How will we respond when some students don’t learn?

RTI’s underlying premise is that schools should not wait until students fall far enough behind to qualify for special education to provide them with the help they need.

Instead, schools should provide targeted and systematic interventions to all students as soon as they demonstrate need.

Targeted Instruction + Time = Learning

Because learning styles and instructional needs vary from student to student, we must provide each student with targeted instruction

All students don’t learn at the same speed.

Some students need more time to learn others less

The purpose of RTI—to systematically provide every student with the additional time and support needed to learn at high levels

Tier 1- ensuring that every student has access to rigorous, grade-level curriculum

And highly effective initial teaching

A collective response will be required to ensure that all students learn, so teacher teams work collaboratively

To achieve these collective Tier 1 outcomes, we firmly believe that the only way for an organizations to successfully implement RTI practices is within the professional learning community (PLC) model (Buffum, Mattos,& Weber, 2009)

Intervention is most effective when the interventions are:

timely

structured

Mandatory

Part of a system where these practices apply no matter which teacher a student is assigned

Clarity of purposeCollaborative cultureCollective Inquiry into best practices and current reality

Action orientationCommitment to continuous improvement

Focus on resultsStrong principals who empower teachers

Commitment to face adversity, conflict, and anxiety

The same guiding phrase

A system of hoops to jump through before placing struggling students

into special education.

The sole responsibility of special education or Title I teachers.

1. Who will oversee the process?2. Which interventions will take place in the

regular classroom and which outside it?3. Who will undertake these interventions –

regular classroom teachers, specialists, or special education teachers?

4. At what stage or tier should special education staff begin intervening with students at risk?

Present the current reality to the staff and ask them to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity.

Lead staff through an analysis of best practices in responding to students who aren’t learning.

Assist staff in brainstorming ideas to create an intervention system that is timely, direct, targeted, systematic, and during the school day.

Targeted Instruction + Time = Learning

Variable Variable Constant

1. Is our response based upon intervention rather than remediation?
