Whereas whether or not respondentshad visi ted Denmark has no affect on their propen-si ty to ci te content-specif ic reasons for visi t ing suchas an interest in porcelain or paintings, i t has ahighly significan t affect in their prop ens ity to cite aninterest in Denmark as a reason for visi t ing. I twould seem, therefore , tha t in te res t in Denmarkamo ng the visi tors surveyed is substantial ly associ-ated with having visi ted the country, and not fromother means such as reading, television or otherDanish exhibit ions. In other words, image may beconsequent of v is i t ing , the par t icu lar per t inence ofexperience derived image thereby being implied.

Some caution needs to be exercised, however, interms of the directness of this effect . Some 62% ofthose visi tors at the Flora Danic a exhibit ion whohad visi ted Denmark, said that their visi t(s) to thecoun try had not influe nced their decision to at tend.At the Danish Ar t exhibit ion the direction of thisaffect was reversed, with 61% of those who hadvis ited Denma rk acknowledging some affec t on the i rdecision to visi t the exhibit ion. Although, those

visi tors to the exhibit ion who had visi ted Denm arkwere also recently more travelled than other visi tors, few other visi tors had not been out of Bri tain in theprevious 5 years. As such, some caution is implied inattr ibut ing an expressed interest in Den mar k bythose who had visi ted i t as a consequence of widertravel.

At the outset of this section the question raisedwas whether or not the visitors to the two exhibi-t ions were ' con suming ' Denma rk as a p lace throughits associations implicit in the displays. In terms ofreas ons for having visited, the answ er is largely no,other than for previous visi tors to Den mark .

two or more associations. A content analysisproduced a number of clear categories: food anddrink; physical attributes of the country and thepeople; economic activity; and society. The associa-tions were clearly dominated by overt-induced infor-mation sources of both tourism and non-tourismagencies, but a number of sub-categories emerged"which reflect autonomous sources, especially thepublicity received in connection with Denmark'sresistance to the Maastricht Treaty.

The overall mental map which can be drawn fromthe knowledge base and free associations of theexhibition goers is not very dissimilar to that drawnby Niss 3" in he r study o f the use o f count ry-of -ori ginlabels in marketing, although some interesting newcomponents could be added, notably the image ofDenmark as a clean, unpolluted country withhealthy people. It also corresponds to a large extentto the image of the country projected by the touristboard and in the marketing of the agriculturalproducts for which Denmark is famous in Britain.

hygienic, expensive, socially aware, modern, organ-ized, artistic, somewhat uncrowded and somewhatinformal. Hygiene was the most frequently rated 1(the maximum score) with 68% of the Flora Danicaexhibition visitors rating Denmark in this way, and62% of the Danish Art exhibition visitors. Expenseand social awareness also attracted high ratings fromboth samples. Of the visitors at the Flora Danicaexhibition, the median scores for both attributeswere 1, and the corresponding median scores amongvisitors to the Danish Art exhibition were both 2. Incontrast, the visitors largely neither saw Denmark asboring nor exciting, or as musical nor unmusical. There was some perception of Denmark as wealthy, with a median score of 2 for both samples.

The summary images recorded in Table 7 do,however, conceal several important differences, notably between visitors who had visited Denmarkand those who had not (Table 8) . Visitors who hadvisited Denmark were more likely than others tocharacterize Denmark as socially aware, hygienic, exciting and informal. Across both samples, otherimages did not vary by whether visitors had been toDenmark or not (although some other effects werefound for each sample only). The absence of an
