WHO ARE WE?
As Makeup Artists, we all have
that creative flair and love an
edgy, editorial look! So I am
going to run through, step by
step, the super creative and
stunning look from the Prada
Autumn/Winter 2012 collection.
The key Makeup Artist for this
look is one of the top in the
world, Pat McGrath. She is well
known for using her fingers more
than her brushes!
At London fashion week, Pat
McGrath explained her creative
process: “I’m influenced a lot
by the fabrics that I see, the
colours that are in the
collections and the girl’s faces.
It’s always a challenge but
that’s the key – to make it
different every time”.
The Prada Autumn/Winter collection
had thick fabrics and mixed
patterns, inspiring Pat McGrath to
create this fantastic look.
Here’s how to do it: Step one: Apply a white eyeshadow in the inner corner of the lid.
Step two: Apply a dark black eyeshadow or greasepaint on to the lid right up
to the brow with a round edge. This must be a shocking, stand out black so
if using a shadow, wet your brush for higher intensity!
Step three: Apply a show stopping orange all the way round the black, just
like a border. The width of the orange should be the width of the brow,
covering the entire brow. So again this orange needs to be intense! Use a
high pigmented colour!
Step four: Use a bright white eyeliner to colour in the water line and
extend the line just a bit and in to a point as shown in the picture. This
point creates a winged effect.
Step five: Just as the orange was a border for the black, now create a deep
purple border for the white. Not as thick, and don’t forget to border the
white point with a purple point, emphasising the winged effect!
Step six: Mascara of course!
Step seven: Apply a flawless base, suck in those cheeks and apply a taupe
colour to contour. Apply a highlighter to cheekbones and watch those cheeks
pop! And for an extra chiselled look, contour the sides of the nose and
highlight along the middle.
Step eight: Nude lip, natural as possible, no distractions from those
fantastic eyes!

Laura Mercier - Secret Camouflage. This bad boy

lot. It’s based on a 2 palette system where-by
you take four strokes from one tone and four
strokes from the other. Mix the strokes on the
back of your hand or palette and apply with
concealer brush. TIP: Do not use under eyes
consistency is too thick (see next review for
perfect under eye correction) RRP £26
Luscious Lashes
We have all seen those MUA’s that put Essex
style lashes on a beautiful make up and therefore
ruining their end photograph. Say no more to fake
looking lashes with Eyelure. Their glue actually
STICKS and they are cheap! The Eyelure
Naturalites Collection is the best range. The
ones I use for beauty, fashion, editorial and
even yourself are the ‘Glamour’ lashes. They
have just the right amount of volume and length
for that perfect lash look. RRP £3-£14.
Perfect Patterned Nails
For those creative shoots where you don’t have
time to do nail art grab yourself some nails
wraps. Everyone has heard of them but have you
used them? They are a god send time saver. You
can find them on Ebay from as little as £1 and
they come in every pattern imaginable. TIP: Apply
a good top coat like OPI or Jessica to stop the
wrap from chipping throughout the shoot.
Quick Fix Removal
For a quick removal of eye make up Dior’s
Instant Eye Make Up Remover is the perfect
solution. I have used a lot of eye make up
removers that say they remove quickly and
effectively and they do quite the opposite, you
end up scrubbing away at the poor models eyes.
This is a dual action formula which is perfect
for sensitive eyes and dissolves even the
toughest of eye make up!. TIP: Apply to a dry pad
(or a wet pad if there is a lot of eye make up on
the eye area) hold for 20-30 seconds and sweep
away. RRP £22

