Holy Week & Easter is a special time in our liturgical calendar. “We are an Easter people, ours is an Easter faith…”

Bill Wallace. This year the Ministry Team committed to Midday Prayer in every church in the Parish during Holy Week. It is a spiritual discipline & part of our discipleship to pray throughout & over the Parish. Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday is a journey of faith. The Easter or Paschal Triduum was celebrated wonderfully within the Parish. On Holy or Maundy Thursday, Rev. John Jay & the Colyton team led the remembering of Christ’s servant-hood in the washing of feet followed by the institution of the Last Supper, with the wonderful words of David Kossoff ringing in our ears. Good Friday, Rev. Muriel Dewe, Bobbie & Lindsay Nicholls & the Kimbolton team led us from the betrayal to the cross.

“Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment

for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so

we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.

We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was

oppressed & treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.”

Isaiah 53:4-7. On Holy Saturday the Easter Eve Vigil we recommitted ourselves to Christian Service through Renewal of Baptismal Vows & a liturgy of light. A time of becoming the people of God gathered around our commitment to serve as Christians & the altar of communion. Easter Day, the feast of the Resurrection, was celebrated well across the Parish, with my personal highlight being the focus on young people & Baptism & great music in Feilding. Easter Eve & Day are traditionally the time in the Church Year that Baptism is made, welcome to those who made this commitment. The joy of the Easter Season is now upon us. Parish ‘family’ Camp was a fab fun time of fellowship

ANGLER CONTRIBUTIONS All Parishioners are invited to make a contribution towards the Angler if they wish to. This is the OROUA PARISH Magazine, YOUR Magazine, & contributions from every corner of the Parish would be appreciated & welcomed. I encourage you all to take up the challenge. & food. About 30 parishioners enjoyed each other’s company at Waitarere Beach. God is indeed good. Parish ‘family’ Camp 2015 will be Friday 27 – Sunday 29 March (Palm Sunday) & a Sub-Committee of Patsy Barry, Jo Darling, Jeanette Goodwin, Debbie Seymour, Steph Seymour & Ven. David van Oeveren will be arranging it. Save the date now, & if you have anything you wish to contribute chat to a team member. The Parish Gala was again a great success, the highlight for me being the interaction of Parishioners & pastoral conversations that happen on the day. Thanks to Robert Heath & his team for yet another great year. For our 2015 Parish Gala (Parish Fair & Garage Sale) we have an organising Sub-Committee of Sue Ascott-Evans, Sarah Burge & Jeanette Goodwin. If you have an idea or can lend a hand, please talk to a member of the Team. The next major community outreach is our Parish Holiday Programme. This year we are taking a huge step of faith & running our own programme. We need you to support, Lead, Help & let all 5-12 year olds know about it. See advert in this issue or the Angler. The dates are Mon 7 – Fri 11 July. Please help us as we reach out into the community.

Good News. Great Joy

As we fast approach mid winter Christmas I ask you once again to start thinking about our Operation Christmas Child appeal. All of our lovingly packed boxes includes gifts from each of the following 6 categories, every item destined to light up the world of a child in need:

SOMETHING TO LOVE Teddy bear, doll, soft toy, etc.

SOMETHING FOR SCHOOL Exercise book, pencil case, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, sharpener, eraser, chalk, etc.

SOMETHING TO WEAR T-shirt, shorts, underwear, cap, beanie, sandals, thongs, etc.

SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH Tennis ball, cars, skipping rope, marbles, musical instrument, yo-yo, slinky, finger puppets, wind up torch, etc. (No battery operated items)*

SOMETHING FOR PERSONAL HYGIENE Soap and face washer, toothbrush, hairbrush, comb, hair-clips, scrunchies, etc.(No toothpaste)*

SOMETHING SPECIAL Carry bag, sunglasses, bangles, necklaces, craft kits, stickers, note or photo of yourself. If you're clever and can knit or sew can you make a beanie, a scarf, a doll or a pair of socks? Have you any spare wool you could donate to our avid knitters? In addition to the gifts each box requires a $9 donation to ensure it reaches its intended destination, if you don't want to shop or create please consider making a donation towards the shipping costs. Last year we proudly dispatched 27 boxes an amazing total that I am sure we can improve on this year. An Operation Christmas Child shoebox is more than a gift …it opens up a world of life-changing opportunities for the child, their family and their community. No matter how old or young you are, pack a shoebox this year for a child who has nothing. Donations can be left in the Parish Office. For further information about OCC please visit www.operationchristmaschild.org.au

