MAY 9, 2018 Volume 22, Issue 5

Summer Schedule begins May 20 - PentecostTwo Services held at 8:30 am & 10:00 am

Both services in the Church.

The bible is filled with amazing and miraculous stories. Some of the stories even sound so far-fetched that they push our exploration of faith to its extreme. One such story that stretches the edges of faith is as far-fetched sounding, paranormally, as even the most creative of comic book stories. It is the story of the first Pentecost and the arrival of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit.

The story, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, describes an incredible scene for the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The author describes this grand entrance as deafening, like the sound of a violent wind, rushing down from heaven, blasting through the entire house, yet not a whisper of air was moved by the tumultuous sound. Each stunned apostle was marked with an image of fire, dancing upon their heads, like fragmented, licking tongues. And then it was over, the Holy Spirit filled them with a Holy wisdom, and an ability to speak in new languages, and even gave them courage to leave their hiding place to carry out Jesus’ Mission to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the Earth.

It’s an amazing story. Many see in this story the action of God, reversing the harsh punishment of separation given in the Genesis account of the Tower of Babel. Through the New Covenant of Jesus’ teaching and through the power of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, God is no longer separating people, but attempting to draw them back together. The barrier of language and culture for those who believe was removed, as the newly gifted apostles spoke to the world in the native languages of all who could hear and the Church spread far and wide.

Whether or not you believe the story is true, or simply a metaphor, that answer is left entirely in the realm of your individual faith walk. But no matter your belief of truth or fiction, the point is clear; that what Jesus had to say about God, which is the Good News, was more important than anything else on our planet and worth risking everything to make sure the message got out.

God presents us all with opportunities every day to share love and kindness with others. Be open to the possibility that someone has been placed in your path, not to aggravate or burden you, but rather that you might share the love of Christ with them. Be open to the possibility that God is acting through you.

Here at St. James, we may not have the same abilities of those faithful first followers of Jesus, but the Spirit still resides with us and beckons us to spread the Good News. Our giftedness from God is quite different, but all the same amazing and powerful. You see mutually we have buildings and grounds of an incredible, majestic beauty which provide an opportunity for us to bear witness to the love of Christ each and every time we welcome someone new with a smi le, a handshake, a friendly conversation and even an invitation to return. You can volunteer to support the ministry here in this holy place, and you can give generously to help grow and maintain the beautiful space God has loaned us for a while. The non-biblical proverb is to ‘bloom where you are planted’, but I ask instead that you will help me till the soil, plant the seeds and gently nurture others along so that many, many more may know Christ and bloom here as well.

SUMMER PROGRAMS St. James is bringing you

year-round Christian Formation on Sunday mornings for

children, youth and adults! Beginning June 10

following the 10 am service

Christian Formation for children and youth will take a break on Sunday, May 13 until June 10, when summer programming begins.

Rising 4k- 6th graders, will have rotation stations focusing on Matthew 4:19 "Come, follow me." For seven weeks, the classes will use art, science, games, service, storytelling and even cooking to learn that Jesus calls ordinary people just like us in the midst of their everyday life to follow him.

Rising 7th-12th graders will be using the curriculum Teen Text to guide discussions of the weekly lectionary. The guide helps youth connect the text on the page with events in their daily lives. Through a series of open-ended, text-related questions, youth begin to see the Bible as a vital, dynamic relevant resource–one that can inform them throughout their lives.

New Adult Offering: The Rev. Dr. Mary Jayne Ledgerwood will be leading Theological Conversations in the Chapel. No homework, no preparation- just open conversation to explore, understand and deepen our relationship with God. You are not required to commit to all classes. Each week a new

topic will be discussed. Join in as you are able.

For ADULTS on Sunday Mornings: • Study of a book of the Bible

(TBA), led by Evelyn Garrett, in the Vestry Room

• Lectionary Study, led by Jim Daniell, in the Library

• Theological Conversations with The Rev. Dr. Mary Jayne Ledgerwood, in the Chapel

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a seminar class through Sewanee that offers participants the opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian ministry. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God's kingdom. The entire EfM course is 4 years, but you do not have to commit to all four years at once!

If you are interested in joining an established EfM group that meets on Wednesday evenings at St. Paul’s, Daphne, please contact Ellen Huckabay at 251-232-0598 or [email protected]. Classes begin the week after Labor Day and meet through mid-May.

WAMBSWednesday Morning Bible Study

Bad Girls of the Bible, and What Can We Learn from Them by Liz Curtis Higgs will by the subject of the next 8-week session of the Wednesday Morning Bible Study beginning May 23. A former bad girl herself, Liz uses a unique way of looking at notorious women of the Bible. She categorizes them as, Bad for a Moment, (Lot’s wife and Michal); Bad for a Season, but not Forever, (Woman at the Well, and Rahab); and Bad to the Bone, (Potiphar’s wife, Delilah, and Jezebel). Higgs blends Bible commentary and contemporary fiction to bring the Bad Girls to life and teach a unique blend of Bible study. Each chapter is self contained and is accompanied by a video.

