Robert Darnton Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor, Emeritus

Robert Darnton was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1960) and Oxford University (B.Phil., 1962; D. Phil., 1964), where he was a Rhodes Scholar. After a brief stint as a reporter for The New York Times, he became a junior fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He taught at Princeton from 1968 until 2007, when he became Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library at Harvard. Among his many honors are a MacArthur Prize Fellowship, a National Book Critics Circle Award, election to the French Legion of Honor, the National Humanities Medal

conferred by President Obama in February 2012, and the Del Duca World Prize in the Humanities awarded by the Institut de France in 2013.

He has written and edited many books, including The Business of Enlightenment: A Publishing History of the Encyclopédie (1979), The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984, translated into 18 languages), Berlin Journal, 1989-1990, (1991, an account of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of East Germany), and The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Prerevolutionary France (1995, a study of the underground book trade). His latest books are The Case for Books (2009), The Devil in the Holy Water, or The Art of Slander in France from Louis XIV to Napoleon (2009), and Poetry and the Police: Communication Networks in Eighteenth-Century Paris (2010).

During this program, Robert Darnton will lecture on history and literature from the eighteenth to the twentieth century,“The Deep South of Europe,” and will cover general themes such as: How Italy Was Unified; Failed Revolutions; An Unending Ancient Régime; The Two Sicilies—Naples vs. Palermo; and literary themes clustered around The Leopard and Christ Stopped at Eboli.

TOUR COST INCLUSIONS Seven nights cabin accommodations aboard Sea Cloud II; all meals during the cruise (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, R=Reception, D=Dinner); wine with lunches and dinners; complimentary open bar throughout the cruise, in addition to soft drinks, water, and coffee. Escorted sightseeing by private motorcoach; entrance fees for included visits; airport / pier group transfers and porterage; customary shipboard gratuities; taxes; service charges; gratuities to guides and drivers; $200,000 emergency medical assistance and evacuation insurance.

TOUR COST EXCLUSIONS International airfare; passport fees; meals not specified; personal items and expenses; airport transfers for those not on suggested flights; excess baggage; trip insurance; optional prelude in Valletta, Malta; any other items not specifically mentioned as included.

OPTIONAL PRELUDE IN VALLETTA $1,395 per person (double occupancy). Single supplement $355. Includes two nights accommodations at the Phoenicia Hotel, Valletta; breakfast daily, TBA lunch and TBA dinner and one reception; excursions as per itinerary.

RESERVATIONS, DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENT To reserve your space on this program, a $1,000 deposit is required per person. Please call us at 800-422-1636 or 617-496-0806, or fill out and mail or fax the registration form. Reservations are acknowledged in order of receipt until the maximum enrollment has been reached. Your final payment is due 120 days before departure.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds

are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.

HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: Sea Cloud II does not have an elevator.

CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge.

INSURANCE We highly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. An application for insurance will be provided by HAA Travels upon confirmation.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds

are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.

HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: Sea Cloud II does not have an elevator.

TOUR COST INCLUSIONS Seven nights cabin accommodations aboard Sea Cloud II; all meals during the cruise (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, R=Reception, D=Dinner); wine with lunches and dinners; complimentary open bar throughout the cruise, in addition to soft drinks, water, and coffee. Escorted sightseeing by private motorcoach; entrance fees for included visits; airport / pier group transfers and porterage; customary shipboard gratuities; taxes; service charges; gratuities to guides and drivers; $200,000 emergency medical assistance and evacuation insurance.

TOUR COST EXCLUSIONS International airfare; passport fees; meals not specified; personal items and expenses; airport transfers for those not on suggested flights; excess baggage; trip insurance; optional prelude in Valletta, Malta; any other items not specifically mentioned as included.

OPTIONAL PRELUDE IN VALLETTA $1,395 per person (double occupancy). Single supplement $355. Includes two nights accommodations at the Phoenicia Hotel, Valletta; breakfast daily, TBA lunch and TBA dinner and one reception; excursions as per itinerary.

RESERVATIONS, DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENT To reserve your space on this program, a $1,000 deposit is required per person. Your final payment is due 120 days before departure.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds

are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.

HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: Sea Cloud II does not have an elevator.

CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge.

TRAPANI / SEGESTAExplore Segesta’s splendid Doric temple, strangely unfinished, whose columns are said to produce organ-like tones on windy days. Later you may visit either the hilltop medieval town of Erice, whose Norman castle sits atop the ruins of a temple of Venus, or Mazara del Vallo. The latter’s highlight is its 2,400-year-old, seven-foot bronze statue Dancing Satyr, rescued from the sea by fishermen in 1998.

PALERMOSicily’s capital was the envy of Europe under the Normans, whose enlightened rule produced the golden mosaics in the 12th-century Palatine Chapel. At the Regional Gallery, view the chilling fresco, The Triumph of Death and admire the mosaics in the Norman cathedral in nearby Monreale. Enjoy a special reception at the Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed.

Spend two nights in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the medieval walled city of Mdina, Malta’s old capital. In quaint Rabat, explore the newly re-opened Wignacourt Museum which has a labyrinth of Hypogea, art galleries, and relics from the Knights of Malta. Also, see the Domus Romana, a first-century B.C. Roman house with exquisite mosaics. Discover the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim, one of the oldest freestanding temples in the world. At St. John’s Co-Cathedral, view Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, and see tapestries and armor at the Palace of the Grand Masters. A highlight will be a private reception at a 16th-century palazzo. Accommodations are at the landmark Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta’s historic center.

TRAPANI / SEGESTAExplore Segesta’s splendid Doric temple, strangely unfinished, whose columns are said to produce organ-like tones on windy days. Later you may visit either the hilltop medieval town of Erice, whose Norman castle sits atop the ruins of a temple of Venus, or Mazara del Vallo. The latter’s highlight is its 2,400-year-old, seven-foot bronze statue Dancing Satyr, rescued from the sea by fishermen in 1998.

Enjoy a special reception at the Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed.

Roman house with exquisite mosaics. Discover the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim, one of the oldest freestanding temples in the world. Robert Darnton Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor, Emeritus

Robert Darnton was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1960) and Oxford University (B.Phil., 1962; D. Phil., 1964), where he was a Rhodes Scholar. After a brief stint as a reporter for The New York Times, he became a junior fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He taught at Princeton from 1968 until 2007, when he became Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library at Harvard. Among his many honors are a MacArthur Prize Fellowship, a National Book Critics Circle Award, election to the French Legion of Honor, the National Humanities Medal

conferred by President Obama in February 2012, and the Del Duca World Prize in the Humanities awarded by the Institut de France in 2013.

He has written and edited many books, including The Business of Enlightenment: A Publishing History of the Encyclopédie (1979), The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984, translated into 18 languages), Berlin Journal, 1989-1990, (1991, an account of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of East Germany), and The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Prerevolutionary France (1995, a study of the underground book trade). His latest books are The Case for Books (2009), The Devil in the Holy Water, or The Art of Slander in France from Louis XIV to Napoleon (2009), and Poetry and the Police: Communication Networks in Eighteenth-Century Paris (2010).

During this program, Robert Darnton will lecture on history and literature from the eighteenth to the twentieth century,“The Deep South of Europe,” and will cover general themes such as: How Italy Was Unified; Failed Revolutions; An Unending Ancient Régime; The Two Sicilies—Naples vs. Palermo; and literary themes clustered around The Leopard and Christ Stopped at Eboli.