Review
Shooting Beauty is the brainchild of Nina
Malone and Matt Dowling. With over 20 years
combined experience in fashion and business,
the duo have seen and done it all. Nina's
background in modelling and production has
seen her travel all over the world
experiencing numerous fashion environments
while Matt has over 12 years experience in
fashion photography and business. Both Matt
and Nina shared the same concern that new
talent in the fashion industry was not
receiving the necessary business education or
shoot experience to kick start their careers.
Many new makeup artists, stylists,
photographers and hair stylists have the
skills and qualifications but lack the
business know-how, practical experience and
presentation to push on to paid work. It is
because of this that Shooting Beauty was
born.
What do you offer?
We offer 3 main services to help fashion
talent in the industry find work. Our ethos
is "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a
day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for
life". Here's how we do it.
Firstly, we provide practical experience in
the form of a professional fashion shoot. New
creatives will get the chance to collaborate
with experienced professionals who have
worked with some of the fashion industries
leading publications and fashion shows. This
gives new talent the hands on experience of
working with pros, builds confidence to shoot
in a professional environment and prepares
them for a real fashion job. Additionally,
new talent will learn how to work with a team
and produce high end fashion images using pro
models in stunning fashion locations.
Secondly, we provide a one on one
consultation to discuss basic business
techniques and strategy in an easy to
understand conversation with our friendly and
approachable consultants. This is an
opportunity to understand the fashion
business a bit more and plan the next move to
find paid fashion work.
Finally, using the images taken on the day,
we can provide small business packages for a
new freelance life. From freelancer websites
to business cards, we can build an expert
business package that will maximise the
chances of finding work and help new talent
grow to be a professional freelancer.
WHO DO YOU WORK WITH?
The Shooting Beauty team has been carefully
selected from the cream of the fashion
industry. All freelancers, our fashion team
have experience in London, New York, Paris
and Milan Fashion Week. They have worked on
shoots for Vivienne Westwood, Gucci and
Valentino as well as publications such as
Vogue, Dazed and Confused and i-D to name a
few. In short - they're good, really good.
HOW CAN SHOOTING BEAUTY HELP ME?
Shooting Beauty have had great success
helping both new and established talent find
work. Previous visitors to the studio have
found work at London Fashion Week, shooting
Vivienne Westwood look books, catwalk shows,
fashion shoots, events and everything in
between. Even better, ex-Shooting Beauty
clients have learned to push on and build a
thriving freelance business. We have an open
door system that encourages freelancers to
stay in touch and gain continued advice from
us as they grow to be successful freelance
artists.

Q&A
Who is BECCA?
BECCA originated from the simple desire to find the “perfect foundation.” Frustrated by her own inability
to find this elusive product, Australian makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams formulated the ultimate
range of skin-perfecting products in 2001. With a focus on innovative textures and an extensive colour
range, Rebecca identified a gap in the marketplace to enable all women - regardless of their age, skin tone
or skin type - to experience the pleasure of a flawless and luminous complexion.
The BECCA flagship boutique opened in London in 2005, and BECCA quickly became renowned within the industry
as the go-to brand specialising in skin cosmetics. With arguably the world’s finest foundations,
concealers and powders, BECCA set a new performance benchmark and has established itself as a reference for
quality, style and creativity. Adored by beauty editors, top makeup artists and celebrities globally, the
brand has developed a cult following with award-winning products and continues to be innovative with
sought-after ingredients and technological advancements in this competitive industry.
Q&A
Why train at BECCA make up academy? The BECCA Makeup Academy in London offers holistic
training and professional expertise with a range
of courses, tutorials and masterclasses. Taught by
high-profile London Makeup Artists, the BECCA
Academy provides the ultimate learning platform
for those wishing to enter into the world of
makeup artistry, as well as those looking to
expand their skill set in more specialised areas.
Unlike the usual beauty-school classroom approach,
the BECCA Academy has a small group policy
allowing no more than eight students in each
course. This offers a more intimate environment
that is interactive, and ensures each student
receives the personal one-to-one attention
required to develop practical skills.
The BECCA Academy is held in the BECCA Studio
space in London, giving a unique insight into the
beauty and fashion industry. Top freelance makeup
artists working as a specialist in their field –
whether that be fashion, special FX, bridal or
film – feature as guest tutors throughout the
course. This not only gives students an of-the-
minute experience with artists who are working in
the industry today, it also offers a fantastic
networking opportunity to make contacts with
industry insiders.
The course finishes with a photoshoot day in the
BECCA Studio, working with a professional
photographer to create the first images for the
students portfolio. For the professional courses,
BECCA’s design team use these images to create a
professional website to showcase the makeup
artist’s work – an essential platform for any
makeup artist entering the industry, and a
fantastic bonus of the BECCA course that usually
requires substantial investment.
The professional courses also receive a full
professional kit upon completion, so they are
ready to start work immediately with top quality
products. All students receive automatic
membership to BECCA’s Industry Alliance Program,
an exclusive industry privilege which allows a 30%
discount on all BECCA products purchased.
BECCA Academy employees all work within the
industry as freelance artists, and offer
continuous support and opportunities to students
after they complete their course.
Life after BECCA - By past student, Kerri-Lee Stein I completed the intensive BECCA Academy Course
just over a year ago, after which I was lucky
enough to be offered a job working for BECCA. In
the last year I have gained a lot more experience
in the industry and the role enables me to work as
a freelance makeup artist as well as have the
stability of regular work. I have mostly focused
on bridal makeup work, doing makeup for brides and
working at London shows. It’s always so varied
and involves quite a lot of travelling for bridal
clients – doing a wedding in Cyprus was a
highlight! I really feel like the BECCA course
gave me a lot of opportunities. There are only a
few people of each course, so it felt very
personal and tailored to my individual needs. The
tutor and feature artists were very inspiring, and
it was great to be able to spend that time with
them.
Can BECCA help me? With a variety of different courses and specialist
masterclasses on offer, the BECCA Academy caters
to both aspiring makeup artists keen to enter the
industry and professional artists wanting to
expand their skills. Payment plans can be arranged
for the longer professional courses prior to the
course. For full Academy information or to
organise an appointment to visit the Academy,
please contact Joanne Hook on 020 7352

