The Sun Newspaper Billboard

Simple design layout- doesn’t distract the audience’s attention away from the main purpose of the billboard which is to advertise The Sun newspaper.

The billboard uses no images- however the slogan works in replacement of this as it is used to catch the audience’s attention.

Large/Bold text stands out off the billboard and captures attention. Uses a Sans-serif font which is plain but effective as it doesn’t detract the audience’s attention away from the message of the slogan.

The colour red is associated with The Sun newspaper as it makes up the masthead. This is effective as it stands out against everything else immediately identifying the newspaper that is being advertised.

Having the masthead text in white and the rest of the text in black works effectively as it makes the masthead stand out from the rest of the text.

The catchy tag line used is an effective advertising technique.

Simple and consistent house style, keeps to the point.

The Guardian Newspaper Billboard

The billboard consists of a simple white background however the main design is made up of brightly coloured arrows that are all linked together.

The arrows symbolise the wide range of news that is covered in The Guardian newspaper. The way the arrows are all linked but spiral off in different directions is effective as it shows the newspaper is detailed and informative.

The bright colours used are effective as they draw attention the billboard and make it stand out from the wall.

Tag line/ Slogan for the newspaper

The billboard uses The Guttenberg Design Principle as the masthead is in the primary optical area, making the audience immediately aware of what newspaper is being advertised.

Advertises the newspaper’s website as well as the newspaper itself

The use of having the title of the newspaper in a different colour, and in a serif font, makes it stand out from the rest of the design.

Eye-catching design

The Times Newspaper Billboard

The billboard uses a large image to advertise The Times newspaper.

The image used is of ballet dancers, one of which is reading a newspaper. This is effective as it suggests to the audience that reading The Times newspaper should be incorporated into every day routine.

The image used could also suggest the audience type that The Times is targeting. For example, ballet dancing is more associated with those from a higher class status, rather than middle class. So the use of this image could suggest that the newspaper is aimed at people of a higher status due to the informative style in which the news is given.

Very simplistic design layout and a consistent house style Uses subdued colours such as navy blue and pale pink instead of bright colours

The image of the ballet dancers being the main focal point of the billboard is also a good advertising technique as it could capture people’s attention that may not read a newspaper but may love ballet dancing. This could then persuade them into buying/reading The Times.

The Masthead and tag line seem quite small in proportion to the billboard but still stand out through the use of a different colour and serif font.
