Ângela Piedade

I consider myself a watercolorist, but for plastic expressivity, I merge several techniques for a better representation of how I feel. I use oil, acrylic and watercolor that let me capture a poetic, diaphanous

and sensual reality.!

I  was  born  in  Seixal  and  live  in  Lisbon.  Watercolorist  by  choice,  I  also  recur  to  other  techniques:  oil,  acrylic,  mixed  techniques,  according  to  the  expression  I  want  to  convey.    Gradua@on  Pain@ng  course,  1990/1991,  in  the  Na@onal  Society  of  Fine  Arts  of  Lisbon,  under  the  guidance  of  the  masters  Jaime  Silva  e  Francisco  Arís@a.  Scien@fic  Illustra@on  course,  2007/2008,  in  the  Ins@tute  of  Arts  and  Trades,  University  Autónoma  de  Lisbon,  by  professor  Pedro  Salgado.  Tile  pain@ng,  1989,  in  the  Associa@on  of  Crafstman  of  Lisbon,  with  the  professor  Margarida  Portela.      I  count  with  60  collec@ve  exhibi@ons,  18  of  small  groups  and  5  individuals.  Par@cipated  in  the  XII  and  XIII  Biennial  of  Plas@c  Arts  of  Festa  do  Avante.

Angela Piedade a través de sus hermosas acuarelas realizadas con gran dominio de la técnica y delicados matices de color nos transporta al mundo onírico, al mundo de los sueños. Podríamos titular acertadamente sus pinturas como sencillos poemas de sueños de color. Angela Piedade no se limita a pintar figuras, callejones o paisajes; Angela pinta retazos de ensoñaciones, trozos de sueños, evocaciones de otros mundos, pero como dijo Paul Éluard “Hay otros mundos pero están en este”. Las figuras de Angela son de este mundo, pero no viven en él; habitan nuestros sueños, navegando en una ensoñación de alegre melancolía, entre la memoria y el olvido. Quizá estas pinturas definan en sí mismas ese estado del alma de tan difícil traducción como es la saudade. Ângela  is  the  wonderful  product  of  a  great  love.  Sure  that  someone  like  Ângela  was  and  it  is  highly  regarded  and  respected  by  numerous  people,  some  of  them  more  close  to  her  than  others,  but  this  great  love  which  we  refer  is  the  love  of  her  father  (Ângelo  was  is  name)  who  wanted  to  plant  the  best  seeds  in  her  is  the  crucial  key  to  understand  miraculous  Ângela.  Because  she  proved  a  ferEle  ground  where  all  these  seeds  germinate  and  become  leafy  trees  in  the  garden  that  is  Ângela,  her  fascinaEng  personality  and  creaEvity.  And  Ângelo,  Ângela's  father,  was  someone  brilliantly  lit  in  the  long  fascist  night  that  fell  on  this  garden  planted  by  the  sea  that  is  Portugal.  Someone  who  was  very  angry  against  the  regimen's  will  to  humiliate  an  enEre  society  by  the  means  of  ignorance,  nescience,  servility  because  of  impotence,  condemning  it  to  the  fullest  coarseness  which  was  disguised  as  religious,  patrioEc  or  family  value.  One  of  the  longest  and  tenacious  dictatorships  in  human  history.  Ângelo  believed  in  social  progress  and  culture  and  because  of  that  the  childhood  and  the  youth  of  Ângela  were  not  only  bathed  in  the  bright  sunshine  of  southern  Portugal-­‐this  light  so  close  to  the  Mediterranean,  Africa  and  Near  East-­‐but  also  by  the  intense  light  of  great    literature  ,  cinema,  visual  arts,  in  short,  the  most  contrary  to  dogma  or  the  sterility  of  white  tombstones.  And  here  we  want  to  introduce  the  cliché  of  art  as  a  reacEon  to  the  death.  Art  as  an  expression  of  Eros  opposing    as  the  final  part  of  the  Thanatos  dictatorship  was  marked  by  the  shame  of  war  made  against  sister  naEons.  Brothers  and  sisters  but  subjected  to  colonialism.  Untold  thousands  perished  or  were  marked  forever  by  the  violence  of  war,  Portuguese  youth  included  to  whom  the  country  did  not  want  to  give  more  than  an  one-­‐way  Ecket  into  the  arms  of  death  or  to  kill.  Ângelo's  indignaEon  was  the  wrath  of  the  young  Ângela  but  common  to  both  the  desire,  the  sensual  Mediterranean.  The  sensual  Mediterranean  desire  for  beauty.  The  love  of  things  that  are  beauEful.  Apart  from  an  inner  strength  that  does  not  break,  a  solid  intellectual  background  and  condiEons  for  a  brilliant  medical  career...  the  love  of  things  that  are  beauEful  was  the  great  legacy.  A  legacy  that  we  can  appreciate  in  all  her  creaEve  manifestaEons.    It  is  well  worth  knowing  the  wriEngs  of    father´s  Ângela.  The  wonderful  memories  made  out  of  love  and  a  sense  of  belonging  to  his  land  on  the  south  bank  of  fabulous  Tagus  river,  our  Nile  and  we  have  to  admit  that  the  work  of  NeferEE  Ângela  is  also  bathed  by  the  colors  and  light  of  the  South  but  absolutely  and  emphaEcally  feminine.  An  eternal  but  powerful  feminine.  Eternal  feminine  but  powerful  force  capable  of  sharping  the  world.  Assumed  in  sensuality  and  eroEcism.  Always  sweet  and  vital.  As  with  Urban  Mermaids  (or  others)  as  with  the  portraits  of  her  child,  now  a  promising  young  arEst  himself.  A  wave  of  delicious  warmth  invades  our  senses  when  faced  with  a  piece  of  her  art.  For  those  who  observe  ,  for  those  who  can  earn  the  prerogaEve,  for  anyone  who  approaches  her  work  and  her  fascinaEng  personality  the  reward  will  be  many;  the  Enlightened  Life  Itself,  as  the  wise  had  said.    Ruka  Campos  (Fine  Art  ArEst)  

