WINTER 2016/17 Foundation Annual message from the 2011: Welsh Hall Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with former Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones and Les Welsh. Construction of the Welsh Hall was a result of a large bequest from Les’ uncle, Robert Leslie Welsh WVML Foundation 2013: Teens enjoying their space in Room 14. Funding support was provided by the Foundation. 1993: Construction of the East Wing supported by the Foundation. 30 Years of Giving! While you may not remember what you were doing all the way back in 1986, the WVML Foundation certainly remembers what it was doing. It was 30 years ago that a group of committed citizens had the foresight to create the Foundation to provide an avenue through which private donors and corporate sponsors could partner in a legacy of giving and support for the Library. And partner and support we have! Together we have created a remarkable place and have been able to provide exceptional services to everyone in our community. Thirty years is a long time – ask anyone who still has adult children at home! It also is a lot of giving. Over the past 30 years, the Foundation has been able to give the Library over $5 million dollars to support enhanced programs, collections and facilities. Imagine, $5 million dollars that came from you – our community of committed sponsors and donors. You have transformed the physical space of the West Van Library. Thirty years ago, there was no East Wing, Room 14, Community Computing Centre, or Welsh Hall. Since the early days of the Foundation, all kinds of campaigns have been carried out. We have sold umbrellas, secured Provincial gaming grants, been the beneficiaries of generous bequests, and held fundraisers, like our croquet tournaments, Passport to Italy/Spain nights, our Author/Dinner evenings. Spaces have been transformed to beautify and accommodate changing needs. Downstairs, The Creighton Waterfall, which not only looks beautiful, but also masks the noise of the computing area, was the result of a generous bequest. Without your support there would be no Health and Wellness section with its robust collection of quality consumer health information. The Courtyard has been transformed to become a space to socialize, use WiFi or work. Back in the olden days of the last century (the 1900s), books were checked in and out manually; thanks to our donors and sponsors the books have RFID and we have an automated check-in/check out system, which never ceases to amaze our curious minds. And that is not all. Our donors and sponsors are the key to many of the outstanding programs that our community has come to expect from our Library. Events like the Friday night concert series, Booktopia, mobile services to the homebound, the TED Talks, the TED Women Talks are all supported by you. Multilingual collections, large print books, multiple copies of best sellers are all made possible by your donations. And there is more to come. In early 2017, the Musto Lounge will open. Further on the horizon are technological changes that will astonish and delight both the current and future generations of library users. It has been an outstanding 30 years. We should congratulate ourselves for all that we’ve done as well as look forward to all that we will be able to accomplish with the continued support for this remarkable cultural institution. Revitalization of the West Wing

If you have been to the library lately you can’t help but notice aconstruction zone on the main floor. While it may be aninconvenience now, the West Wing is getting a much-neededmakeover and the results are going to be worth it. Specialthanks go out to the Municipality, who is funding the renovation, for continuing to take care of our 66-year-old library.

Originally built in 1977, the West Wing is being revitalized andrepurposed to meet the changing needs of the community. Inthe past, there have been times when library patrons havefound it challenging to find a seat on the Library’s popular mainfloor. Also, older adults have expressed interest in having aplace of their own with seating that is comfortable and withbookshelves that are more accessible.

So in 2015, library staff began to refine the concept of a newspace for older adults. They conducted surveys at the libraryand at seniors’ locations in our community. Their input resultedin plans going forward for the West Wing and the new loungenamed in honour of Elizabeth Musto, the library’s first chieflibrarian who served from 1950-1972.

The lounge will have lots of natural light, seating closer tocollections, shelving with varied heights and angled bottom

shelves to improve access to the print collection. Tablettechnology will be available and the ever-helpful WVML librarianswill be close by in the new adjacent Assistive Services Office.

Furnishings for the Musto Lounge are being paid for through theWest Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation and we sincerelyhope everyone comes to see and enjoy the new space. Look forthe special opening celebration of the Elizabeth Musto Loungein early 2017.

