with MOFO godfather, Brian Ritchie). Jim’s here with his Electric Guitar Orchestra to explore the connections between music and colour, via the art, music and theories of Kandinsky, Klee, Schoenberg and de Maistre.
Jim’s Electric Guitar Orchestra includes Kent Steedman (The Celibate Rifles), Michael Trifunovic (Aqualash), Tim Kevin (Youth Group, La Huva, The Exiles), Alex Young (Good Buddha) and Matthew Steffen (Decoder Ring).
P.S. If you’re lucky, you might see Jim’s pop-up performances inside Exxopolis.
The Colour Wheel was written with the assistance of Campbelltown City Council through Campbelltown Arts Centre’s 2014 Contemporary Music Program where Moginie was the 2014 artist in residence.

Roper River sweeps through the Northern Territory, from Mataranka to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Along the way, it passes the remote town of Ngukurr and in the wet season, the Roper engulfs all but Ngukurr’s highest land. As the waters recede, a natural land bridge appears – the Roper Bar – allowing people to cross to the town.
Crossing Roper Bar is an ongoing collaboration between the Australian Art Orchestra and Young Wagilak Group of South East Arnhem Land, celebrating country, ceremony and the reconciliatory possibilities of music. Led by world-renowned music man Paul Grabowsky AO, the project blends the musical heritage of Australia’s first folk with contemporary composition and improvisation.

He’s interested in interrogating the artistic production process, and in ideas of spectacle and the absurd – clearly. Can’t wait tosee him cut sick on those hammers. NEIL GAIMAN (UK)
THE SLEEPER AND THE SPINDLE
SATURDAY JAN 17
This saxophonist, composer and New York underground music scene celeb will perform his score to a screening of The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a 1926 silent silhouette animation directed by the legendary Lotte Reineger. Phillip will be joined on stage by James Greening (trombone), Alister Spence (keyboard) and Casey Golden (keyboard). Bring the kiddly-winks.
SATURDAY JAN 17, 11AM & 2PMTHEATRE ROYALFREE
Neil’s no stranger to our map of Tassie, and that’s the way we like it. For the first time ever, he’ll read his new book, The Sleeper and the Spindle, with accompanying music by Jherek Bischoff and illustrations by Chris Riddell. Think Sleeping Beauty meets Snow White, with a hearty dollop of dark magic thrown in for good measure.

Wrong, Yo Gabba. Eating friends is in. Led by MONA’s inimitable First Lady Kirsha Kaechele and her posse of wondrous winged monkeys, the market’s fourth outing is all about engendering loving relationships with the friendly critters and plants on our plates (i.e. find out where they grew up, go to second base, etc.). So, as you revel in the glorious sun-drenched agora (aka the MONA lawns), quaff delicious rainbow unicorn urine cocktails and get up close and personal with your lunch – sourced from a tasty-as selection of pop-up chow and bevvy vendors – before doing battle in a cultural dance-off (ballroom vs. break, ballet vs. krump), kicking back as your little monsters run amok at the MoMa Minors Tent (they’re teaming up with Terrapin Puppet Theatre this year) or letting your groove thang loose to MoMa’s weekly musical marvels, programmed by everyone’s favourite hirsute demigod, Brian Ritchie. Feel dem summer feels!
Oh, and there’ll be a casino. A chicken casino (yep). Don’t tell the Federal Group. Or the government.
But wait; there’s more! The River Derwent Heavy Metals Project is back with a vengeance, resolute in its ecowarrior mission to cleanse the river of its nasty metallic pollutants. With KK and co at the helm, this ongoing, nerdy art-science collaboration continues with an eclectic assortment of artworks, performances and the like, and our first market of the year will kick things off in bizarre and beguiling style.

Don’t, don’t, don’t bite your friends.– YO GABBA GABBA
HEAVY METAL OYSTER PONTOON (MADA/MONA)
The pontoon’s virgin sailing, complete with a mass duet of humans and oysters, and followed by an invitational prude swim across the Derwent (‘invitational’, as in ‘not for the faint of heart’; ‘prude’, as in ‘hide your budgie smugglers beneath full Victorian dress or evening wear’).
SATURDAY JAN 17, 1PMMONA OLD JETTY
HEAVY METAL WATERWORKS – PRESSURE
Experimental architect Matthew Bird (Studiobird) and choreographic artist Phillip Adams (BalletLab) will symbolically excise heavy metals from the river via a playful water-based performance, featuringinflatable objects, local swimmers and esotericaquatic behaviour.

PATAÑJALI
We’re dead chuffed that Michael has become somewhat of a MOFO fixture. Virtuoso, composer and prolific interpreter of contemporary piano, MKH will deliver the world premiere of his latest composition. It’s a celebration of Yoga-Sutra, an ancient Sanskrit treatise written by Patañjali on the yogic understanding of mind and consciousness.
A series of asanas (yoga postures) will be performed live by Hobart writer and yoga practitioner Arjun von Caemmerer, accompanied by an instrumental trio reflecting on the past and future of these yoga principles. Along with MKH, the trio includes Eugene Ughetti (Speak Percussion’s artistic director) and Arabella Teniswood-Harvey (multi-instrumentalist, musical educator and art historian).

SWARM & MURMURATION
Atticus, a Melbourne artist, wants you to bring your smartphone to the festival – not just to snap another hot selfie (although we do strongly encourage that), but to take part in an interactive sound artwork. Swarm & Murmuration invites punters to download and access a special component of the MOFO app, turning their smartphone into an instrument of sorts. The app allows people to ‘play’ a selection of six static tones, collectively filling the space with a beating and changeable swarm of sound, led by Atticus himself.

JAMES TURRELL
James Turrell harnesses the numinous potential of light and space; kind of like what God would do if He had a degree in architecture. Needless to say we are tremendously excited about our new MONA Skyspace, which we see as an elevation of the museum’s hitherto subterranean ponderings of the human condition. If that sounds vague, that’s because Turrell’s art must be seen to be believed; or, perhaps, not seen, but believed nonetheless.
