Background and notes

• This document reports industry recognised television viewing figures provided by BARB (Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board) which consists of a panel of 5,100 television homes.

• In 2010, a new BARB panel was introduced – as a result data pre- and post-2010 are based on different viewer panels. In addition, refined geographic boundaries were also introduced. Data comparisons pre- and post-2010 should be considered with caution.

• Changes made to the BARB reporting system in 2010 now allow broadcasters to retrospectively amend the genre labelling of broadcasts they have aired. These changes will apply to all historic data for respective programmes. The analysis within this report is based on a snapshot of data at a given point in time, therefore any subsequent genre labelling amendments will not be accounted for here. The analysis reported here is based on data generated in April 2014.

• The analysis presented is based on BARB data extracted from the Kantar Media InfoSys+ system. This system was introduced in 2012 and as a result there maybe some minor data variations compared with previously presented data.

• Due to the use of large datasets, there maybe some minor data discrepancies as a result of rounding.

4

Background and notes

• Unless stated all analysis is based on whole days. Peak time is defined as 6pm to 10.30pm.

• The analysis looks at trends in viewing across PSB channels; BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4, S4C, Channel 5, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBeebies, CBBC, BBC News, BBC Parliament and BBC HD – as well as viewing to the commercial portfolio channels owned by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, and all other multichannels.

• Channel 4 data for 2008-2009 includes S4C viewing. Following digital switchover in Wales in 2010, Channel 4 data from 2010 onwards relates to viewing to Channel 4 only.

• The majority of the genre analysis focuses on total annual viewing hours, which shows the total annual

hours of viewing by an average individual (aged 4+) to a given programme genre. Unless indicated, figures show averages for all viewers aged 4+.

• Genre groups used across the viewing analysis are based on Ofcom definitions, which are based on using existing BARB genre groups, or in most cases, combining a number of sub-genres (see Definitions). These definitions vary from genre groups used in previously presented data and therefore comparisons between reports are not recommended.

• The main multichannel channel in each set of genre analysis is based on the most viewed multichannel channel in 2013. The corresponding viewing data from 2008-2013 for this channel is shown.

Summary: Channel reach –PSB family groups

• While the main five PSB channels all experienced a fall in average weekly reach over the analysis

period, the average weekly reach of the respective family of channels (including the main PSB channels) remained relatively steady. In 2013, the average weekly reach of the BBC family was 84.2% and the ITV family stood at 73.4%. The 2013 average weekly reach figures for the Channel 4 family and Channel 5 family were 64.6% and 43.5% respectively (Figure 2).

• The overall trends in average weekly reach across the family groups are similar among viewers aged 16-34 and those aged 35+. The average weekly reach figures for these groups tend to be higher among viewers aged 35 or over compared with 16-34 year olds and all individuals – while figures for 16-34 year olds are lower. Among 16-34 year olds, the Channel 4 family reach figure has been marginally higher than that for the ITV family group in recent years (Figures 3 & 4).

Summary: Channel reach – PSB family groups and additive reach of portfolio channels BBC • The role of the portfolio channels varies among age groups, accounting for 6.7% of additive reach

among 16-34 year olds and 2.1% among those aged 35+ in 2013 (Figures 5 & 6).

ITV • While the total ITV family reach was higher among adults aged 35 or over (81.7% in 2013) compared

with 16-34 year olds (62.7%), the additional reach attributed to the portfolio channels was higher among the younger viewers (12.6% in 2013) than viewers aged 35+ (8.8% in 2013) (Figures 7 & 8).

Channel 4 • The additional reach attributable to Channel 4’s portfolio channels was higher among those aged 16-

34 (19.0% in 2013) than those age 35 or over (15.9% in 2013) (Figures 10 &11). • Between 2008-2013 the unique reach of Channel 4 fell from 15.0% to 2.6%. At the same time the

unique reach of the portfolio channels rose slightly to 1.0%. These figures show a falling proportion of viewers to Channels 4’s services that are only tuning into the main channel (Figure 9).

