The song from the musical‘Cabaret’ tells us that ‘moneymakes the world go round’.While this may be true of theunregenerate world, it certainlyisn’t true of God’s Church. Whatmake God’s Church ‘go round’are the volunteers who turn upweek in–week out, reliably doingGod’s work.

I am always amazed at theloyalty shown by those whovolunteer for the choir, or toserve, or to read, or to greet orusher, or to set up – or to teachour kids. To say ‘thank you’doesn’t do what you do justice. Iam in awe of your commitmentto ministry at St. Clement’s, andgive thanks constantly.

And then there are those whocommit to working out in God’sworld – volunteering at thingslike Trinity Café, or FeedingAmerica. Or they volunteer inHospice Thrift Stores, or atMetropolitan Ministries, or theyknit and crochet for prematurebabies or the homeless. Onceagain, I’ve barely scratched thesurface of what people at St.C’sdo – but you are taking Jesusseriously by seeing Him inothers.

And then there is the Vestry …this year we seemed to havebeen energized by all that ourvolunteers do. We are takingnew approaches, adding to ourresponsibilities, and making surethat we get each memberinvolved in the ‘how’ and the‘what’ of St.C’s. These areexciting times!

As if to amplify this excitement, Ican tell you that we now have 77of the 100 ‘Tokens’ we need forour 2020 Vision Budget. This iswonderful news! Yes, we needjust 23 more ‘Token’ Pledges –something I’m sure we canachieve. Perhaps there are someof you who have yet to pledge,or who may be able to give alittle more? If so, please letMargeaux know.

I love the energy our youngstersbring into the church. I don’tmind the noise they can bring inbecause it is innocent. Theyknow nothing different than tobe themselves in church – longgone is the time when we had tosuffer in silence!

I also love the questions I getasked – sometimes at oddmoments (like when I’m giving achild Communion!) All I can sayis that our youth leaders aredoing a great job teaching ouryoungsters the fundamentals ofthe Faith – for which we shouldall be grateful!

Notice I say a ‘great’ job. Not‘good’ or ‘average’, but GREAT.

After all, we are all called notonly to greatness, but to servegreatly. For Jesus didn’t call itthe ‘Great Commission’ fornothing; nor did He speak ofanything less than love as beingthe greatest Commandment – soit is for us to do all things to thehighest level we can, trusting inGod to help us achieve all Hecalls us to do.

Which reminds me: as thecenter of our communal life isfocused on our worship, itmakes sense that we shouldwant to invite people to shareour worship with us. To this endI will be setting a date for you allto ‘Invite Your One’ – a friend, neighbor, relative, even acomplete stranger – to join usfor worship and fellowship.

Research tells us that 3 out of 4people would attend a churchService if they were invited. I willbe giving you the tools to do justthat.

In the meantime, I hope that youwill join in all that Lent at St.C’shas to offer – the Lent Group, the worship, the WednesdayBible Study, even the Fish FryFridays – all leading us towardsthat most holy time from PalmSunday to the Great Vigil, whenwe get to walk alongside Jesusduring His last week and thencelebrate His resurrection.

God is Great!

Fr. Andrew.

As the storm raged, the captain realized his ship wassinking fast. He called out, "Anyone here know howto pray?"

One man stepped forward. "Aye, Captain, I know howto pray."

"Good," said the captain, "you pray while the rest ofus put on our life jackets - we're one short."

My Dearest Peeps! As it is now Deepest Lent, I ex-tend – as a canine courtesy –my willingness to consumethose things which you havechosen to forsake during thisfasting season. Barring, ofcourse, the forbidden choco-late.May I suggest that, becauseyou are not eating certain foodstuffs, you put the moneyyou’ll not be spending to gooduse and think about your loyalwriter: me. Imagine how yourpurchases will enhance mycogitations, further adding toyour enlightenment.Need I say “win – win”??? Ineed not!No need to thank me – I do thiswith a servant heart.(ed: Do you thinkthat will work,Winston?)

