Letter from Our Executive Director

For me, serving as the new executive director of Parenting Now! is a source of inspiration and pride. When I was a young parent, I had a great experience participating in the Birth To Three programs. I never imagined, though, that I would one day lead the organization and continue the legacy of Minalee Saks, co-founder and first executive director of Parenting Now! What I have found in my first six months at Parenting Now! is a vital nonprofit with deep ties to the community. We are served well by a dedicated, hard-working board and a gifted, capable staff. I also see the continuing need to support and nurture the families in our community. Parenting Now! is at the forefront in meeting the parenting needs of all families with our nationally respected Make Parenting A Pleasure® and First 3 Years programs. We partner with Baby Connection to offer a drop-in program for new parents with infants and we screen first-time parents in our local hospitals through Healthy Families Lane County. This is a busy place!

Breaking the Cycle of Abuse

“Laura” was raised by her mother because her father was a registered sexual predator.

When she was 16, Laura became pregnant by an abusive boyfriend; her son was born when she was 17. She joined a Program for Young Parents group at Parenting Now! At first she continued to have abusive relationships.

At Parenting Now!, she learned to access community resources to benefit herself and her child, and she learned to build a support network with other healthy parents who shared the same commitment to their children. “I learned communication skills to express my needs and wants in parenting and relationships, and I learned about healthy families.”

Because of what she learned through her Parenting Now! group, Laura created a loving relationship with a new partner, and they married. Laura’s husband provides a strong male role model for her son.

“The support, learning and growth in my Parenting Now! group made it all possible,” Laura says.

Growing Organization

Change is part of an organization’s life, just as it is in parenting. In the 2012-13 fiscal year, Parenting Now! experienced several changes:

Our name became Parenting Now!, a change from Birth To Three. Our name change adds flexibility to our group offerings and emphasizes our belief in the importance of parenting education, which research has shown prevents child abuse and neglect.

Our executive director retired and we welcomed Lynne Swartz to the position. An alumnae of our programs, Lynne brings us expertise in curriculum development, grant writing, public awareness and fiscal oversight.

We created Founder’s Circle and Circle of Friends donor recognition programs. Founder’s Circle, named after founding director Minalee Saks, celebrates our donors who have a leadership commitment ($1,000+) to the well-being of parents and children. The new Circle of Friends recognizes donors of $250-$999. These

investments are integral to the vision of a community where all children are raised by nurturing, skilled parents.

We offered new parenting groups this year, “field-testing” a group for parents of 3-year-olds and one for parents of 4-year-olds. We received reports of great satisfaction from the parent participants.

We greatly appreciate the important contribution our volunteers make of their time, expertise and resources. This past year they donated 2,751 hours, which has an estimated fair market value of over $55,000.

Our Programs for Parents and Children

During this fiscal year, Parenting Now! served more than 9,600 parents and children in the following programs:

First 3 Years groups for families with children ages birth to 3.

Program for Young Parents groups for young people age 12 to 21 who are pregnant or have young children.

Crecer groups for Spanish-speaking parents of children ages birth to 8.

Make Parenting A Pleasure® groups for highly stressed parents of children ages birth to 8.

Parent HelpLine, a free telephone information and support program for all parents.

Healthy Families Lane County, a free program that provides home visits, screenings, referrals, and follow-up calls.