Channel 5 • In 2013, the additional reach attributable to the portfolio channels stood at 7.2% among 16-34 year

olds and 6.8% among those aged 35 or over (Figures 12 & 13).

45

Summary: Channel shares - overview • During peak time in 2013, the main five PSB channels and their respective portfolio channels

accounted for 78.1% of total television viewing among all individuals – this is driven by the popularity of the main five PSB channels during this daypart (Figure 28 and 29).

46

Summary: Channel shares – number of channels and trends by platform • The variation in viewing by channel group across the different age groups is further highlighted when

looking at the number of channels representing 75% of viewing. In 2013, 27 channels represented 75% of viewing among all individuals – with increased viewing to the portfolio and multichannels, this figure is higher among younger viewers compared with those aged 45 or over. Between 2008 and 2013 the number of channels representing 75% of viewing among all individuals increased from 20 to 27 – a similar, upward trend, can be seen across all age groups (Figure 30).

• The performance of PSB channels varies based on the platform available to individuals in their homes. Among individuals with access to digital terrestrial television only, the combined channel share of the PSB channels is higher than all individuals. Among those with access to digital cable or digital satellite television only, the combined share is lower than all individuals – this is likely to be linked to the number of channels available in households with access to different platforms. The combined share of these channels has followed a downward trend across all platforms.

• Many households will have access to different television platforms across different sets in the home, as well as multiple ways of accessing television services though the same set. In 2013, 52.8% of all television viewing took place through the digital terrestrial ‘signal’, 33.0% through digital satellite and 13.9% through the digital cable ‘signal’ (Figure 31).

47

Summary: Channel shares – trends across channel groups Adults 16-34 and adults 35+ • Among the 16-34 age group BBC portfolio channels, Channel 4 and its portfolio channels and

multichannels are all notably more popular amongst this group compared against all individuals.

• Amongst viewers aged 35 or over, BBC One, BBC Two and ITV are all more popular than among all individuals (Figures 32 & 33).

48

Summary: Channel shares – portfolio channels and multichannel homes Portfolio channels • Among all individuals, the three most popular portfolio channels in 2013 were ITV2 Total (2.8%),

ITV3 Total (2.6%) and E4 Total (1.9%). • Among younger viewers (16-34s), E4 Total was the most watched of the portfolio channel groups

(5.1% in 2013), followed by ITV2 Total (4.3%) and BBC Three (3.3%). • ITV portfolio channels were most popular among viewers aged 35 or over in 2013 (ITV3 Total –

3.3%, ITV2 Total 2.4%), followed by Film4 Total (1.5%) (Figures 34-36). Multichannel homes • Following digital switchover, all UK television homes now have access to multichannel services

through various digital platforms. • Trend analysis of channel performance amongst individuals in multichannel households, as

multichannel penetration continued to grow in the lead up to switchover, shows BBC One & BBC Two and Channel 5 were able to maintain their channel shares.

• While ITV and Channel 4 saw their respective channel shares fall, their portfolio channels achieved the highest combined shares in 2013 (ITV portfolio channels – 7.7%, Channel 4 portfolio channels – 6.1%).

• The share of viewing accounted for by multichannels fell from 36.5% in 2002 to 27.5% in 2013 (Figure 37).

Summary: time-shifted viewing

• Time-shifted viewing is defined in BARB analysis as viewing of programmes recorded and subsequently played back within seven days, as well as viewing after pausing or rewinding live TV. The data presented looks at time-shifted viewing of scheduled programmes through the use of recording devices (such as the DVR) and catch-up services – it does not include viewing which takes place on the ‘+1’ channel variants which may be viewed as a type of time-shifting.

