If you’re hungry for more then it’s also the perfect platform to progress onto our Industry Excellence Academy for Theatrical and Media Make-up or even onto degree level study with our higher education partner UCEN Manchester.

Let’s begin…

STUDY PROGRAMMEYou’ll join our Centre of Excellence when you enrol on any of our courses – whether you’re studying at Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.

You will need a minimum of a Grade 4 GCSE in English or Maths – but don’t worry if you haven’t achieved this. We will support you to attain this qualification by additional study alongside your course at the Centre of Excellence.

EMPLOYABILITYWe believe that it’s important for you to get a feel for what your future may look like, to explore the opportunities our courses can lead to and understand the true potential of your career path. To do this you will be benefit from the following activities:

WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTGaining hands-on experience in a ‘real-time’ professional, commercial environment is hugely valuable. You’ll get the chance to spend at least 35 hours working within a local, prominent, business such as a salon, studio, make-up store or on shoots and events, where you’ll assist with day-to-day tasks and shadow staff as you continue to learn and develop your work-related skills, confidence and broaden your knowledge.

INDUSTRY PLACEMENTOffering the opportunity of more than 315 hours of in-depth learning and hands on experience from a leading industry employer, many of our students have been lucky enough to grasp the chance to learn from the best and some have gone on to secure a role within the organisation. You too may have the opportunity to apply for an Industry Placement where you can expand your talent, explore career paths and enhance your employability through this additional experience whilst growing your own industry network and contacts. We are keen to support you and will set you up with an Industry Placement Mentor and provide financial help for travel and meals.

EMPLOYABILITY SESSIONSWe want you to thrive in the workplace not just survive. Working with your Employability Tutor you will take part in dedicated ‘employability’ sessions ensuring you are well equipped with the skills, knowledge and personal development to enter and enjoy the working world.

WORK RELATED ACTIVITYExperience is priceless and we encourage this to be varied and challenging to help expand your understanding of the industry and enhance your employability by taking part in activities such as:

• Work with our Creative and Digital Media and Performing Arts department supporting with Hair and Beauty on working sets and productions.

• Enter regional and national Hair and Beauty competitions

• Attend Pampering and Make-up events and sessions

• Take part in Hair and Beauty masterclasses delivered by leading brands

• Listen to guest speakers from the industry

HAIR AND BEAUTY SKILLS16-18 | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN | 8 WEEKS

The perfect introduction, ideal if you are looking for an initial insight into working in the Hair and Beauty industry. You will learn about assisting in a salon, working as part of a team whilst building your confidence in readiness for your next steps, in which you’ll be fully supported whether it’s further learning or preparing for employment.

LEVEL 1

HAIRDRESSING WITH ESOL19+ | HARPURHEY | 14 WEEKS

A highly practical course, this Level 1 Diploma will provide you with a hands-on introduction to a wide range of hairdressing skills. It will give you an understanding of relevant techniques, introduce you to the tools of your trade and start to build your confidence and creativity as you lay the foundations for further study.

LEVEL 1

HAIR AND BEAUTY SKILLS19+ | NORTHENDEN | 14 WEEKS

Welcome to the world of Hair and Beauty. Level 1 introduces you to the industry and focuses on several core areas such as the beauty of make-up and nail art application, basic manicure and pedicure treatments and plaiting and twisting hair. You will learn about the importance of professional image and our Studio of Hairdressing and Beauty will give you the opportunity to learn and perform salon reception duties.

BARBERING16-18 | ADULT | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN 19 - 22 WEEKS

Barbering is booming. And this course is an excellent first block to building your future profession. Technically you’ll focus on basic barbering and men’s grooming skills and personally you will develop your confidence and communication skills. You’ll get a chance to put to those new skills to the test by assisting in a Barber Shop.

LEVEL 2

BEAUTY THERAPY16 -18 | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

This Level 2 Technical Diploma is the ideal for anyone with a passion for all things beauty and a desire to learn more about the skills and techniques you’ll need to be successful in this ever-growing environment. You’ll focus on a range of different beauty therapy treatments, understand their benefits and how you can enhance a client’s physical appearance through practical application on all areas of the body.

LEVEL 2

HAIRDRESSING19+ | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

This technical qualification is creative, challenging, fun and very practical, perfect if you’re passionate about hair in a world where styles are constantly changing. You will be encouraged to explore your inner artist as we work with you to achieve the skills, techniques and knowledge required to work in this stylish profession.

LEVEL 2

NAIL TECHNOLOGY16-18/19+ | HARPURHEY/NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

Take the first step to a career in nail artistry and nail treatments with our Level 2 qualification. On this course you’ll develop the skills you need to perform manicures, pedicures and nail enhancements using acrylic. Learn all about the physiology of hands and feed, customer service and the health and safety requirements of the industry before progressing into the industry or onto further study. 9

BARBERING19+ | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

Recognised by the UK’s leading professional authority in the industry, The British Barbering Association (BBA), this Level 2 qualification will inspire you to be part of the barbering culture. Practically you will focus on developing your cutting skills, which you will learn in real, working environments. You will also develop your office skills giving you the option to explore employed or self-employed freelance barbering opportunities.