Do I think ‘what’ will work, pat-ty-cake head?(ed: Your attempt to beguileyour readers into giving youstuff.)I’m a canine – we live by themotto ‘hope springs eternal’;after all, if you don’t try – you’llnever find out, will you?(ed: Let me know how you geton.)Oh, you’ll know! You know, despite the almostconstant white noise Fr. Dadproduces, he can sometimessay something that gets methinking.I mean, it’s true, isn’t it, thatunless you try something, you’llnever find out what can hap-pen?And, yes, I know there are lim-

its – and there are, let’ssays, ‘experiences’

you’d try onlyonce. Walkingthrough brambles,

anyone? Gettingyour nose stuck in a

yogurt pot, peeps?Falling off a bed becauseyou just had to scratchthat unscratchable

itch?But … whatwould I have

discovered if I’d been success-ful? I can tell you, peeps: a bur-ied bone (I reckon thebrambles were well cut backwhen it was buried); thecreamy delight of cultured milk(I don’t like uncouth milk); andthat itch … scratched …blisssssssss …Some of you peeps, though, don’t seem to want to trymuch at all – and I just don’tknow why. Is it the fear offear? Is it the fear of having toput an effort in something? Oris it the fear of failing?Canon Fadda Dad used to havethe fear of preaching – itscared him mightily! And, yes, I totally agree: if onlythat fear were still with him,we’d all be better off! But … heonly preached because it was apart of his calling, and he haskept on doing it (ad infinitum, some might say) to the pointthat preaching doesn’t worryhim any more. But that isn’t to say the fearhas gone – oh no, peeps. He’dbe the first to tell you that itstill takes a lot out of him topreach, but …So … what’s the thing you finduncomfortable? What’s thething you say to yourself ‘I’dlove to try that’ only to add the

Page 7: Anchor March 2020 - St Clement's Episcopal Church · kept on doing it (ad infinitum, some might say) to the point that preaching doesn’t worry him any more. But that isn’t to

word ‘but’ at the end. Howmany ‘buts’ have stopped youdoing things – even things forGod?Now, at this point – me beingthe Biblically Literate® Dobie-dog I am – my mind automati-cally turns to St. Paul’s state-ment in his letter to the peepsin Philippi – chapter 4 verse13, since you ask – where hesays “I can do all thingsthrough him who strengthensme”.

But this verse has been usedso badly, resulting in greatdisappointment for many –and for why, peeps? Becauseit is pulled out of context. Justto prove a point, here’s an ex-ample.The song ‘I believe I can fly’.No you can’t – well, you can’tunless it’s a bird that’s singingit. Or you’re a peep in a`plane. You see, there are limits towhat Paul’s saying here. Im-prisoned, chained to a guard,Paul knows he can seethrough any amount of dis-grace, poverty, want, and fear– because Jesus is with him.

Which nicely leads me to thego-to Bible verse I would use:“perfect love casts out fear”.This is a portion from the 18thverse of the fourth chapter ofthe first letter of St. John. Thewhole verse is this: “There isno fear in love, but perfectlove casts out fear; for fearhas to do with punishment, and whoever fears has notreached perfection in love.”When it comes to the thingscanines fear, there’s not a lot

on the list. But then ‘life’happens, we get badkeepers, we experiencenegative things – andthen all of a sudden wehave canines who hate

peeps, or hate other canines;canines who fear being leftalone; canines who areafraid of loud noises; ca-nines who have beenbeaten up and who fear araised hand – even ifraised to give a kind bellyrub. We learn fear – and so doyou. But there’s more for youpeeps: you don’t like beingseen as ridiculous; you like tobe liked; you fear rejection.Well, I hate to tell you, but ifany of those things stopsyou from living your Chris-tian life, then you’ve yet to

learn to love properly. Rejec-tion is kinda built in to being aChristian (Luke 10:16); andbeing a ‘fool for Christ’ is tobe seen as an attribute (1 Cor4:10).So, what is it you’ve wantedto do for God, but fear hasheld you back? Whatever it is,God will strengthen you, andyour fellow churchy peeps willhave your back. Don’t give up– don’t give in; the only thingworse than trying and failingis never trying at all.Keepin’ it Real,Winston.Companion to all Who Try.