Books are available at Lifeway Christian Bookstore and online.

WAMBS meets in the vestry room at 9:00 for fellowship and get serious about studying from 9:30 to 11:00. Contact Elaine Pannell 251-990-4579 for any questions or to sign up. All are welcome to join the group. Feel free to bring a friend.

I really enjoyed the Confirmation Classes because I learned the meaning behind so many things we hear in our church services. It was special because I learned how to get closer to God and I enjoyed learning how to do that with my friends by my side.  I had the best mentor

experience because I had the best mentor, Pel Henry.  I was able to share with him some of the things that I question and he made it a comfortable and fun experience for me. Mac Gaillard

A N C H O R L I N E S

Just over a year ago our rector introduced to this parish the ministry Community of Hope International (COHI), an organization dedicated to training laypeople to be pastoral caregivers. Since then 11 of our parishioners answered the call to this min i s t ry. They a l l have been e x t e n s i v e l y t r a i n e d , t h e n commissioned to help provide pastoral care within our midst.

St. James parishioners who have completed the training are Susan Bridges, Katchie Cane, Nancy Dennis, Elaine Estefan, Ann Fargason, Bebe Goetter, Bill Goetter, Scott Gonzalez, Beth Moore, Susan Paris, Kenneth White-Spunner, and Fonda Wilson. Their ministry includes visiting those in the hospital and residential care facilities, as well as those who have

mobility challenges leaving their homes. The COHI team regularly visits our parishioners who cannot attend services, which helps them stay connected within our St. James family. COHI visitors offer encouragement and support in a nonjudgmental listening presence. Through shared time of prayers, hope, and blessing, the visits become visible reminders that they are remembered and loved.

Community of Hope is grounded in the hallmarks of the Benedictine Rule balance, humility and hospitality. By learning Benedictine spirituality, our COHI trained parishioners change how they approach all of their relationships, including with families and friends. The training consists of 14 modules, each taking between two to three hours to complete. Community of Hope

training provides that opportunity, changing our relationships with God, ourselves, our family, and those in need of our services.

Our eleven Community of Hope Lay Pastoral Caregivers gather monthly for Circle of Care meetings. In the Benedictine tradition, the gatherings are times of prayer in which they share their experiences from a spiritual perspective and the joys of caregiving, as well as seek help with any challenges they may be experiencing as caregivers. They are currently planning a retreat in June. Also on the horizon is a reception to invite other parishioners to join them on this sacred journey. If you are interested, please contact any Community of Hope lay leader.

More Ways to Become Involved at St. James…

What is Community of Hope International?

Welcome Ministry Want to be involved? Don’t want to attend meetings?  Want to have fun?  Don’t want another job?  Want to meet people?  It is easy…. Sign-up for the Welcome Ministry!Call Nancy Dennis, at 928-8218 for more information on how you can make a big difference in welcoming our visitors.

Foreign Language Readers Needed If you are interested in reading the lesson (Acts 2:1-21) in a foreign language on Pentecost, Sunday, May 20 at either the 8:30 or 10 am service, please contact the Parish office at 251-928-2912.

Sunday School Teachers Summer Sunday School teachers are needed for all ages. Volunteer for one day or all summer. We are flexible. For more information or to volunteer, contact Anne McEniry at 251-928-2912 or [email protected].

Nursery Volunteers The St. James nursery is in need of volunteers to greet moms and dads and new families in the nursery before the 9 and the 11 am services. The greeters will welcome the new families and help all families navigate the

nursery. They are needed for the 20 minutes before each service begins and may join the congregation when the service starts. We are also looking for nursery employees and adult volunteers this summer and next year.  Please contact Anne McEniry at 928-2912 or [email protected] if you would like to be a nursery employee or volunteer.

Outreach Work Day at the ROTARY YOUTH CLUB

The St. James Outreach Committee will have a work day at the Fairhope Rotary Youth Club on Saturday, May 19, at 8 a.m. We'll be transforming one corner of their gym into a "game room," where older kids can go as a reward for things like finishing their homework.

Randy Sternenberg is generously coordinating the construction. He expects we'll be able to complete the project by around noon as long as we have at least four or five volunteers. If you'd like to join us for this chance to help a fantastic local organization, please contact Bernie Dorrough at [email protected]. Experience with basic home-improvement projects is helpful but definitely not a requirement. We hope to see you there!

Calling All Cooks! Would you like to coordinate the kitchen or help cook for a Summer Wednesday Evening Program? Contact Anne McEniry at 251-928-2912 or [email protected].
