Madagascar shrimp farming specificities
• Shrimp farming started in the 90’ with a National Master Plan to identify best site to build shrimp farm based on evaluation of carrying capacity, EIA and SIA
• Semi extensive model, fully integrated, low stocking density (5 à
15 / m2), 10 ha ponds, no aeration, pumping station for water exchange
• Use of endemic species: P. monodon
4
Constraints
• Sites are very isolated • Poor infrastructure (road,
port, airport) • Need to go for fully
integrated project with high investment level
• Madagascar production impacted by global market.

• No use or limited use of chemical • Site selection and limited impact on benthic • Reduce risk of disease transfer and
responsible use of antibiotic • No transfer and/or introduction of species • Manage feed and feeding responsibly • Control nutrient level in receiving bodies • Responsible management of worker and local
communities • Operate following local and international law
Learn from other experience and work on aquaculture challenges
Because Nature set the standards If farmed, product has to be organic certified
Stable production of 1600 MT of Organic shrimp per year

Sustainable innovation to influence the market
• New initiative ( ….2007) • From standards development to Commercial
success (to be confirmed by the market) • Strength
– Investment of time to build consensus among stakeholders
– Standards development process ISEAL compliance • Weakness to be addressed
– Do not address directly feed yet – Differences between species standards – Cost of certification (?)
