Dear ISP Community,In accordance with French law and our own by-laws,

I am pleased to provide you with a summary of the fi nancial statements for the fi scal year from 1 September 2008 to 31 August 2009. These were approved at the General Assembly on 1 December, 2009.

Total revenue (including revolving activities) amounted to 15,315,054 and 15,339,982 including other revenue. Total operating expenses have increased to 15,085,963 , with salaries and charges amounting to 5,976,164 . As expected, social charges and education expenses made up the next-largest segment of the school’s operating costs.

Operating income totaled a profi t of 254,019 .With a net fi nancial loss of 24,204 , and a net excep-tional result of 110,950 , the net income reported is 340 765 .

The net result for the fi scal year ended 31 August, 2009 of 340,765 is allocated as follows: 1,465 to the endowment funds and 339,299 to reserve funds. Total reserves, including endowment funds, are now 3,902,012 .

Despite diffi cult economic times and the current fi nancial crisis, the year 2008-2009 has been marked by a growth in the number of students, in line with the budget. This resulted in a signifi cant gain. The strategic choice to invest in a new building at 98 rue du Ranelagh to continue to respond to an ever-growing demand has allowed the Association to pursue its growth and to continue to create jobs.

The result for the year 2008-2009 is thus 340 765 , an increase of 138% with respect to the previous year. This gain was unexpected as the 2008-2009 operating bud-get foresaw a loss. The 2009-2010 budget shows a slight decrease in the number of students from 695 to 678.

The level of activity projected in the 2009-2010 budget is realistic since there are currently 643 pay-ing students, 35 fewer than budgeted, which is a level comparable to previous years at the same date. What is important to note is that the number of students leaving at the end of the year 2008-2009 (243) has allowed for an infl ux of new students for the year 2009-2010 (214). In addition, the number of Primary School students is greater than that of the Secondary School, which was not forseen when the budget was adopted. Consequently, today we forecast that the amount of revenue will be lower than indicated in the budget.

Dear ISP Community,

After six years as the Primary School Principal, the 2008-2009 academic year was a very special one for me as the newly-appointed Head of School. It was a year in which the school saw many changes in leadership and achieved a great deal. I am immensely proud to be leading such a hard-working team, which allowed the school to progress so rapidly.

For the second year the Primary School campus enjoyed more user-friendly facilities with larger classrooms, an enlarged play area and more interactive Smartboards. The Secondary School campus expanded virtually with wonderful additions in technology, which all have a direct and immediate impact on student learning. Specifi cally, we acquired exciting new software programs in the music, science, art and design technology departments. Below is a list of ongoing achievements, which continue our strateigic plan initiatives. We are very proud of our accomplishments, and I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard in these areas: our staff, Board of Trustees, PTA and our parents and students, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Sincerely,

Audrey Peverelli, Head of School

DONATIONS TO ISP THE PTA AT ISPDONATIONS TO ISP THE PTA AT ISP

ISP’s 2009 Parent Teacher Association events were highlighted by two parties that provided book-ends to the year: the PTA’s 40th annual “International Night” in November and the June “School’s-Out-Summer’s-Coming Party”. Both were well-attended by large crowds of parents and staff. Along with the 8th annual “Welcome Workshop” and numerous “Coffee Morning” get-togethers throughout the year, the PTA organized a variety of social events for the ISP community.

Dozens of volunteers helped support various activities including the “Holiday Bazaar”, “Staff Appreciation Breakfast”, library and theatre assistance, in addition to the help grade repre-sentatives give teachers every week. Volunteers also coordinated a variety of activities for par-ents, including conversation groups (English, French, German and Italian), cooking lessons, tours of Paris, Nordic walking, and yoga classes.

In addition, the PTA donated over 6,000 Euros toward student activities, including support of ISP drama productions and facilities, the “Model United Nations” program, graduation cakes, and “Sports Day” refreshments, just to name a few.