This is a question I am asked from time to time. Cursillo pronounced CURSIO, is a Spanish word meaning short course; a short course in Christian living. There are 4 courses this year; two for men, and two for women. The first men's course is the long weekend of 5-8 June at El Rancho, Waikanae; and the first women's is the following month, July, in Masterton. Others

follow later. Cursillo is a lay organisation, encouraged by the clergy and overseen in this diocese by Bishop Justin. It is a world wide organisation that has grown substantially during the last two decades. A Cursillo weekend is an opportunity to open ourselves to the grace and love of God by hearing talks, engaging in discussions, prayer and worship, with music and singing and laughter. There is time for reflection, silence and creative expression. It is not a retreat; it is more a workshop to help us deepen and nourish our faith by exploring the essential aspects of Christian belief within a supportive weekend loving community. It also gives an opportunity to see what it means to be a disciple of Christ today. If you have access to a computer more information can be found on www.wn.anglican.org.nz. I have attended 5 weekends in all; one as a pilgrim and four as a spiritual advisor. It is wonderful to take time out from busy lives and focus on what truly matters as Christians. I have not encountered anyone who has spoken negatively about their experience at a Cursillo weekend. John Jay

Our year started with donating a pre-loved doll and clothes as a raffle prize at the Garden Party organised by the St Johns Social Club. The winner was a Fellowship member, who was delighted and is saving it for her granddaughter. Thank you to the two members who provided the baby doll and clothes. Our Club meetings started in February with an indoor picnic, which was enjoyed by all who came along, including the van Oeveren family. On the

13th March we had Rev. John Merriman speak to us about his “life journey so far”. This was very uplifting, and the evening ended with fellowship and supper. The April meeting was a “fun” evening, making newspaper Easter bonnets, without using scissors. Prizes were awarded for the best hat, runners-up, and the most effort. Our May meeting was a luncheon on the 8th, starting at midday. Lesley Bates from Social Socks was our guest speaker for the afternoon. This brings us to an important date; 12 June, our annual Overseas & Outreach fundraising day. We really need your support on this day to help us give to others. We extend an open invitation to everyone to come along to hear Rilma Sands speak to us about her journey on the ‘Peacetrain’. There will also be a service before lunch, sales table and raffles ongoing with plenty of time for fellowship . All proceeds will be going to an Overseas Outreach cause. With God’s help and your support we can have a successful year. Val Harris & Committee.

What a great Easter we celebrated in the Parish of the Oroua. We started the week with Palm Sunday, and from there everything just flowed. Maundy Thursday was lead by the Faith Community of Colyton, and included the washing of feet. Good Friday was a quiet service led by Lindsay and his team from Kimbolton. Afterwards a friendly gathering at the Barry’s for coffee and hot cross buns. Thanks Patsy and Rob.

Saturday’s service was led by Rev. John M, and was held at Stanway at Saturday lunch time. Saturday night was The Easter Vigil. We started with the Church in darkness, and a ‘fire’ out the back. From there the Easter candle was lit and processed into the Church. Quiet time, renewal of Baptismal vows, and we quietly dispersed. Sunday was a wonderful Service. A great Congregation, the music was special, even a Solo from Tim. We then had a lovely Baptism and the rest just followed, finishing with a cuppa in the Hall. Thanks ladies. Our first meeting of the new Vestry team was held on Tuesday 15 April, and it looks like we are going to have a great year. Hopefully we are going to have different groups for various projects we have in mind. Watch this space. Until next time, God’s Blessings on us all, Jeanette (Peoples Warden.)

Ellie Bartlett worships in the Oroua parish - mainly at Stanway and Kimbolton along with her husband, George and three children, Mary-Ellen, Louise and William who are 17, 14 and 9. Hi My names Ben (check out my number plate) and I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who gave so generously to John for his ordination present. You see the ordination money went towards buying me! Now I am going to help Rev. John to get to all the places he needs to go (Colyton, Rangawhai, Stanway, to name a few ) as well as all the trips he does around Feilding and

Palmerston North for services, funerals, hospital visits, spiritual direction etc.. So give me a toot if you see me go by and bless you all for giving me a new home. From: the family of BEN

Education For Ministry (EFM) wants you but do you want EFM? What is EFM I hear you ask ... well it is an adult learning programme designed to link Christian faith with daily life, and to deepen Christian discipleship. The programme combines scholarly and systematic Bible study and education in theology and church history, with small group worship, prayer and fellowship. What is learnt through the study is joined to our lives and experiences through the exciting, challenging, and faith-building process of theological reflection.