“...Se  estudasse  na  Faculdade  de  Medicina  de  Lisboa  em  1963,  e  pedisse  apontamentos  à  sua  colega  Ângela  Piedade,  iria  logo  descobrir  qual  era  a  sua  verdadeira  paixão.  Já  no  primeiro  ano  do  curso  os  cadernos  da  futura  doutora  estavam  completamente  preenchidos  por  desenhos.  «Isto  ajudou  especialmente  quando  @nha  de  estudar  anatomia»,  conta,  a  sorrir.      Para  Ângela  Piedade,  a  LICE  é  mais  uma  exposição  a  acrescentar  à  longa  lista,  que  já  inclui  mais  de  60  eventos.  É  um  número  impressionante,  se  @ver  em  conta  que  Ângela  só  recentemente  se  começou  a  dedicar  mais  à  pintura,  dividindo-­‐se  entre  as  aguarelas  e  os  óleos.  «A  minha  prioridade  até  determinada  altura  foi  a  medicina.  Não  @nha  opção,  era  uma  ou  outra».      Aos  58  anos,  Ângela  confessa  que  gostaria  de  ter  ido  para  a  Faculdade  de  Belas-­‐Artes  de  Lisboa,  mas  os  tempos  eram  outros.  «Entrei  na  faculdade  antes  do  25  de  Abril.  Se  hoje  é  diycil,  imagine  naquela  altura».      «Era  um  país  muito  pequeno  em  todos  os  sen@dos,  que  limitava  a  cria@vidade».  Como  em  todas  as  épocas,  houve  quem  arriscasse.  Porém,  quem  o  fez  pagou  «muito  alto  por  isso»,  conta  a  pintora.  O  preço  foi  o  exílio  e  a  fome.  «Muitos  acabaram  por  se  tornar  professores»  porque  @nham  famílias  para  alimentar.      Apesar  de  não  se  ter  aventurado,  nunca  parou  de  pintar.  Até  foi  fazendo  exposições,  mas  @nha  de  fazer  sacriycios,  como  deitar-­‐se  às  cinco  da  manhã  para  acordar  às  sete.  Não  se  arrepende,  pois  «a  arte  é  fundamental».      A  medicina  e  a  arte  não  se  fundem  apenas  na  vida  de  Ângela...”