• Based on BARB data, the proportion of individuals owning a DVR increased from 29.2% in 2008 to 71.2% in 2013. While there has been this significant increase in ownership, the overall split in live versus time-shifted viewing has remained stable over the past 6 years, with 83.6% of Total TV viewing in 2013 taking place live (versus 85.1% in 2008), 7.9% time-shifted on the same day as the initial broadcast and 8.5% up to 7 days later. Similarly, across the main five PSB channels, 83.9% of viewing in 2013 took place live, 8.3% time-shifted on the same day and 7.8% up to 7 days later (Figures 43 & 43).

• In 2013, compared against the breakdown in viewing across all television viewing and across the main five PSB channels combined, a marginally higher proportion of viewing to BBC One (85.9%) and ITV (85.0%) took place live during the initial broadcast. On Channel 4 and Channel 5 a marginally lower proportion of viewing (77.9% and 78.1% respectively) took place live in 2013. These trends are similar to those seen in 2008. The proportion of live viewing to Channel 4 fell from 82.8% in 2008 to 77.9% in 2013, a fall of 4.9 percentage points (Figures 44 & 45).

68

Summary: time-shifted viewing • A higher proportion of total TV viewing by younger adults in 2013 was time-shifted (Adults 16-24 –

19.1%, Adults 25-34 – 22.8%, Adults 35-44 – 18.8%) compared against all individuals (16.4% time-shifted in 2013). A similar trend was noted when looking at time-shifted viewing to the main five PSB channels by age group. While the proportion of live viewing across all channels has remained fairly stable amongst all individuals between 2008 (85.1%) and 2013 (83.6%), there have been more marked changes among some audiences. The proportion of live television viewing among 16-24 years olds fell from 84.0% in 2008 to 80.9% in 2013 and fell from 81.4% in 2008 to 77.2% among 25-34 year olds. Similar trends were noted between 2008 and 2013 when looking at viewing to the main five PSB channels – among 25-34 year olds live viewing fell by 6.2 percentage points from 80.4% in 2008 to 74.2% in 2013 (Figures 46-49).

• Viewing to drama programming is the most likely to be time-shifted. In 2008 26.3% of viewing to UK drama programmes across all channels was time-shifted – this increased to 31.1% in 2013. The proportion of viewing to UK soaps taking place after the live broadcast increased from 22.3% in 2008 to 29.4% - over the same period, time-shifted viewing to all other drama programmes also increased from 34.2% to 39.5%. Given the nature and immediacy of the genres, news, sport and current affairs programmes are less likely to be time-shifted (Figures 50 & 51).

• Similar patterns in time-shifted viewing are seen across the various programme genres on the main five PSB channels (Figures 52 & 53).

136

Summary: Range of viewing by genre – output versus viewing, all day • The proportion of time viewers spend watching a particular genre will be related to the amount of time

dedicated to those genres on a channel’s schedule. Often due to the popularity of a particular genre or the scheduling of programming, the proportion of time spent by viewers watching a genre may be higher than the proportion of time the genre is shown.

• In 2013, entertainment programming accounted for 8.5% of BBC One’s output and 13.9% of viewing – similarly, UK drama accounted for 5.6% of output and 11.8% of viewing. National/international news represented 39.2% of output on the channel and 23.5% of viewing (Figure 100).

• Attracting a higher share of viewing compared with output, entertainment, documentaries: other and leisure interests programmes were all particularly popular on BBC Two in 2013 (Figure 100).

• Drama programming accounted for a higher share of viewing on ITV in 2013 compared with output – UK soaps accounted for 3.5% of output and 18.3% of viewing and UK drama represented 3.8% of output and 9.1% of viewing. Among other genres, current affairs: other and national/international news attracted lower shares of viewing compared with output (Figure 100).

• Comedy programmes made up 13.9% of Channel 4’s schedule in 2013 compared with 7.3% of viewing, while documentaries: other represented 11.4% of output and 19.4% of viewing (Figure 100).