Interested?? Read on ... EFM is a four-year programme of study and reflection. The EFM programme covers the range of the Christian tradition from the earliest period to the present. Year 1: The Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) Year 2: The New Testament Year 3: Church History Year 4: Theology, Ethics, and Inter-faith Encounter In New Zealand, the EFM course also includes additional study covering church history in this country. Each year of the EFM programme covers 36 sessions, framed into five units of study, as well as two “interludes” in which participants in all years of the EFM programme read a common text. A four-year cycle of Reading and Reflection Guides (RRG) provides the framework for each year of study, guiding participants through their reading with questions and reflections to stimulate their study and thinking, and to guide their group discussion. Lindsay Nicholls is in the process of starting up a new group in our Parish. If you feel called to consider this exciting programme pleased contact Lindsay on 06 3234120.

A Heavenly Happy Haven

20 + C + M + B + 14 What could possibly top a weekend at the beach? Sunshine, good people, delicious food and a copious supply of home brew, what's not to like?!? It never ceases to amaze me just how well parish camp works, just how easy it is to spend a whole weekend with people with whom most of which we are merely acquainted, but on departure there is always a unique bond formed, a new deeper meaning to our relationships, one which speaks of understanding and real

friendship. Perhaps it is our profound diversity that makes it work so well, there is always a revelation about someone's character which opens our eyes to see them in a new light and view their lives from a different perspective. "I never knew" features regularly as we chat. It's not about bragging but when someone places a beautiful trout on the table that they themselves have caught and prepared a certain amount of admiration has to creep in. Maybe these enlightening disclosures occur because suddenly we have the time to chat, to take an interest and just be, we make space in our busy schedules to notice the little things, learn and most importantly listen.

With Waitarere being so close to home we had a continuous flow of people all weekend, we even had Jeanette's daughter from Australia and grandson visit us! A few people stayed but mostly people fitted camp around their prior engagements. They came and went as required which made the time they spared us all the more remarkable.

Once again Lindsay and Doug were masters of the BBQ and did us proud ensuring that magnificent food appeared almost continuously throughout the weekend. How we managed to do anything else other than eat is somewhat surprising. However the weather was beautiful and in addition to waxing lyrical around the table outside we wandered on the beach, re-energizing our batteries and clearing the cobwebs with deep lungsful of sea air. Rods were cast into the ocean, whole cities of sandcastles built and holes to England were dug. Once the sun set and the air cooled we retreated inside to sample Doug's liquorice beer and various wines, putting the world to rights and sharing favourite tunes on various electronic devices. Considering our surroundings perhaps a record player would have been more appropriate but being able to think of a song, locate it and play it in a matter of minutes is somewhat awesome, modern

technology has its place even in times of peaceful meditation. During Sunday communion David performed an Epiphany house blessing, this involved the blessing of pumice which was used as chalk to inscribe the initials of the three Magi outside the front door. Usually done by a priest or father of the house with the children inscribing the initials David extended the occasion to include all the children on camp emphasizing the "we are family" concept. Communion is always a poignant time but being able to participate in this highly personal moment added another dimension and again accentuated our kinship. Thank you to Barb and Colin Funnell for allowing us to use their home for sleeping, and a huge and heartfelt thank you to David and Sue for the use of their beautiful space, a truly Happy Haven indeed.

So if all this inspires you to kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes, hang up the Gone Fishing sign and mark off Friday 27th to Sunday 29th March 2015 in your diary. We'll see you there!

Being a Disciple "According to my dictionary a Disciple is - one who receives instruction from another, ie a teacher. An Apostle is - a messenger sent out to advocate a cause. While I was listening to a Bach fugue (G minor, BWV 578 ) it crossed my mind that it could be regarded as a metaphor for disciples and apostles. The teacher gives the message - a few notes, which is accepted in turn by 4 disciples - 2 hands and 2 feet. But although each modifies the message in their own way, the whole is still harmonious; it is still the same message. And, in spite of differences, when they work together in harmony they advocate the teacher’s cause to those prepared to listen. ! Corinthians chapter 12, verse 12 states:- Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. We are not afraid of the emotions which arise when we hear good music or drink a good wine - according to our tastes - but we are often afraid of the emotions which religion may generate. Are we afraid someone may laugh if sometimes we hit a bum note? Musicians of varying skills still give public performances. Mathew 26 says - more or less - go to all nations teaching them my message of love - and remember that I will always be with you. Discipleship is not a private , stay at home, production. Each of us, in our own way, must become apostles publically showing the Christ in our lives in the way we live those lives."

