FYI—LUM Board Action—December 2015

At the December 2015 meeting of the LUM Board of Director, it was decided that Indiana should “welcome Syrian refugees to Indiana and...grant them the same temporary assistance provided other refugees until they find employment and become acclimated to their new home.” On January 5, 2016, a letter was sent to the Honorable Governor Mike Pence sharing this information.

The LUM Campaign for Hoosier Families encourages you to get involved with this and other issues impacting families and children in the State of Indiana particularly Tippecanoe and surrounding counties. Through the MyFreeTaxes website, you may file your federal and state taxes—it is easy, safe, secure and 100% free. The MyFreeTaxes Partnership campaign is now in its seventh year. Since its inception, the online and in-person tax preparation and filing services have helped millions of families claim billions in tax credits and refunds since 2009.

Offering free English and Spanish tax support, MyFreeTaxes provides qualifying filers access to tax coaches for in-person, self-preparation assistance. The online tool allows taxpayers to self-file for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes free telephone, email and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists.

LUM Immigration Clinic in partnership with Ayuda y Aprende offers Spanish Conversation Tables, a weekly, lunch-time series — free and open to the public. The weekly program will return from winter break on Wednesday, February 10 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

Lifelong learners will gather each week in the conference room at the LUM Office (420 N 4th St., Lafayette) during their lunch hour to learn and improve their conversational Spanish — and connect with their Spanish speaking neighbors. Participants are encouraged to bring along a friend and a brown bag lunch. Esperamos verle allí.

LUM Volunteer Opportunities

Sunday Noon Meal—Volunteer Coordinator The Sunday Noon Meal needs a volunteer each and every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Each Sunday a “noon meal” is offered to the community at the LUM Youth Center, Lafayette. Income Tax Preparers The LUM Volunteer Tax Assistance Program offers flexible hours, the training is provided at no cost, and the time commitment is up to you. In all tax volunteer roles, individuals who are bilingual, multi-lingual, or have international experience are helpful. Emergency Shelter—Overnight Volunteers

Three volunteers and one staff member are scheduled nightly (8 p.m.—7 a.m. or 8 p.m.—midnight; every night) at the LUM Emergency Shelter. Each volunteer will be assigned various duties including but not limited to Check-in Desk, Kitchen (serve food), Hall & Bath (distribute towels, soaps, shampoo, etc.), and assistance at the Winter Warming Station. LUM Camp Counselors Sixty volunteer camp counselors and activity leaders are needed for LUM Camp 2016 — August 1-5 at Hanging Rock Camp. LUM Camp is a week-long, overnight camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old. Must be able to spend the entire week at LUM Camp from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 1 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5. For additional LUM Camp volunteer information, click HERE.

Lafayette Urban Ministry is currently searching for Repair & Maintenance Director.

This is a 12 month position, 15 hours per week, at the rate of $12.00 per hour.

Type: Paid, Par t-time (12 month; 15 hours per week) Hours: Monday—Friday, occasional weekends Pay: $12.00 per hour

Music Ministries Concert to Benefit LUM

First United Methodist Church presents the 4th Annual Music Ministries Concert — in support of LUM — 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 21 at First United Methodist Church (1700 SR 26W, West Lafayette). The Music Ministries Concert is FREE — and features children, youth, adults, choral, instrumental, and hand bells. A free will offering will be collected, and half of the collection will benefit Lafayette Urban Ministry. Don’t miss this special event.

Annual Purdue Row-A-Thon to Benefit LUM

Purdue Rowing Team presents the annual Purdue “Row-A-Thon 2016” in support of the LUM Good Samaritan Fund.

Purdue Row-A-Thon 2016 is schedule for :

Saturday, February 6 | 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tippecanoe Mall, Lafayette (inside near Macy’s)

Each year, the Purdue Rowing Team sponsors “Row-A-Thon” in support of the LUM Good Samaritan Fund. Row-A-Thon takes place all day in the Tippecanoe Mall (Lafayette). The co-ed team members row a marathon of 26 miles in three hours on indoor rowing machines while raising funds for LUM. Stop by the Mall on Saturday, February 6 and check it out.
