c o m m o n c a t h e d r a lThanks You

2014 was a year filled with blessings, growth and prayer. We worshipped every week on the Common, created at common art, hosted youth at CityReach, and were present on the streets of Boston as well as through

chaplaincy at the Barbara McInnis House.

This annual report is coming together in the aftermath of a record winter. Many feet of snow, with record cold temperatures, crippled the city. Coupled with the abrupt closure of the Long Island Shelter and recovery facilities, our already vulnerable community has struggled mightily. Everyone is tired and ready for good news.

We are so thankful that YOU are our good news!

Every Sunday, rain or snow, clouds or sun we gather on the Boston Common for fellowship and worship. You, our extended community (including 46 groups in 2014), brought the food and the love. This ministry is not possible without you. You provide fellowship – and what is often our community’s first meal of the day. You bring the good news.

common art gathered weekly, bringing people together to create beauty in community. Volunteers supported us every time we met. 16 art shows were hosted by congregations and other groups. Our artists sold their work, represented their work and

grew community. One artist said, “I came for the art and stayed for the love”. This is good news!

In 2014, 39 churches and youth groups participated in CityReach, bringing warm clothing, blankets, food, and other winter essentials. You kept our community warm even as our community taught you about homelessness in Boston. One of our CityReach staff said, “CityReach is important because I have an important story to tell – one which I hope they will share with others”. This is good news.

Your time, prayers, participation and financial support make our community possible. Your help allows us to be present, to build community, and to sustain this congregation of unhoused individuals – and their friends -- in Boston.

We hope you know how much we appreciate all that you do. You, your churches, your foundations and your schools have made a difference in the lives of many. common cathedral is not just “The Outdoor Church on the Boston Common”. We are also present with you in your home churches as you worship. We are always praying with (and for) you throughout the year.

In closing thank you for your consistent support – your commitment to our shared mission – and for welcoming me so warmly into this wonderful community of faith.

“J” moved two benches closer during Sunday worship. He still claims that he’s not coming for church, but he stays through the whole worship service and listens to every word.

common artists made puppets, and 10 of us marched with them, at the First Night parade on New Years’ Eve in Boston.

We stood in solidarity with religious leaders and community members during a public prayer service that voiced our concerns about the closure of Long Island, which housed the largest shelter -- and many recovery beds -- in Boston.

We purchased and distributed hundreds of ponchos for the community to use on rainy days.

We prayed. We prayed in large groups on the Common, we prayed individually on park benches, we prayed with parishioners over the phone and by text message.

2014 also marked the passing of several beloved members of the congregation.

We keep Donnie, Bryan, Peter, Theresa, Garret and all those who loved them – in our prayers.

And -- we laughed -- a lot! Even when things were hard, we found moments of joy.
