The Annual Banking Law Update (ABLU TM ) is presented by the Centre for Banking Law of the University of Johannesburg. This event has formed part of the South African (and international) conference calendar since 1978. The following topics will be dealt with by a healthy mix of senior bankers, practitioners and legal academics (hailing from South Africa, Japan, Germany, Australia, Namibia and England): the Uncitral Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records, cryptocurrency exchange providers and bankruptcy; the taxation of cryptocurrencies; open banking; safe-harbour provisions and insolvent trading by directors; closure of bank accounts; the International Arbitration Act 15 of 2017 (from a banking perspective); the SARB’s financial stability policies; the SARB as central bank in the firing line; deposit insurance; targeted financial sanctions and the FICA; reckless credit and the writing off of debt under the NCA; international crime and traditional trade financing instruments; crowd funding and person-to-person lending. The conference fee amounts to R3400 per person or, in the case of three or more participants from the same institution, R2700 per person. The fee (which is inclusive of VAT) includes a copy of the (peer-reviewed) ABLU book (edited by Prof Charl Hugo and co-published by Juta & Co and the Centre for Banking Law), other conference materials, refreshments and a light lunch.
