“Bilingualism is essentialfor those who wish toexperience and enjoy

everything Canada hasto offer. A knowledge

of both languages extends one’s horizons to everycorner of our country.”

Dr. Wilbert Keon, World-renowned heart surgeon, Director of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute

French Immersion students learn the same curriculum as that of students enrolled in an English program. Only the language of instruction is different. As French Immersion students progress through their elementary school years, English is gradually introduced into their program. The proficiency of both French Immersion and English stream students in English language arts is the same by the end of elementary school, although a lag may occur in the early years. The Greater Essex County District School Board also offers Immersion and Extended French programs at the secondary level. The following table outlines the framework for the French Im-mersion K–12 Program:

One of the most important factors in this program is the role of the parents. If a parent is positive and encouraging, then the child will sense his/her parent’s commitment. This is a key ingredient for success. It is helpful for parents to read to their chil-dren in their first language. As well, parents should encourage their children to read and write in their first language. Research shows that knowledge learned in a first language can be transferred to a second language. For a parent who wishes to supplement the home library with French books and CDs, the school staff hosts book fairs during the year. Also, children can purchase materials from book clubs available through the schools.

The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) is proud to offer parents and students

the opportunity to enrol in an Early French Immersion Program. French Immersion is a type of schooling in which students receive all or most of their instruction in French from a teacher who speaks French fluently. Designed specifically for children whose first language is not French, this program enables children to become functionally bilingual. Students can begin the Early French Immersion Program in Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, or in Grade 1. Students can even continue the program in high school where they can fulfil diploma requirements in French.

“Knowing both languages has opened many doors for me; doors to opportunityand doors of the mind. There’s an interestingand exciting world out there, waiting for thosewho are ready to reach.”

Marc Garneau,Canada’s first astronaut

English and French are both partof the cultural fabric of our country.

Today, with availabletechnology, informationflows farther and fasteracross the globe. Theability to communicateand understand other
