LETTER FROM JUDY KRAWCZYK, PRESIDENT

Dear Friends of the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc.,This is my report on major undertakings at the NEW Zoo. The Zoo, with the help of the N.E.W. Zoological Society, has completed the tortoise exhibit. Thanks to a generous donor, Al and Tootie are now in their new home. The home authenti-cally replicates an Aldabra’s domed shell from exterior to interior vantage points. The exhibit will serve as a year-round home for the happy couple. Behind-the-scene tours of the exhibit will be available at a reasonable fee. The life span of these giants is more than 125 years making it a perfect opportunity for you to have a photo with your children and the tor-toises, and at some time in the future your children and grandchildren can have their family photos taken with the same tor-toises! This is like history in the making.

This summer we broke ground for the construction of our new Education & Con-servation Center. Educators in the area have become aware of the opportunity the zoo provides to students of all ages. The Education & Conservation Center will SURYLGHFODVVURRPVHWWLQJVIRUÀHOGWULSVin a hands-on learning environment. This will be enjoyable and, perhaps, serve as a stimulus for students to volunteer at the zoo. It may even give some students the opportunity to consider a future path of study or career. The Center will be built in SKDVHV7KHÀUVWSKDVHZLOOLQFOXGHDQHZZHOOH[WHULRUZDOOVEDWKURRPVRIÀFHVand a utility room. There will continue to be an opportunity for naming rights to individual state-of-the-art classrooms as well as other parts of the building. Your gift will ensure that the NEW Zoo contin-ues its mission of education, conservation, and recreation for future generations.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society is the fund-raising arm for the zoo. Donations of any size can go directly to education.

Each August the Society partners with the Wisconsin Restaurant Association to present the “Feast with the Beasts.” This is an important annual fund-raising event that is in its 12th year. It is an HYHQLQJÀOOHGZLWKPXVLFVSHFLDOW\IRRGVand beverages. This is a very popular event that is near capacity and tickets VHOORXWTXLFNO\$OOWKHSURÀWVJRWRthe education programs at the zoo.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc., is organized as a 501(c)3 of the Internal Rev-enue Code. All donations are deductible to the full extent of the law for income tax purposes. Each year an independent audit is conducted. Opportunities for giving include the Endowment Fund, Memorial Brick Program, Memorial benches, Wall of Honor, and other programs. The zoo could not operate without our many volunteers. They help with animal FDUHPDLQWHQDQFHDQGEHDXWLÀFDWLRQof the zoo. The Society recognizes and rewards these hard workers at an annual appreciation dinner. The Society spon-sors equipment for the zoo hospital and is a co-sponsor of conservation grants that support wildlife conservation and educational research efforts worldwide.

Judy Krawczyk President N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc.

It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we are well into 2011. <RXU1(:=RRÀQLVKHGWKH\HDUZLWKan attendance number of 254,344 and we had a great year despite the state of the economy. The Zoo also remained self-funded and ended the year with revenue exceeding expenses. That is a tremendous accomplishment being that the zoo is 1 of only 7 of the 221 AZA accredited zoos & aquariums in North America that are self-funded (receiving no tax support) and the only one that does not have operational support from an endow-ment fund. We truly are working with and towards a sustainable zoo business model. Being sustainable means we are truly living within our means and is a UHÁHFWLRQRIWKHVXSSRUWIURPWKHFRP-munity. The zoo can and will be as good as the community wants to support it.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society is our support organization, raising funds for new capital improvements as well as helping out with operational support in some areas. Without a support orga-nization, we would lack the connection WRWKHÀVFDOVXSSRUWDQGIXQGUDLVLQJopportunities within the community where we reside. The Zoo Society has been busy raising funds for a new Educa-tion Building (current one was built in 1953). They are in need of your help to complete this project in 2011. The Zoo is a valuable community resource: there are visits by over 20,000 school children every year, and the zoo plays a vital role in wildlife conservation and education.

The NEW Zoo supports the community in many ways. The zoo has a deep com-mitment to science, education, and wildlife conservation, but it also gener-DWHVYDOXDEOHHFRQRPLFEHQHÀWVWRWKHregion. It is a great investment for anyone interested in making a difference in the community. AZA accredited zoos in the State of Wisconsin generated the follow-ing impacts for the state of Wisconsin:

$72.7 million in economic activity (contributions to national GDP)

$26.9 million in personal earnings (salary and wages)

856 jobs

7KHVHEHQHÀWVULSSOHRXWIURPWKHinitial outlays as they are re-spent across the breadth of the economy.

