Annual Meeting

Thursday, January 24, 2019 • Midland Hills Country Club

2018 State of the Association

Let’s Grow Together! You are one in a million – actually - one in 64.3 million!

According to a recent research study by the Corporation for National and Community Service, nearly one in four Americans, an estimated 64.3 million people, have served as volunteers. It’s safe to say that volunteering is still a primary thread that binds the fabric of our country.

Two thousand eighteen marked the 85th year of Children’s Hospital Association and hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteerism. Over our long history, the role of the volunteer has clearly evolved– from 1933 when CHA members collected coins in tin cans to today, where we host elaborate home tours, family-friendly brewery events, and large community gatherings. However, with more than30,000 registered non-profits in Minnesota alone, the competition for our supporter’s time, talent and treasure has never been greater.

With updated technology, investments in infrastructure, a talented and progressive Board, and evermore committed Guilds, CHA is well-positioned to rise to the challenge. CHA looks forward to placing an even greater focus on strategic philanthropy and the advancement of its mission. Moreover, we enter the coming year knowing that our community needs CHA not only to help sustain the exemplary work at Children’s Minnesota; but also to be a conduit to meaningful philanthropy and volunteerism.

In 2019, expect to see a greater emphasis on our Guilds and exploratory efforts to create new ways for others to be involved in our work. As a result, we hope to see numerous new volunteer opportunities arise within CHA – from event planning to internships and increased community engagement across all sectors. Our strength has always been in our numbers. Together we are CHA, and we are growing stronger to make an even bigger impact in our community in support of children’s health.

With gratitude,

Erin BurschCHA Executive Director

Anticipation! It’s mid-December as I write this letter and I am filled with anticipation! No, not necessarily about the holiday season that is right around the corner. Let me explain by taking you back a couple years and briefly point you to the reasons for my excitement and anticipation.

In a nutshell, since the beginning of 2017, the CHA Board of Directors has gone from being a sizeable all-volunteer Board that focused on working on events through a variety of committees to a smaller Board with an Executive Director that welcomes the participation of community members to assist in our fundraising efforts. We have worked for two years now towards this transition, and I must say it hasn’t always been easy but, not only am I proud of how we worked through our obstacles, I now can feel an excitement in anticipation of what is next for CHA!

Our website, new to us last year, is beginning to bring us more new followers and created another avenue for our supporters to donate online. Our Executive Director, Erin Bursch, has taken us to the next level of development and stewardship. She has developed relationships with hospital partners and shown us new ways to tell our story and share it in new and exciting ways. And I can really feel the excitement from each Board member at committee and Board meetings as we work together in this new way.

Our guilds have also closed out another supremely successful year. In 2018 new events were planned and new fundraising records were recorded. Rummage Sales, Galas, Home Tours, Soup Suppers, Cocktail Parties, Garden Parties, Brewery events to name just a few! Each Guild has its own way of raising funds and they are all fantastic! I can’t wait to see what they do in 2019.

Yes! Anticipation! We have committed to giving over $705,000 in Program support in 2019! I can’t wait to see us get there!

With gratitude and anticipation!

Robin Bristol2018 Children’s Hospital Association President

In addition to these many great events, many Guilds also host private functions and donation drives to raise funds for CHA.

In celebration of CHA’s 75th anniversary in 2008, an annual award was created to recognize an individual, group or business whose strong, consistent support of CHA over the years has significantly contributed to the success of the organization.

Individuals and organizations like these provide CHA with the ability to fulfill its mission of making a difference for the most amazing people on earth...one child at a time.

To date, CHA has contributed more than $23 million making it the largest cumulative donor to Children’s Minnesota!

In 1962 the women of CHA developed the concept of establishing neighborhood groups to supplement CHA income. The first Guild in North Oaks was established in February 1963, and by September of 1964 there were ten viable CHA Guilds.

Presently we have 10 working Guilds located throughout the Twin Cities. Current Guild fundraisers are widely varied in type and are extremely successful. All Guild members work toward the same goals in an effort to raise funds and help provide a positive health care experience for all children.

CHA would not be what it is today without the support and dedication of our Guilds.