Studs
Lace Appliqué
Adorning garments with jewels and sequins is
no longer the go to for outfit updates. The
humble stud was seen all over the Balmain and
Versace SS’12 catwalks, and one of Elle’s
featured brands at graduate fashion week was
niche customisation project Famous for
Fifteen.
Famous for Fifteen’s Amy and Omid are second
year university students who started the
brand in their spare time. Using inspiration
from Instagram, Pinterest and blogs, they
truly epitomise DIY fashion by creating
carefree, fun and individual pieces.
To follow Amy and Omid’s lead, simply buy
studs from any Haberdashery
Push the stud through the material – this
can be anything that’s looking a bit tired
Flip the fabric over and using a thimble or
tweezers, fold the teeth into the middle of
the stud to secure it.
It’s dead easy to do, and even easier to
make your own.
For autumn, designers such as Erdem and
Christopher Kane continued to embrace
the appliqués popular throughout spring
and summer. Winter floral designs are
darker and dramatic than the summer
versions, but equally delicate.
The good news is that you don’t have to
have a designer budget to recreate this
look. In fact, as well as being on-trend,
it’s a great way of making basic pieces
look more high-end. Here are our
instructions
Cut your design out of the lace.
Carefully trim the edges and set with a
fray preventing gel. Depending on the
look you want to create, you could also
set the lace onto a backing fabric.
Pin the appliqués to your garment,
ensuring that each lie flat.
Sew your appliqués by hand.
Alternatively, attach a fusible bonding
web to the reverse to apply by iron. Just
remember to set the temperature according
to the type of lace you are using (is it
cotton lace or acrylic?) and to cover
with a cloth when ironing. It’s also
best to sew around the edges to prevent
wear.
Always allow the appliqué to cool before
removing the cloth.
STYLIST SECRETS
DiY
No-sew feathers
Bleach it
Adding different textures to a garment is
a great way to transform it.
As part of Vogue’s Customisation Panel,
Mark Fast demonstrated how easily an old
jumper can be recycled into a dress by
way of a woollen hem, and the a/w2012
shows were full of feather trims.
This DIY dress combines the two! You will
need:
1. Feather trim (enough for two layers
per row)
2. Fabric glue
3. A plain dress or skirt
Working from the bottom, glue a layer of
feather trim to cover the hem. Then add a
second layer directly over the first.
Continue adding double layers with a
couple of inches between each. If your
dress is bodycon, note the part that
needs to give. When you reach that part,
dot the glue onto the trim rather than
applying it to the whole length, allowing
a little extra trim between each dot –
stretching room! Apply a drop of glue to
the trim wherever there is a gap and
pinch to create a small pleat. Repeat
until you reach the waist. You could also
add a studded or embellished trim to
finish.
Bleaching fabrics is very easy to do but
you must be extremely careful when using
bleach. All you need is a piece of
clothing, some general household bleach,
a bucket, rubber gloves and a hanger or
something to hold your item of clothing
while bleaching. Bleach tends to turn
things a rusty shade of yellow when
applied, so don’t be surprised if you
have to bleach something a few times.
You want to mix your bleach to two parts
bleach and one part water to get the
right solution, generally you will need
to leave your item soaking for around 30
minutes. If you want to add colour to the
bleached item, you can get some great
fabric dyes on eBay and in fabric stores.
This is great for a dip dyed look,
especially on denim. Don’t be afraid to
get experimental, this is a great look
for summer festivals.

Hair Hero truly did live up to
the industry’s
expectations... and more.
Leaving school a fully

joined his brothers at their
Toni&Guy salon in South

His charismatic personality

By the 80’s, Anthony’s wife,

picked up a camera. He began
capturing his art from behind
the lens too. Interviews with

With the Spring/Summer 2013 shows fast approaching, the fashion industry has been scoping out the newest
design talent to surface in 2012. After a hugely influential London Fashion Week back in the Spring, an extremely successful Graduate Fashion Week this June, and the announcements of the latest NEWGEN winners,
we are certainly set for a flurry of fashion talent for our country to be proud of. All in all 2012 is shaping up to be the UK’s year and it doesn’t stop at our fashion. Having spent time at London Fashion

Spain is a country which has been influential in fashion for many centuries. High fashion designs are shown

these traditional events include heavily embellished silk jackets which have been worn by many huge
celebrities such as Michael Jackson and harem trousers. There are many world famous Spanish clothing

Our events are a great networking