LEVEL 3

BEAUTY THERAPY16-18 | HARPURHEY | NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

The Level 3 Technical Diploma is ideal for those of you who already have a good understanding of beauty therapy. This course gives you the platform to elevate your skills to the next level by working with you to advance your knowledge and expertise with a range of specialist beauty techniques. You’ll get to further explore the products and equipment used in a modern beauty salon and spa, whilst continuing to develop an essential understanding of how to care for clients and meet and uphold the Industry Health and Safety standards. The perfect technical qualification to take you to next level of your creative journey. It will harness your talent and love for the profession as it further advances your skills and specialisms, giving you the cutting edge. Practically you’ll develop your advanced cutting, styling and colouring techniques, alongside an enhanced understanding of current products and technologies, health and safety, client consultation and customer care. All imperative tools to create a successful future in this innovative industry.

BARBERING16-18 / 19+ | NORTHENDEN | ONE YEAR

Ensure you’re a cut above the rest with our Level 3 Barbering course. Gain all of the skills you’ll need to work in a barber shop or as a self-employed barber including customer consultation, creative barbering techniques, shaving services and design. If you’re serious about a career in barbering then this is the qualification for you.

If you’re dreaming of owning and running your own salon and you’ve completed a Level 3 qualification or have relevant experience, then our Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management is the next step to achieving that dream. You’ll learn exactly what it takes to become a successful salon manager by developing your management skills and technical abilities. You’ll also learn about how to ensure effective health, safety and security in the salon and how to keep excellent client care at the forefront of your business.

LEVEL 4

MICROBLADINGNORTHENDEN | 19+ | 12 WEEKS

If you’re a trained or practicing beauty therapist, this course will enhance your skills and allow you to learn and practice eyebrow shaping and microblading techniques on clients as you work to become a specialist in this area. You’ll cover important theory including anatomy and physiology for microblading techniques, health and safety, as well as training in client care and consultation.

SALON MANAGERAs a salon manager, you would oversee daily salon operations, delivering a well presented, organised and well-staffed salon that adheres to current health and safety guidelines with an emphasis on client satisfaction. You will hire and supervise stylists and therapists and work with the team to promote and market the salons services to grow the client base and maximise profit. This is an exciting role for those wanting to challenge their creative and business skills.

AVERAGE SALARY - £25,000

NAIL TECHNICIANA successful nail technician is a skilled individual who focuses on improving the appearance and condition of the nails and skin on people’s hands and feet. Establishing an understanding of the client’s nail care needs and preferences, this role requires creativity and skill as you perform treatments, shaping and polishing procedures to create beautiful, healthy nails.

AVERAGE SALARY - £20,000

BEAUTY THERAPISTBeauty therapists learn a huge range of techniques and treatments for the face and body giving them the opportunity to work with clients to help them feel beautiful both inside and out. You’ll need to be a people person with excellent communication skills and a keen eye for beauty trends and detail along with a desire to provide a quality service, every visit.

ELIZABETH PETERSASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Liz Peters has 30 years’ experience in the Service Industries. Having trained as a beauty therapist at City College Manchester, her career has covered salon therapy, salon ownership, teaching and managing in both further and higher education programmes ranging from her own subject to Hospitality and Catering, Sport Therapies and creative programmes.

Liz is passionate about improving the lives and the employability skills of students in Greater Manchester.

CATHRYN LYONHEAD OF DEPARTMENT - NORTHENDEN

Cathryn possesses over 30 years of experience in the Beauty Therapy industry having worked both nationally and internationally as a college lecturer and manager.

Though her initial specialism lies in Beauty Therapy, she has delivered the Level 4 Skin Rejuvenation and Hair Removal qualifications after her time as a National Trainer for a leading equipment supplier.

JENNY BRATHWAITEHAIR AND BEAUTY THERAPY TUTOR

Jenny has been in the hairdressing profession for over 30 years and has lots of experience to share with students. From working in salon’s in Manchester to teaching for up to 10 years.

Jenny teaches VTCT level 2 and 3 Practical and Theoretical Hairdressing skills and City and Guilds Level 3 Hairdressing, Including African type hair and hair extensions.

LAURA PARKINSONHEAD OF DEPARTMENT - HARPURHEY

Laura is head of department for Hair, Beauty and Retail. Laura has 14 years education experience at The Manchester College and has written for national awarding bodies within the Hair, Beauty and Retail industry.

Laura’s drive for designing an innovative curriculum that supports learner progression in their chosen career routes means she regularly links with employers and industry experts to meet the latest industry needs and give learners real life work experience opportunities.

JOANNE ROBINSONHAIR AND BEAUTY THERAPY TUTOR

Joanne has been a qualified Beauty Therapist for 26 Years, and has taught at the Manchester College for 16 Years, teaching on the Level 1 and Level 3 Beauty Therapy courses.

Her career has taken her all the way to Australia where she worked as a Salon Manager and specialised in massage therapy.

With a wealth of experience across the Hair and Beauty industry, our team are perfectly placed to support and guide you to a successful career.

You’ll learn from their experiences running and owning their own salons as well as working with some of the leading brands in the industry.

Passionate about teaching the next generation of Hair and Beauty professionals, they are constantly ensuring their knowledge and skills are up-to-date by continuing to work in industry and by attending skills sessions from well-known salons and brands.
