The seed
As stated by the International Council of Nurses (2007) “ (…) nursing research is needed to
generate new knowledge and advance nursing science, evaluate existing practice and services,
and provide evidence that will inform nursing education, practice, research and management.
Research is directed toward understanding the fundamental mechanisms that affect the ability
of individuals, families and communities to maintain or enhance optimum function and
minimise the negative effects of illness. Nursing research should also be directed toward the
outcomes of nursing interventions, so as to assure the quality and cost effectiveness of nursing
care. Nursing research also encourages knowledge of policies and systems that effectively and
efficiently deliver nursing care; awareness of the profession and its historical development;
understanding of ethical guidelines for the delivery of the nursing services; and, knowledge of systems that effectively prepare nurses to fulfil the profession's current and future social
mandate.”
Nursing Graduate Education throughout Europe must be able to answer these challenges and
participate in the common development of research knowledge and research skills in nurses.
The Oslo “Works in Progress” seminar provided a very successful opportunity to bring together
students and professors from four different countries, each presenting different experiences in
nurse education, nurse care and nurse research but still sharing the same wish to develop
nursing as a science and as a profession able to answer our European population health needs.
The seminar in Oslo was experienced as a unique opportunity to embrace the challenge of
building a common understanding about nursing on our continent. The answer to a common
nursing practice starts with a common vision of nurse pre graduate and postgraduate
education, and bases its roots in an ongoing European nurse research development. This is
why we proposed a second edition of “Works in Progress” seminar at Escola Superior de Saúde
do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria.
During a three day seminar, students and professors from Oslo University College, Trinity
College and Escola Superior de Saúde do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria discussed thirteen (13)
research projects in nursing sciences or in interdisciplinary studies. This report aims to help all
participants to reflect about all the work done so far, and to build future forms of cooperation.
We welcome you to read this proposed common reflection…

4. Evaluation
Academic staff and students had the opportunity to evaluate the seminar. Students worked
together on this process using a SWOT analysis basis, without the presence of the academic
staff, and presented the results of their reflection to thel academic staff at the end of the
seminar. Academic staff (Teachers and administrators) had a meeting in another room to share
and discuss opinions and proposals for the near future.

How to look forward:
1) Further developments in the areas of research and education;
2) Use Bologna process principles to develop common academic and research work;
3) Introduce some other dimensions like future research joint studies (part of an
academic course or a total European Course - Erasmus Mundus master in a shortterm);
4) Develop Academic staff joint supervision of students;
5) Define research priorities – developing collaborative research in common subjects;
6) Develop different perspectives of research;
7) Teachers from different institutions could come to other institutions and teach;
8) Develop academic courses in English – we should work more…
For the next WIP seminar
1) Streamline the presentation structures;
2) Include students from the first year and also students with their completed studies;
3)
Will the next WIP happen in Dublin? Ireland would like to host the seminar (WIP – 3
rd
edition) next year but they can not commit to that yet; more students should join us;
4) Include paediatrics and midwifery subjects.
Short term goals
1) Design a template: Fintan and Liz will start the template (Suzanne will work on it).
2) Erasmus master – plan for funding (2 years) strip away the labels and call it anything…
3) Keep the contact warm until next meeting;
4) Propose teachers to get Erasmus grants in order to understand better other practices
and experiences;
5) Important to present to our colleagues that we have an experience that can go many
ways;
6) José Carlos will write a WIP report and send it to all partners.
Challenges
1) Financial and organizational challenges;
2) Define a common academic module;
3) Importance of a European master collaboration: how to do this well;
4) Common doctoral programs;
5) Built a multilingual program.
