FOOD BANK "Give what you can, as often as you can"

~ Julie McGlynn & Carol Bowden ~ Any canned goods, including soups,

stews, tuna, fruits and veggies are being collected. Peanut butter is always appreciated. The need is great, especially for the next couple of months. An astonishing number

of senior citizens from both of our communities need assistance. We are indeed fortunate to be able to share our bounty.

There are many needs besides the staples and the food banks arrange for discounted buys of non-food items like toothpaste, tooth brushes, detergent, soap, toiletries, diapers, etc. Your tax-deductible donations can be turned in to either Carol or me, or can be dropped off at St Mary’s Food Bank in Surprise or the Valley View Food Pantry in Sun City. Thank you for your donations.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

~ Bob Dobbins, Club President ~ As the holidays approach everyone gets very busy and before you know it, it is January. January is a sad time for some of the board members because three board members terms expire on December 31, 2014. Retiring from the board are John McFarland, Ron Eppley and myself. As you know SCW board members are only allowed to serve one (1) two year term and they must get off the board. They may sit out one year and then, if elected, come back for another 2 years. I would like to thank all the board members that I have worked with over the past two years for all their input and support. We were faced with some very controversial issues the past 2 years and I believe every issue was handled in a very professional manner and with the best interest of the entire club in mind. The new 2015 board will be Pat Regan, Les Olerich, Gordon Kinkead, Barb Waddell, Joe Gallo, Jim Willie, and Tim Harmon. As of this writing the new board has not yet met to determine the officers for 2015. As soon as they meet and decide, this information will be posted. I would like to wish the 2015 board good luck and if there is any help I can give, please do not hesitate to ask.

AMERICAN LEAGUE COMMITTEE ~ Bob Dobbins, Committee Chair ~

The fall session is under way with 10 teams in the American League. The American League is playing with 10 players on a team this session, and is playing without a rover. They also allow sliding or diving back into a bag. For the most part, all the games have been very close in score. Scores are a little higher without the rover but everyone seems to like it. Shortly there will be an email coming out to all American League players asking your intent to play in the Spring Session which runs from January 20, 2015 to April 9, 2015. Please respond to this email as quickly as possible so we can plan for the spring session. If you are interested in being a manager for the spring session, please contact Bob Peck at 623-242-7616 or email at [email protected]. If you have any special circumstances(surgery, health issues, travel plans, etc) and you are not sure whether you want to play or go on the placement pool or sub list, please call me so we can discuss the best situation for you. Merry Christmas to all,

CENTRAL LEAGUE ~ George Asan, Central League Committee ~

"Baseball is a kid's game that grownups only tend to screw up", voiced Bob Lemon former manager of the New York Yankees in 1979. Such is not the case for the newly formed Central League of the Sun Cities (SC & SCW) softball clubs. Like all new beginnings, leadership is the key to the ultimate success of any embryonic organization. No two player-managers are more deserving of our thanks for their countless hours and restless nights than Ted DeCampo and Dennis Christenson. Share your gratitude with them as they deserve it. All is going well in the Central League and the competitive spirit and fair play is experienced by all involved. Sure there are needs to address as expected but minimal in nature. Spectator support is high and fun is being had by players, managers and those in attendance. See ya at the ball park!

News from the Events Coordinator ~ Nancy Dobbins, Events Coordinator ~

December 6th - We have a 60's and a 70's team traveling to Sun City Palm Desert to play two of their teams. Each team will play a double header. Pat Regan is managing the 60's team, and Chuck Davelis is managing the 70's team December 12th - Sun Cities Christmas Party. The party is being held at Grandview Terrace. Please see the enclosed flyer. It is a great time for all. The ball room is limited to 200 people. Get your registrations in early. December 29th & 30th - One pitch tournament. The tournament is being run by Art Nelson and Rich McAndrews. This is open to all players. Each player pays $5 to play. This gets you a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of four bats that will be raffled off before the last game of the tournament. This raffle is only for those that play. These four bats are the only bats that can be used during the tournament. You get one pitch (from your own pitcher). You either get a hit or an out. The grill will be fired up for the tournament. Please bring a food item to share with everyone. You can sign up on line or in the club house. It is a fun time. Please join us. Save the date March 29th for our annual fundraiser. The Tin Cup will be held that day. We will be following the same time schedule as last year. I am looking for three people to take the lead with the golf cart raffle, the banquet set up, and the write ups for the newspaper. If you are interested in helping with any of these, please let me know. You can contact me at 623 792-8993.

AS I SEE IT! ~ Dennis Farrar, Editor ~

By now we are almost in the full swing of our softball season. Lots of players have returned, with more to

be due back in January. I see a lot of new faces behind the plate and

in the dugouts. The players in SCW have reached an all time high of 369. I guess more "baby-boomers" are

retiring now. Please remember to play safe so you'll have many more years of softball to play.

Seeing as the Lions Club does not collect aluminum cans anymore, why not let the clubs collect the money? What do you think? We can buy beer, soda, water, and even popcorn with the money. This would be a great way to purchase supplies without it costing the club anything. Just rinse out those discarded aluminum cans and bring them to Liberty Field for recycling. Thank you!

Remember, your "Batter Up" newsletter is printed every month from November to April. Be sure to get your copy in the dugouts or online at: www.azsrsoftball.com. Thanks to all of you who have sent in your articles. I would also again like to thank all those who have continued to contribute our articles to our reading audience.

Finally, my wife Terese and I would like to remind all of you the "reason for the season", hoping that your family has a very Merry Christmas. If you will be traveling during this time please have fun and travel safe. We want to see you back behind the plate after the holidays are past us.

That’s how I see it. Have a good game and get

home safe. ~ Editor

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

"Hot Flashes" ~ Bev Burger, Coach ~

The Sun Cities women, Hot Flashes, played Surprise women's team

called Twisted here at Liberty on Nov. 8th. It was a hard, close game

with lots of hits. The game was early so everyone could go and enjoy the Veteran's Day tourney at the Sun City field.

The Hot Flashes were home team and held the Twisted women in the first, third, fourth and

fifth innings. After three innings of play, the score was 5 to 1 in favor of the Hot Flashes. The defense was great and the women showed great talent and knowledge of where to throw the ball. Everyone backed up the plays. For the Hot Flashes, Judy Grintjes went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple scoring 4 RBI's. Judy White was next going 3 for 4. Sharon Amer went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. Kay Peterson came in and hit a double. Dee Coumont helped coach and keep score. The Twisted women scored 4 in the sixth hitting hard and putting a scare into the Hot Flashes. The final score was 9-5 in favor of the home team, Hot Flashes. Many came out to enjoy the weather and the game. Thanks to the announcer and umpire. Next game will be on Dec. 13th at 1:00 at Liberty field again. Come watch, eat and have fun.

Bob & Ruth Renberg and Gary Green (right) watching some great softball at the 4th Annual Vet's/First Responders Softball Tournament in Sun City on November 8. Like many others, Gary arrived early before his game for some great hotdogs & nachos. Bob is the Chaplin for the Angels in the Outfield. and a recent recipient of the SCSSL Hall of Fame. Thank you Bob & Ruth for all your support. You both are a true blessing to our communities.

Mel Schiebel of Sun City West was presented a very nice watch at the Huntsman World Senior Games in October. Mel received this notoriety for his 20 years of service to softball. Presenting this honor was Mona Givens, and Derek Campbell. Keep playing Mel. From what I see you're not ready to throw in the towel yet.
