Andrew Goodwin’s Theory On Music Videos
By Florence Lamptey
Summary Goodwin’s main point was that the traditional narrative used in films etc does not apply within music videos.
He recognises that pop videos are structured differently whereby the singer is also the narrator and the singer often looks directly at the camera.
He believes pop videos are often repetitive
He also identifies 3 types of relations between songs and videos. Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture
1.Illustration : this is where the video tells the story 2.Amplification: when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with lyrics but add layers of meaning 3.Disjuncture: This is where there is little connection between lyric and video or video contradicts the lyric
AmplificationDj Afro B ft SK – Baba God ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBGxrqfTdfQ
The video helps depict people who were struggling with life issues but eventually giving their life to God and turning to a new path hence the name “Baba GOD”
Illustration Yemi Alade –Johnny ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_XkTKoDI18
The song talks about how “Johnny” is deceiving multiple girls and having relations with each of them including the main artist Yemi Alade. The video illustrates numerous girls who have been lied to by Johnny
Disjuncture
OutKast- Ms. Jackson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYxAiK6VnXwThe song is based on an apology to someone’s mother “ms Jackson” for making her daughter cry but the video illustrates rainy weather and an extreme leaking in a house as a consequence to the weather.