It’s true, isn’t it, that you try something,

you’ll never find out whatcan happen?

ST. CLEMENT’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Building a Diverse Christian Community

Do You See What I See…Do you hear what I hear? Indeed as a part of yourvestry I pondered what to write in this quick article

then it came to me like that stomach churn after visiting those fried food vendors on the fairmidway… Communications, that’s what I’d write about.I pen an article for our internal employee / family newsletter at work and funny enough my lastone had to deal with communications as well (are you seeing a recurring theme here?). Thosethat know me may chuckle and yes even shudder a bit when those weekly emails arrive in yourbox, or I approach, all in the name of communications. It occurred to me as I volunteered (or was that some persistent arm twisting by Kit?) to take oncommunications here at St Clement’s, that we do have a widely diverse parish. Each memberreceives, processes, and digests communications differently (how many of you read the dailypaper, vs. looking at it on a tablet?). So in order to speak both internally and perhaps even moreimportability externally (to share what a good thing we have at St Clements) the approach, message, and way it is delivered had to be tailored to those who would be receiving. This was notan overnight process or simply throwing a switch. No, it would be a long and lengthy slog thatwould take us many different twists and turn. The more often we visited that well, the deeper itseemed to get. Was this in fact a bottomless pit?Although this communications process can always be better, I am happy to say that St Clement’shas made some nice progress over the past several years. We are reaching more people external-ly through FaceBook, LinkedIn, Nextdoor, and Google, as well as on-property signage – we aregetting our (I should say His) message/ word out.Printed publications, like the bulletin and monthly Anchor newsletter, are now posted electroni-cally as well as emailed to each parish member (if you are not receiving please let me know) asan enhanced communications effort. Sermons are regularly posted on the website, as are currentevents, as we work hard to keep this first-look portal fresh and up to date (check out theupcoming Vestry section where you will be able to view a picture and quick bio for each Vestrymember). Indeed we are communicating, but there is still more to come as we are just scratchingthe surface. So now, here’s you part (you knew there was a catch). As the vestry member asked to work oncommunications, I would like each parishioner to take part(thank you to Mike, David and James for their ongoing work) insharing weekly emails with friends or family, commenting andsharing on FaceBook, NextDoor, LinkedIn, or Google to helpgrow St Clement’s and His footprint.Come on, you can do it – Do you See What I See?Jay Burkette

São Paulo Mercy Ministry

In his latest e-mail, Fr. Stephenwrites about yet another tragedywhich happened to one of theyoung homeless people, Israel.Fr. Stephen asks us to keep thisyoung man in our thoughts andprayers.

Dear Praying Friends,

Something tragic happened earlythis week. A young man, Israel, tried to take his life. At least, thisis what it appeared to be. Thank-fully, he did not sustain lifethreatening injuries.

I wrote about him a long timeago. You can find a link to the oldposting on this latest update. Then we once celebrated his 18birthday in the streets.

Strangely, we met one of the old-er girls who was at the birthdaycelebration this week by chance. She talked about how special itwas for her to have the celebra-tion in the streets. Eventually wefound out that she did not knowwhat had happened to Israel re-cently.

It is strange how God is bringingall the people connected to this

young man together. Please readand share your comments.

Please be praying for Israel. It isnot easy to visit a homeless per-son in the hospital. I can do itoutside the visiting hours be-cause I have a religious pass. However, I needed to get all hispersonal information like hisbirthday date, mother's nameetc. before I could see him.

After getting all this information ,I still wasn't allowed to visit withhim because he was waiting in

Thinking in new ways?Your Vestry at workYour Vestry met on February 25th following the ShroveTuesday Pancake Supper. The primary focus of the meet-ing was to look at how vestry responsibilities were han-

dled in the past and how we might better address our future. Under theguidance of Fr. Andrew we began to rethink commissions and who might bebest suited to dealing with the various areas of parish life.

The new areas appear as:● Worship and Christian Formation● Inreach and Outreach● Communication● Finances and Fundraising● Building Maintenance and Improvements