In closing I would like to thank you for your support and investment in your NEW Zoo. Remember, you have a self-funded zoo unlike any other and it is only through your support that we can FRQWLQXHWRUHÁHFW\RXUFRPPXQLW\SULGHPlease, if you haven’t personally or if you know someone who would like to make an investment, contact our Zoo Society. We have a lot of plans but we need continued involvement from year to year for funding new exhibits as well as opera-tions. Involvement will help us move from a “good zoo” to a “Great Zoo!”

LETTER FROM THE ZOO DIRECTOR PROGRAMS OF THE N.E.W. ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY, INC.

“The zoo can and will be as good as the community wants to support it.”

PAVE THE WAY BRICK PROGRAMThe Pave the Way Brick Program was introduced at the zoo over 20 years ago. Today the engraved bricks line the pathways to many of the animal exhibits. We are now in the process of placing all new bricks in stainless steel frames at the entrance to the exhibits. The N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. relies on engraved brick sales to help offset the costs of operating expenses.

Personalized memorial bricks make great gifts for a birthday, wedding, anniversary, employee or boss appreciation, pet appreciation, remembering a loved one, or for the person who has everything. Purchasing a personalized brick will help build the NEW Zoo and serve as a memorial for all to enjoy.

MEMORIAL BENCHES PROGRAMNATURAL RIVER ROCK BENCHThe hand crafted natural river rock bench is designed of two natural river rocks and a hand polished granite seat 39” x 16” x18”. The raised arm of the bench is the perfect place to have a loved one’s name engraved. The cost of the bench is $1800.00 which includes up to 20 engraved letters.

100% RECYCLED PLASTIC CEDAR-STYLE BENCHThe hand crafted plastic cedar-style bench is approximately 5 feet long by 3 feet high with an engraved backrest. The cost of the bench is $1000.00 and includes 2 lines of engraving with up to 20 letters per line.* Both benches can be placed at the zoo in an area of your choice for all to enjoy. Subject to Zoo Director’s approval.

ENDOWMENT FUND PROGRAMThe Society established the Endowment Fund so that the growth and quality of the NEW Zoo will continue to expand well into the future. Funds are used to insure the Zoo’s continued success and sustainability by upgrading and expanding exhibits and facilities.

Your gift to the Endowment Fund is deposited and invested through the efforts of local investment institutions. The earnings from these investments are used to update existing exhibits and facilities at the NEW Zoo.

WALL OF HONOR PROGRAMThe Wall of Honor was introduced by the Society to honor community-minded generous individuals, businesses, and IRXQGDWLRQVWKDWKDYHJLYHQVXSSRUWHLWKHUÀQDQFLDOO\RUwith in-kind gifts and or services. The Wall of Honor is located outside the Visitor Center as you enter the zoo proper.

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH THE NEW ZOO IS BUILT!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2010GLORIA JAHNKE

I have been volunteering at the NEW Zoo for approximately 20 years. Mary Matzke was the one who organized and trained the first group of volunteers and I was in that group. Through the years I have done a variety Zoo jobs. A few of my favorites were taking the Discovery Carts out into the Zoo those first 4-5 years, my husband and I dressing up at Halloween and helping with the early Zoo Boo’s and now helping Carmen keeping the animal records up to date. From the very first day I set foot in the Zoo I have felt welcome and useful. The NEW Zoo staff that I work with is outstanding! I absolutely enjoy the time I spend volunteering – Carmen is so good about answering my many questions, Kara is very patient and helpful when I have a problem with the computer and Neil and everyone else makes me feel welcome. Being a volunteer for 20 years and proving that you are reliable can give you some behind the scene perks such as having the privilege of holding the lion cubs – that experience was AWESOME! I feel very fortunate to be involved in such a top-notch organization.

Original Aurelia Barth Center built in 1950.

New Education & Conservation Center.

For the past couple of years we have been talking about a desperately needed new Education & Conservation Center at the zoo. Thanks to all of the generous donations from community-minded foundations, businesses, and individuals, the time has come to begin our new venture! Construction on the new Education & Conservation Center began in June of this year. The building will go up in three phases as the funds come in. We have raised over $600,000.00 toward our goal of $1,100,000.00. That being said, we still have a long way to go and we are counting on the generosity of the community to help us get there!

WE STILL NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO CONTINUE OUR MISSION

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The new Education & Conservation Center will promote and show-case the zoo’s Sustainability Program. It will comply with Brown County’s policies to use “green” building design and construction for new buildings. “Made in the USA” is what our architect and contractors are striving for. We will use American made products whenever possible.

Naming rights are still available for the outside of the building and some of the rooms. Please contact the society at 920-434-6814 for more information.

Come out and watch the building unfold!