Our Glorious Gala Well despite the weather not behaving quite as we would of hoped (although we know the farmers have all been praying for rain so perhaps their needs outweighed ours at this particular time) and a slow start, the Parish Gala turned out to be an outstanding success. From the ever popular and always the first to sell out meat stall to jams and pickles, pre-loved clothes and shoes to plants and books, white elephants stalls, face

painting, stilt walking, bash the rat, pony poo, and decorate a cup cake. We certainly had the variety this year and people came in steady waves to browse, buy, and sample the delectable delights in the tea rooms. There was a carnival atmosphere and it was wonderful to see our church grounds packed full of happy smiling faces, the joyful sounds of laughter and banter reverberated as people mixed and mingled. David set off a new trend of purchasing chops and having them cooked immediately on the BBQ with a splash of Bobbie’s delectable plum sauce. A rather sticky but happy Venerable took the preceding teasing in good humour and cheerily brushed off a reprimand from Sue with assurances that he would indeed take an indigestion tablet before the instant gratification came back to haunt him later in the evening! It was one of our Parish’s special days, and it is good to remind ourselves of these times when we are feeling a little discouraged or disillusioned. It is easy to get weighed down with the negatives and as Bishop Justin preached recently, it is very easy to consider ourselves a victim when things aren't perhaps going the way that we would like. But here on this less than clement day our hall was filled with warm hearted people, parishioners who had made an immense effort, who had planned and organized and who had used their time constructively and positively to support the church they love. It is these people that make a church family, the ones who spare an hour in their day before shooting off to Dannevirke to attend a family get together, the ones who have been up since the crack of dawn milking but still find the time to call in and say "Hi how's it going", the countless people who donated past treasures and slaved over hot stoves and ovens to create jams and pickles, cakes and buns, these are the voices we should be hearing in our parish, these are the times we should cherish. We all have a choice whether to treasure and nurture our chosen place of worship or to destroy it piece by piece with petty grievances. We are family after all and as with any family we make mistakes, we might not always get along and there are things we may not always approve of or condone, but as family we forgive, we compromise and we move on. We do this in our church family because we are disciples of God and because if we cannot be forgiving then how can we encourage and teach others to be. It is hard to be the better person, it is difficult to always be benevolent, it is easy to speak harsh words and even easier to write them but in order for our church to have a future we need to radiate the positives, sing the praises and be proud of who we are and what we believe in. We need to uphold and empower our spiritual leaders so that they continue to have the strength and the passion to build the Realm of God in the Oroua, within the Anglican tradition.

The Eagles Soar Into 2014 For those of you with kids, who teach kids or have absolutely anything at all to do with kids, you will know that last term was EPIC! It was a War and Peace length term, a gruelling

marathon in which everyone involved clawed their way through to the finish line using every last ounce of strength and resilience they had within them. It would of been understandable if our numbers had dropped, if by the end of term our Eagles had been too exhausted to flap their wings on a Friday night but surprisingly this was not the case. Exhibiting stamina worthy of any Olympic athlete their energetic enthusiasm never faltered and, perhaps fuelled by the lure of chocolate, turned up for our Easter

bonanza end of term egg hunt with a hoot and a roar. Last term was centred around Easter, we began with Strove Tuesday when John tirelessly mixed, poured and flipped a plethora of pancakes on a camping stove to feed our ever hungry flock. For Ash Wednesday we made pretzels. After a slightly dubious start the end result was magnificent and would have given any NYC bakery a run for their money. Pretzels are actually a traditional food for Lent, when early Christians would pray, they would cross their arms and touch each shoulder with the opposite hand. They also fasted very

strictly during lent, making their bread with only water, flour, and salt. A monk shaped this in the form of praying arms for children, and the pretzel was born! There was no Sacred Sleep Over this term due to Parish Camp at Waitarere Beach but we celebrated many birthdays and helped prepare for the Parish Gala. We also welcomed several

new faces to our convocation which is always a delight and I mustn't forget to mention that some of our Eagles have made the step up to become leaders this term and are doing a brilliant job bringing new ideas and youthful energy to our Friday nights. Term 2 is full of promise even though it is thankfully a great deal shorter. We have a

lot to pack in with Mother’s Day truffles, Chestnut flyers for Pentecost, threefold fun for Trinity and a Christmas tree challenge for Midwinter Christmas. Saturday 28th June from 4pm is our Super Sacred Sleep Over followed by Come to Worship with us on Sunday 29th June at 9.45am. End of term celebrations are swiftly followed by our ALL NEW Oroua Holiday Programme running from Monday 7th until Friday 11th July. We promise the week will be filled with music, songs, crafts, games, challenges, quizzes, and much much more. Plan to be a part of it!