ANNUAL REPORT 2008–09

Richard Harrold is our new Primary School Principal. He is a British national, but left the UK for the life of an international teacher - and then administrator, back in 1994. He came to ISP from Monterrey, Mexico where he headed the upper ele-mentary section of a large American School. Prior to Monterrey, Richard worked in Holland, Venezuela, Thailand, China, England, Hong Kong and Japan. As he says: “I think I was intended for the international life; my mother is Chinese, my father was English. I have a Venezuelan wife, Luchy, two Dutch daughters (Sol, aged 6 and Risa, aged 4) and a Mexican son (aged 2)”

Richard’s areas of education interest include linguistics, assessment and future schooling. He is studying for a PhD that focuses on technology in education. Away from school, Richard loves cricket and rugby, Indian food and cooking. One of his school teachers once wrote in a school report “if he knew as much physics as he knows about the Beatles, he would win a Nobel Prize”. Richard learned Chinese during his six years in China and that experience awakened a love of languages. He is now trying to resurrect his school French!

Barry Mansfi eld, joined ISP as the new Secondary School Principal after work-ing for six years in the same position at the International School of Berne in Switzerland. He began his career as a history teacher and, after working as a Head of Department, Head of Grade, and IB Diploma Coordinator, he was offered the opportunity to lead the sec-ondary school in Berne.

Barry has been working in IB schools since 1992; he fi rmly believes that these programs, PYP, MYP and Diploma, offer students the most complete education. Leading the Secondary School at ISP is the perfect professional opportunity: to work with great academic programs; to be supported by a highly-skilled staff and active, engaged parents; to provide for a wonderful student body; and to be located in such an exciting city,

A British national, Barry left the UK in 1988, teaching fi rst in Athens (where he met his wife, Jackie) and going on to Kenya (where he and Jackie were mar-ried), Dubai (where their son, Dylan, was born in 1994), the south of France,

Jeddah, and then Berne. It is perhaps an understatement to say that the family loves to travel. They have spent time in various parts of Asia (Borneo, Thailand, and Nepal) as well as in Europe, Africa and the U.S.A. Says Barry,“We have not yet made it to South America, but that will have to wait for now!”

The whole family enjoys reading, music, and going to the cinema. Many years ago both Barry and Jackie played in bands, trying to get that elusive record deal – Jackie actually turned down a contract to pursue her teaching qualifi cation! Barry enjoys following his favorite football team (Arsenal) though no-one else in the family quite has his passion for the game.

Barry’s decision to move to Paris was made as a parent as well as an educa-tor. He says: “When I fi rst came here, I was very impressed with the quality of the staff and the programs at ISP, and as parents it was very important to us that we enrolled our son in an IB school.” So, Dylan has joined the Grade 10 at ISP.

MEET OUR NEW PRINCIPALS

“We’re all extremely excited about living in Paris - a city we love. Most of all, I’m looking forward to working with the students at ISP since I love teaching and enjoy listening to... elementary students.”

“As a family we are looking forward to exploring Paris. We would like to thank everyone who has been so welcoming; we hope to make many new friends and have a great time in France, both personally and professionally.”

RICHARD HARROLD

One of the great accomplish-ments of the last school year was the creation and launch of our new ISP website. Our pre-vious site was designed early in the digital age, when it was relatively rare for schools to have websites.

With the new site, the content can be easily changed by the External Affairs Offi ce and the focus has switched from show-casing our technological skills to using the web as a powerful tool for communications.

The new features of ISP’s website include an interactive calendar, a news section with RSS feed, a Faculty and Staff directory with a search func-tion, and much more.

The project is far from being fi nished. We frequently update the contents and upload new elements. Many new areas and features are being created at this very moment, the Alumni Portal and the ISP service pages among them.

The website is a constantly evolving publication and it will benefi t from any feedback we get from its users, so please don’t hesitate to contact us at: [email protected].