Sponsors and Donors CelebratedOn a cold and rainy September evening the WVML Foundation hosted it’s annual Celebration of Sponsors and Donors. Not put off by the weather, our intrepid sponsors and donors made their way to the WVML. Warmed by wine and appetizers, the attendees toured the Library and saw the enhancements that are a direct result of their generous donations. They also were treated to a sneak peak of the Library’s new Musto Lounge.

The Foundation wishes to thank senior library staff including Deb Hutchison Koep, Deputy Director; Pierre Manarovici, Head of Finance & Facilities; Pat Cumming, Head of Customer & Community Experience; and Shannon Ozirny, Head of Youth Services who conducted tours. The donors learned that Raspberry Pi could not be eaten, e-books could be loaded from bus stops, and that in the new West Wing art installations will make them feel that they are outdoors!

ABOUT THE ARCHITECT, PEEROJ THAKRE, PH5 ARCHITECTURE

Ph5 Architecture is a firm thatstrives to design urbanenvironments, buildings andsocial spaces that will enhancepeople’s lives. Principal, PeerojThakre’s philosophy is to usedesign to make a space asfunctional for social interactionand as attractive as it can be.

The area will feature clusters ofchairs available near each of thecollections. Fabric for the chair

coverings was inspired by the work of BC Binning, aleading Canadian artist whose work reflects the colours ofWest Coast scenery.

Peeroj acknowledges that there have been challenges withthe renovation such as the low ceilings, exposed sprinklerlines, and electrical conduits. But she understands ourcommunity has high expectations and she fully expects tomeet them. Her design aims to make the space feel moreexpansive by connecting lounge areas with natural lightand access to views. In an area under the skylight wherethere is no view, one has been created. Expressionisticphotographs of tree trunks will be printed on wood veneerpanels. In explaining this installation, Peeroj said, “It isexpected that light from above will animate the treepatterns throughout the day and the seasons.”

Thank you to allour generous sponsors,

attendees and volunteers who madethis special night possible.

A fundraiser in support of OUR public Library

An Evening with Linden MacIntyreThe nail-biter that was the US election did not prevent more than 130 attendees from attending West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation’s 4th annual Fundraiser at the elegant Capilano Golf and Country Club. This year’s acclaimed speaker was Linden MacIntyre whose career has been defined by excellence. He has won multiple awards for writing, journalism and broadcasting. In 2009, he won the Scotiabank Giller prize for his brilliant second novel of the Cape Breton Trilogy, The Bishop’s Man.

The evening began with a reception which featured sparkling wine and as everyone mingled they were entertained by the talented Elaine Joe on piano. Many took the opportunity to chat with Linden and purchase autographed copies of his books.

It was an unforgettable evening all about the power of story telling. Linden grew up in a small, isolated town in Cape Breton where there were few people his age. Books were his companions and from an early age he wondered if he could ever be a writer. He has often said that it was the story tellers in his community who enjoyed the most status. Late at night when his parents thought he was asleep he would be eavesdropping on the conversations emanating from the kitchen. Who knew the masterful storyteller that he would later become.

Linden’s speech was very personal. It was a heart warming and often humourous speech about the US election, family relationships, cancer, aging and the amazing power of Caversham, the magical family cat. His speech demonstrated the oldest medium of communication, the story. We are all susceptible to the allure of the story he said. We all crave information which speaks to the importance of books and libraries. Books document daily events and in doing so create greater understanding and empathy. These were the comments of a former investigative journalist who believes that the very best fiction is based on real-life events.

Linden confided that his soon to be 100-year-old mother does not like his books which deal with mature themes. Still, like the rest of us, she is eagerly awaiting his new novel, The Only Café, that will be released in the summer of 2017. It will no doubt be as inspiring as the novels which came before.

Everyone who attended our Author and Dinner Fundraiser felt honoured to have had the opportunity to engage with this remarkable Canadian. The money raised will help ensure our library retains its place as an exceptional community resource.
