Visitas 2016

Saturday, April 16 – Monday, April 18

An Invitation to Visit Harvard

Congratulations again on your acceptance to Harvard! We are excited to welcome you to our April celebration for newly admitted students. We hope you will take this opportunity to meet current undergraduates and faculty, attend classes, tour campus, and explore Cambridge and Boston.

This is a chance for you to try Harvard on for size. While we have planned many events to help you see the College, this weekend will be representative of a typical weekend at Harvard. You are welcome to attend any or all parts of the program, and you will have an array of other activities from which to choose during your time here. We want you to experience College life as it really is: dynamic, busy, diverse, and full of exciting opportunities.

The full schedule of events for this year (including a selection of College programs and meetings, social events, and lectures) will be posted online and given to you upon your arrival. We are happy to offer accommodations with a current undergraduate on Saturday and Sunday nights. As the program is designed specifically for students, please be aware that events throughout the weekend will be student-focused.

IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND Visitas, please register online on your applicant status portal. It is very important that you fill out the registration materials completely, even if you are arranging your own accommodations. If you would like us to arrange housing for you, it is also important that you provide, as closely as possible, your arrival and departure times so that your student host knows when to be available to meet you. While you will be housed by a current undergraduate, we encourage you to venture out on your own to take advantage of the weekend’s offerings and especially to meet your fellow admitted students.

IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND Visitas, we welcome you to visit the College some other time in April. Please give our office at least one week of notice so that we may accommodate you.

If you need more information about Harvard, do not hesitate to be in touch. Students and Admissions Officers will be happy to answer your questions by phone, mail, or email.

We look forward to seeing you in Cambridge in April!

Sincerely,

Visitas 2016

Visitas 2016: What to Expect, Harvard Class of 2020 Please register online at your applicant status portal as soon as possible, but no later than April 6 at 5:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please email our office directly at [email protected].

When you arrive, please come directly to the Admissions Visitor Center in Agassiz House, Radcliffe Yard. (See directions on the last page or refer to map.) You will receive a registration packet including updated program information, student host information, and a special University ID upon arrival. You must register at the Admissions Visitor Center even if you have arranged your own accommodations so you can be contacted in case of emergency.

The Admissions Visitor Center will be open 24 hours until the program closes at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18 in case an emergency should arise. Please show your ID card at the door to be admitted after business hours. Please come by or call (617) 495-1551 if we can be helpful in any way.

Please note that this is only a partial list of what you can expect. A more comprehensive, official schedule will be given to you at registration with complete information and locations for all events.

Highlights of Visitas 2016Explore Harvard academics

• Listen to Harvard professors talk about some of their big ideas at “Visitas Thinks Big,” a student-created discussion on topics ranging from democracy to dimensions of the universe.

• Attend an Academic Department Open House, such as the Astronomy and Astrophysics Open House where you can chat with professors and use the solar telescopes in the Science Center.

• Visit one of our many General Education courses offered in the spring on topics as diverse as historiography and electromagnetism.

• Learn about the Advising Programs Office and meet some of the members of your future advising team, including Academic Advisers, Peer Advising Fellows, Resident Tutors and Directors of Undergraduate Studies.

See life outside of the classroom

• Watch current undergraduates perform at the Pre-Frosh Palooza, a night of cultural entertainment featuring a cappella, ethnic dance, instrumental music and much, much more.

• Come hear a lively debate between the Harvard Democrats and the Harvard Republican Club.

• Take a tour of Farkas Hall, a six-story building containing 25,119 square feet of space including a state-of-the-art, 272-seat theater, a scenic shop, a prop shop, an electrical shop, and a dance studio.

• Stop by the extracurricular activities fair to meet representatives from over 100 of the 450+ student organizations on campus.

• Go for an early morning jog with the Harvard College Marathon Challenge and see the campus from all angles.

Get a taste of Yard and House life

• Spend the weekend living in an undergraduate dorm such as Massachusetts Hall, the oldest surviving building at Harvard and the former home of George Washington’s troops during the American Revolution.

• Check out one of our twelve residential Houses and learn why 95 percent of Harvard undergraduates think their House is the best House.

• Eat in Annenberg or one of the House dining halls and enjoy our unlimited meal plan—have your fill of anything from the salad bar to Carnival cookies.

Meet your new classmates

• Enjoy the chance to meet other members of the Class of 2020 who were admitted from your home state or country.

• Have fun exploring the restaurants and stores of Harvard Square with your new friends.

Contact Information It will be difficult for parents to reach their sons or daughters by dorm room telephone, as the students will rarely be in their hosts’ rooms. In case of an emergency, during the weekend, parents may call the Admissions Office at (617) 495-1551 or the Harvard Police at (617) 495-1212.

PackingBring a bath towel and don’t forget your sleeping bag! All students must provide some form of photo identification in order to register.

We have not planned any events requiring formal clothes, so plan to wear whatever is most comfortable. Cambridge weather is unpredictable—be sure to check the weekend forecast.

Meals During the weekend, meals will be provided on Saturday, Sunday, and through lunch on Monday. The only money needed will be for travel (cab, subway, parking, etc.) or any souvenir shopping you might like to do.

Students are welcomed for meals at Harvard Hillel. Please indicate online your preference for eating Kosher meals at Hillel.

Harvard Community We are eager to welcome you as a full and participating member of our community. Like current students, you must assume your share of responsibility for community safety and welfare. The legal drinking age in Massachusetts is 21 and the use of illicit drugs is a violation of University rules, as well as state and federal laws. By doing your part to observe the rules of common sense and courtesy, you can help everyone to relax and enjoy a taste of life at Harvard.

Directions The Admissions Visitor Center is located in Agassiz House, in Radcliffe Yard, a three-minute walk from Harvard Square. The above map details the campus. Harvard can be reached:

From Boston Logan Airport

By Taxi: 20 minutes, $40-50 By Subway: 40 minutes, free from Logan Airport

2. Take the Red Line inbound toward Alewife to Harvard (six stops).

From Railroad and Bus Terminals (South Station)

By Subway: $2.65

Take the Red Line inbound toward Alewife from South Station to Harvard (six stops).

Driving

From I-90 Eastbound (Massachusetts Turnpike), take the Cambridge/Allston exit (no. 18). From I-90 Westbound, take the Cambridge/Allston exit (no. 20). Follow the signs to Cambridge. Go straight, crossing the River Street Bridge. Turn left at the light (upon crossing the bridge) onto Memorial Drive. At the third light, turn right onto John F. Kennedy Street. Go through two sets of lights. At the third set of lights, turn left onto Brattle Street, then bear right at the crosswalk, which is a continuation of Brattle Street. Radcliffe Yard and the Admissions Office are on your right.