• While accounting for 21.7% of Channel 5’s output in 2013 – the largest share of all the main five PSB channels - children’s programming represented 5.5% of viewing by all individuals to the channel (Figure 100).

137

Summary: Range of viewing by genre – output versus viewing, all day* BBC portfolio channels • comedy and documentaries: other represented a lower share of viewing to BBC Three in 2013

compared with output – while entertainment and films: other accounted for higher shares of viewing than output.

• On BBC Four music: contemporary and visual & performing arts programmes represented relatively lower shares of viewing compared with output.

• Given the concentration of programming on one or two key genres on BBC News, BBC Parliament and BBC’s children’s channels, viewing and output shares in 2013 were fairly aligned.

ITV portfolio channels • Similar disparities between output and viewing were seen across ITV+1 as ITV in 2013. On ITV2 and

ITV2+1, UK soaps represented a relatively lower share of viewing compared with viewing, while films: other represented a greater share of viewing.

• UK drama accounted for the majority of output and viewing on the ITV3 channels. The share of viewing to UK drama was higher than output - the opposite was true of comedy, UK soaps and drama: other on these channels.

• Sports programming accounted for 40.8% of viewing on ITV4 in 2013, compared with 23.4% of output – this fell to 16.7% of viewing on ITV4+1 as films: other accounted for a higher share of viewing on ITV4+1 (35.7%) than output (21.3%).

* See TV consumption chapter in main document for corresponding all-day charts

138

Summary: Range of viewing by genre – output versus viewing, all day* Channel 4 portfolio channels • As with Channel 4, comedy programmes represented a lower share of viewing compared with output

and documentaries: other accounted for a higher share of viewing than output on Channel 4+1 - in addition films: other represented 16.0% of viewing compared with 12.2% of output.

• Across the E4 channels the key differential between output and viewing was around drama: other which represented less than half the share of viewing as output in 2013.

• Across the Film4 channels, UK films accounted for lower shares of viewing compared with output.

Channel 5 portfolio channels • The same differential between output and viewing with regards to children’s programming on

Channel 5 was seen across Channel 5+1 in 2013. • On the 5* channels, comedy and documentaries: other accounted for lower shares of viewing

compared with output while the reverse was true of drama: other (on 5*) and films: other. • Drama: other represented around 70% of viewing across the 5USA channels in 2013 compared with

around 60% of output.

139

Summary: Range of viewing by genre – output versus viewing, peak time • Possibly due to more targeted scheduling during the key hours of 6pm-10:30pm, the differentials

between the shares of output and shares of viewing tend to be less marked during peak hours. Some key differences across the main five PSB channels are: – BBC One – current affairs: other (12.4% of output, 9.9% of viewing), UK soaps (6.8% of output,

10.7% of viewing) – BBC Two – leisure interests (23.6% of output, 28.6% of viewing) – ITV – UK soaps (17.5% of output, 29.6% of viewing), national/international news (18.3% of

output, 9.9% of viewing) – Channel 4 – documentaries: other (22.6% of output, 29.0% of viewing), national/international

news (17.6% of output, 8.0% of viewing) – Channel 5 – documentaries: other (37.7% of output, 43.0% of viewing), drama: other (23.4% of

output, 28.6% of viewing), national/international news (17.6% of output, 8.0% of viewing) (Figure 101).

• As with trends across the whole day, while there are differences between the shares of output and

shares of viewing represented by different genres across the portfolio channels, in many cases the more specific genre targeting of the channels (as well as the effect of more targeted scheduling during peak hours) results in fewer, notable differences (Figures 102-105).

* BARB introduced a new panel on 1st January 2010 and a new regional definition of Wales was used instead of ‘any homes that could receive S4C’, this increased the universe population. Other changes saw the inclusion of Channel 4 and all ITV viewing (not just the ITV Wales region) to the share calculation. This meant the Total TV figure increased which has resulted in a step change in S4C’s share figures, as illustrated in the table above.
