EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The year 2010-2011 has had its best moments as well as sad. Barefoot College lost a friend in Sri Sankaran, a guide a mentor and the world a crusader for Dalit Rights especially the socially oppressed. He was a member of Barefoot Colleges’ (SWRC) Governing Body and has been encouraging all who work in the oganisation to be committed to work for the Dalits and socially underprivileged. We give a sad but resolute salute to him. All of us in Barefoot College shall internalise the values for which he stood for all his life and make all efforts to work towards it. Year 2010-2011 witnessed the taking up of a new initiative of physically challenged rural women making sanitary napkins. His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Barefoot College on 13th February 2011 and went around the new campus of Barefoot College. He addressed the rural audience gathered at the open air stage. (which has been newly designed) A new batch of women from Africa, Asia and Latin America underwent training as women barefoot solar engineers in Tilonia and so were women from Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Barefoot College has in collaboration with Santokba Durlabji Medical Trust organised Camps in villages for the physically challenged during the year. Barefoot Colleges’ work in Solar Energy was recognised by the Zayed Future Energy Prize 2011 by being selected as one of the six finalists from 69 countries and 391 submissions. Barefoot Colleges’ entry was the only one from India.

“This year the drinking water scarcity will be comparatively less scarce than earher years because of the good rains we have had in 2010..”

“An aged village person” 1. DRINKING WATER

Year 2010-2011 had recorded good rains uptil 40 cms in Silora Panchayat Samiti Ajmer District. Barefoot College was able to construct and complete 19 rain water harvesting (RWH) tanks in Night School buildings, pre-school education centres and training cum community centres. The tanks have a total capacity of collecting 3,37,000 litres of rain water from roof tops annually. The tanks have been constructed in Ajmer, Jaipur, Barmer districts, Rajasthan and Champawat district, Uttranchal. More than 4100 persons in 19 villages are able to access drinking water from the tanks. The tanks have generated employment opportunities and provided gainful wages to 371 persons. This year five RWH tanks have undergone repairs and they are situated in night school buildings and training – cum – community centres in villages Kotri, Dayalji – ki – dhani, Hachukda, Jhakolai and Motipura. One open shallow dug well has been deepened for recharging the ground water levels in and around the catchment area of the dug well. More than 1500 persons are able to access drinking water from the tanks in 5 villages. During 2010-2011 village surveys for RWH tanks have been conducted in field centres / sub-centres of Barefoot College in Rajasthan. Meetings, workshops and training camps have been organised during the year at the village, decentralised field – centres and Tilonia level. These have been on Drinking Water, Transparency and Social Audit. Together there has been 160 meetings and 55 worshops as well as trainings camps during this year. More than 5,000 men and women have participated in these events throughout the year.

NEER JAL A web – based water portal Neer Jal has been collecting data on existing water resources in Silora and Dudu blocks of Ajmer and Jaipur districts of Rajasthan. The details are given below :-

WATER TESTING

A team of barefoot chemists regularly collect water samples from existing water resource for testing and during the year had continued to collect them.

“How do you tackle malnutrition that is so rampant in villages. ”

A nutritionist visiting Tilonia PRE – SCHOOL EDUCATION

Barefoot College has since 1975 been co-ordinating rural crèches or balwadis which are pre-school education centres for very young children of the age – group 1-5 years. The pre-school education centres prepare the young child for learning readiness while supplementary nutrition in the form of a balanced meal and milk is also provided. Parents of the children contribute towards this provision. Children attending the balwadis also undergo health check-ups and as part of it arm bands are strapped on boys and girls. The colour red in the arm band indicates severe malnourishment and yellow indicates just above malnourishment while green suggests normal physical growth of the child. Barefoot College presently co-ordinates 71 pre-school education centres in Jaipur, Ajmer and Barmer districts of Rajasthan. More details are given below of the check – ups mentioned:

IMPACT

563 including 243 boys and 320 girls have after attending pre-school education centre during 2010-2011 entered formal educational mainstream in government primary school at class 6. 70 children including 26 boys and 44 girls have been attending Barefoot Colleges’ night schools.

For Disaggregated detaits about levels of malnourishment on children attending the crèches are below:

CASE STUDIES 1. Let there be Light and Wellness

Chandni is a MP of the Childrens’ Parliament (CP) and belongs to village Banjaron-ki-dhani. She is 13 years old. Her village does not have access to power. Chandni took up her villages’ issues at every CP monthly meeting. Chandni is from the Banjara community. Her mother does not keep good health. Chandni has 7 sisters and 2 brothers. All of them and her parents live in a small temporary hutment. Chandni is active in arguing her villages’ status at every meeting with Barefoot College. Chandnis’ being elected as MP of the CP has instilled in her a sense of responsibility. As a result of being an MP she has been able to allocate a venue for the campus in the village wherein children of her community in the age group of 1-5 years attend Barefoot Colleges’ creche, (pre-school education centre) construction of a rain water harvesting tank in the night school in her village and a sewing class for older girls attending the night school in her village.

2. The Teacher has Arrived

Lalaram is a resident of village Paner and a night school teacher for the past 10 years. In the night school where he is involved as a teacher there are more then 18 children attending the night school belonging to the Kalbelias, a nomadic community. This by itself is a Great achievement considering the fact that he has been able to prevail upon their parents. This is an indicator of a change in their attitudes. Lalaram has made concerted efforts to prevail upon the nomadic community to send their children regularly to night school in his village. Children of this community are traditionally brought up on folk music and dance. Barefoot Colleges’ Community Radio has been able to provide an impetus to nurture their inherent talent in folk music. Lalaram is also active in another village and has established a night school in Satiyon-ki-dhani where children of sex-workers attend which is another of his initiative. Children who have had to face the stigma in other villages are now attending the night school and many of them have joined formal mainstream education after attending the night school. No teacher was prepared to go to this small hamlet for teaching its children. Through Lalaram now the teacher has arrived.

“Why scrap iron for fabricating hardware and what for ?”

Question – Anon

MECHANICAL FABRICATION WORKSHOP Barefoot College had established its Mechanical Fabrication Workshop in 1990. The main objective was to use scrap iron for fabricating all hardware in the organisations’ building needs as well as the rural communities and thereby replace wood for construction purposes. The other important objective is to promote traditional knowledge of black smithy into metalcraft. The Mechanical Fabrication Workshop therefore fabricates iron girders, gates, trolleys, windows, doors and other hardware items meeting Barefoot Colleges’ as well as villagers needs. During 2010 –2011 the Workshop had therefore fabricated 15 doors, 4 tables, 42 stools, 3675 solar panel stands, 41 pot stands and 4 solar water heaters. The Workshop had during 2010-2011 trained 6 barefoot engineers who could fabricate solar water heaters. The annual income generated by Machanical Workshop during 2010-2011 has been Rs 12,72,800.
