BIO’SWENDY DJANGWendy is a member of the BMDCA and the BRBMDC. She is an aspiring draft judge who only recently came to Bernese Mountain Dogs in 2009 with her first BMD named Churchill. Wendy quickly developed a passion for the sport, even though Churchill was less than thrilled at his new job. Through the training and many trails, with both failures and moments of brilliance, both Wendy and Churchill went on to pass NDD, ANDD, DD and BNDD. Although Churchill is mostly a reluctant partner, Wendy learned to channel what’s positive, and work toward accomplishing their goals with workshops, positive training and mentors that know how to guide their efforts. Wendy has helped many Bernese Mountain Dog friends get started in casual settings of training and is ready to help others start the journey that she now continues with all three of her boys. Churchill still is a happy brace partner for Brew and the new up and coming draft dog, Favor, is already learning the ropes in a slow, steady, and positive manner.

Dr. BARBARA EVESDr. Barbara Eves, part of a military family, spent much of her childhood in Europe. After graduating from high school in Germany, she earned a BS degree from Pennsylvania State University and her DVM from the University of Tennessee. She then practiced at several small animal hospitals in and around Baltimore, Maryland. In 1998, after five years in practice, a greater desire to travel led Dr. Eves to explore other opportunities in veterinary medicine. In early 1999, she began working for Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. (now Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc.). She has been employed with the company since then in technical services, marketing, and international sales positions, and is now Senior Manager of Scientific Communications. Dr. Eves has lectured at dinner meetings for veterinarians and pet owners and has co-authored several articles on the topic of nutritional supplements. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. She shares her home in South Carolina with her amazing PBGV rescue, Lucy, who puts a smile on her face each and every day.

DAWN HITCHCOCKDawn has spent most of her adult life with Bernese Mountain Dogs, having grown up with Mini Poodles and after college, Papillons. She was a handler of Bernese Mountain Dogs before obtaining one as a gift from a friend. As a teen she worked for a professional dog handler, where she learned her craft at an early age. Soon after college Dawn opened a boarding kennel/grooming shop/pet supplies store in Oneonta, New York where she groomed up to ten dogs per day. When it became too much to manage the day-to-day business, being a mother, and taking care of a hobby kennel all at the same time, she sold the business and went to work as a quality assurance manager at a packaging firm in Oneonta. Then she was free on the weekends to attend shows again. Dawn has handled over 100 Bernese Mountain Dogs to their championships and currently lives with eight of these magnificent dogs. She is also licensed by the American Kennel club to judge Bernese Mountain Dogs, Papillons Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and Junior Showmanship. It is her intention to apply for more breeds by the end of 2016. Dawn has also been a member of the BMDCA since 1994, and a founding member of the Piedmont BMDC.

JIM & JENNY DURRANCEWhen Jim and Jenny's households merged there were only two Miniature Schnauzers. Fast forward to 2016. They have also shared their lives with 19 Bernese, 4 Chows and a Golden Retriever. All of these Durrance dogs have participated in dog sports, from conformation and obedience to rally and draft. The time, attention and diligence needed to compete and attend these events demonstrates the dedicated partnership between the humans and their canine partners. Together they have accomplished 5 Champions and 14 NDD Draft Titles, 5 DD Titles and 5 BNDD titles, 15+ dogs with multiple obedience titles ranging from Beginner Novice through Utility Obedience, 3 Versatility Dogs, and too many Rally titles to count! In 1998 Jim become a draft judge and helped the Chattahoochee Valley BMDC begin their draft test program that was successful for so many years. Jenny soon joined Jim as a judge in 2004, which not only supported their local Bernese club but also helped to expand the sport of Draft across the region. Both Jim and Jenny have dedicated their efforts and experience to helping novice handlers develop a method for building a working relationship with their draft dog. The Durrance’s are currently members of the BMDCA, Piedmont BMDC, Clemson Kennel Club and the Dog Obedience Club of Greenville. Past memberships include the Chow Chow Club of America, Sandlapper Golden Retriever Club, Chattahoochee Valley BMDC, Blue Ridge BMDC and Greenville Kennel Club.

I grew up with pets all around and I can't remember a day without a pet. I wanted to be Marlin Perkins when I grew up but since his job at Mutual of Omaha was not available I decided to become a veterinarian.I graduated from University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and went to work in Atlanta for 6 years. I then moved to Greenville, South Carolina to open my own practice, which I did for four years. I had a favorite client and pet who had severe hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis in her knees. The pet was 5 years old and her quality of life was terrible. Libby cried to sit down and cried to stand up. The owner asked me to euthanize her and I couldn't do it. I asked if I could try doing some pain management and rehabilitation. She agreed. A few weeks into the rehab program, Libby tried to play with the children and other dog. A few more weeks, and Libby was counter surfing. Libby lived until 14 years of age! We didn't change that she had hip dysplasia or severe arthritis but we did teach her family how to maintain her and how to keep her going. Libby had a great life and I helped to accomplish that. I was hooked. I opened ARCC -- Animal Rehab & Conditioning in 2013. I am continuing to grow in knowledge, fun, and friends.

TRISH CARTERWe came to the USA in 1976 for two years and here we remain!! While we were living in Connecticut, I became aware of the benefits of Pet Therapy and formally joined Happy Tails in Atlanta in 1991. I have been involved ever since and currently I serve as vice president and evaluator for SC Dogs Pet therapy group in the Anderson and Clemson area. I met my very first Berner in an REI store in Atlanta and vowed to have one myself. It took me a few years as we already had two wonderful dogs but Helen Taylor had a litter at the very moment I needed a dog and I got Matilda …. The very best dog in the entire world! Sadly, Matilda only lived for 7 years but I have since adopted two other Berners from CVBMDC rescue and currently am the proud owner of Wilson and Maya, both of whom are wonderful therapy dogs. I started helping with dog evaluations in the early 1990s and found that I have a natural ability to judge a dog’s character, so I became a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator about eight years ago. I continue to evaluate dogs for Therapy work on a regular basis.

With her first dog in 1972, Carolyn was introduced to conformation, obedience training, and competition. Several moves, horses, three sons and two dogs later she found herself living in Leonberg, Germany and discovered those beautiful Leonberger dogs. One of her sons rode in a wagon pulled by one of those lovely animals in a parade. That was her introduction to draft dogs! On a visit to distant relatives in Bern, Switzerland Carolyn was introduced to their elegant Bernese and lost her heart to this gentle breed. 10 years later she got her first Berner, Dickens. They conquered the obedience, agility and conformation rings and reverted to an earlier passion for therapy and rehab before finding draft. That was thanks to Jim and Jenny Durrance, who later urged me to become a judge. Carolyn has thoroughly enjoyed the fourteen years of meeting folks new to the ‘game’ and watching their progress as they developed closer relationships with their dogs.
